I remember discovering this on accident, it's a ridiculously awesome feature. I've been using it to map out room layouts by turning 2d room floorplans into grease pencil then into paths and finally back into a mesh I've limited dissolved, it's not a perfect workflow but really nice for when you're feeling lazy.

Hi, I am not exactly sure what you are trying to do. Are you trying to import an image sequence? or just a couple of images? Could importing a video help? Let me know.

Ohh great, thanks for replying (My second account) Actually what I want is to add different images for different scene background, but when I do add them they all start with first frame and overlap each other, what I want is to have them at different time frames like from 1st the 100th frame and so on.. Again thanks for responding, really grateful.

when you apply the "Trace image to Grease Pencil" option, you need to play with the setting to see what works. Maybe the Threshold setting. Good luck

@@Learn2Animate Thanks, I have the same issue, even with playing and testing the threshold and all features. I tested with your lion image that I convert in png with a transparent background, but it kind of inverse the image. I tested with a new image drawing simples lines with transparent canva saved in png, and it doesn't work. I tested on blender 3.4 and 3.5 if you have any ideas it's welcome, thx for your work :)

How dp you turn the tracing into a mesh and then into a 3d object?

I am not really sure, I believe you need to convert your grease pencil object into a curve then convert into a mesh so that you can extrude it. Let me know if this works. 😎 👍

You can convert a Grease Pencil object to a 3D Mesh. You have to convert to a path first and then you can convert in to a Mesh. Hope this helps.

Can u plz make a video on how to render in high quality. I don't know why but even if i follow all the steps from other rendering video the rendered image is not high quality. Lines don't look smooth after zooming.

How did you manage to make the dialog window in blender show changes in real time, I have to select "OK" for it to apply?

I figured it out finally! Set the "trace frame" to the current frame you're on. Select "OK". The dialogue box will now be the same as this video and change in real time.

@@HOMANU.EL.HUMANO the “trace frame” is an option in “trace image to grease pencil”. Set the trace frame to the frame you are on currently which is on the dope sheet or timeline highlighted in green in my case.

I'm very new in Blender and as soon as I click outside the popup window with the grease pencil options it disappears, in the timeline I don't see the windows like in the video... in fact he goes to Object and there the grease pencil option appears, in my case I have to go to Object, then convert and then to convert the image to grease pencil.

I imported an image, but how do I select it? Also, does this work for Bitmaps, Jpegs, or PNGs?

You select it either in the viewport with the selection tool the arrow on top of your tool box. But you have to be in Object mode. and yes, Bitmap, JPG, and PNG's work but hopefully they are black and white images (Grayscale) 😎

That is how the image is. If you need to adjust your image you need to do that in Photoshop or Gimp whichever image editing software you might have. Gimp is free. 😎 👍

But how can I do to draw the brushes over the drawing? Whenever I add an image, the brushes disappear.

I believe you just need to re-select the Grease Pencil object and you will get the brushes again. 👍 😎

Does not work for me. I have a dark blue and white creature and it makes it nearly all black, also the alpha background.

You have to be in Object mode and have the image selected, Go to Object > Trace image to Grease Pencil. Hope this helps.😎

go in object mode click on image , click object u will see convert, move mouse on that and u will see trace image to grease pencil

try moving the settings 1:30 Color Threshold. if it doesn't work, it may be that there is not a lot of contrast in the image. Hope this helps

You have to add an image reference and have it selected and you should see the Convert Image to Grease Pencil option available in your Object menu. Let me know if this helps. 😎👍

I just tried to 'Trace Image to Grease Pencil' and it won''t let me do it: the command is in 'Convert' and then the command is 'grey' and not applicable!! Help!!

Make sure the image is a JPG. Maybe the file type is incorrect.

When you trace the image you can move the tracing over to the side and delete the original. You can also select it in the outliner and delete it from there. 😎 👍

I don't think its an add-on. Go to the Object menu > Convert > Trace Image to Grease Pencil But you have to have an image selected. Hope this helps. 👍😎
