I was told by a guy who played in one Major League Spring Training game how it went for him. He was told that morning he was going to play an inning in the game. So he went to the MLB dressing room and the equipment manager (who couldn't have picked him out of a police lineup) told him to pick out any jersey that fit. It didn't matter what the number was. He also had to find pants that fit good enough. After the game he was told to dump the uniform into the bin so it could be washed. That was his MLB uniform experience.

I ended up as 18 and 24 in high school. When we were picking uniforms, I had a meeting that day after school for something else, so I was the last person to arrive to pick out my jersey. There were only two options left, the aforementioned 18 and 24. The only problem was that 18 was a home jersey and 24 was a road jersey. There was no away 18 or home 24, so I ended up wearing 24 on the road and 18 at home.

I had a similar problem. Our away jerseys were the old jerseys and number 2 was a 2XL which was not gonna fit. So I can’t remember exactly now, but I was always 2 at home and then it was either 5 for 2 years and 20 for 1 on the road or 5 for 1 year and 20 for 2 years.

I think the jersey numbers were always a "seniority" thing. Definitely had that experience in both high school and college level when I joined the teams as a freshmen. And the cycle goes on when you become more senior throughout the years. I'm guessing a similar thing happens in baseball, especially if you're not an everyday ML player.

My 3rd year of Little League, I finally made it to the Top division which had the newer Uniforms compared to the older hand me downs in the lower divisions. The manager who had coached the previous season never turned in my new teams uniforms. So basically we had nothing to play in. The parents took up a donation to get us some Green T shirts with our Team name done in small white block font iron on letters in the front and a small Iron on number on the back and then we used our own jeans as our pants. We looked like a bunch of turds in a punch bowl and kids made fun of us, which kids did back in the 70's. The next season we were the only team with brand new uniforms with the fancy embroidered script and we looked like a million bucks and played a lot better as well.

My wife's cousin played in the minor leagues for three years in the late 60's. He has a picture of himself on his first day at the team with a pair of baggy pants that he said was more like sweat pants. In the picture you can see the pants had a hole on the side next to where the back pocket would be, probably from the last guy who wore them sliding into base. He complained that his pants had a hole, the equipment guy told him that was the only pants they had that fit him, but they were going to get more in a few weeks and he could swap them out. Three years later, the day before he was being released from the team, the club guy threw him a new pair of pants. He said he told the clubby they weren't getting them back when he left.

During the regular MLB season how many sets did you get of each uniform? For example did you get two different sets each of home and road and alternate uniforms.... like one as a back up for the other? How did that work in the minors.... did you have two different home jerseys and two different road jerseys etc.?

The Padres scouted you in college and knew your wore #9. That is why they gave it to you. On the high numbers, there were a ton of 60s, 70s and 80s in the big leagues this year with teams shuttling up and down from Triple A short term middle relief pitchers and "one start and then send them back down the next day" starting pitchers this year. The Orioles used 42 different pitchers!
