How Valid Is the Science of Epcot's Living with the Land?

One of my favorite attractions at Disney is Living with the Land. The idea of sending a boat through greenhouses and trying to teach guests about the future of sustainable farming, seems like quite the boring concept on paper. It’s really to the merit of the Imagineers who worked on designing Epcot, that this attraction and many early others that defined the park, became interesting and creative endeavors. However, it begs the question: If this is the future of agriculture and this attraction has been showcasing the same ideas since 1982, is this actually a realistic representation?

Living With The Land is one of my favorite Disney attractions too! And as you've stated near the end of the video, not just because it's relaxing, but also because of how it's one of Epcot's original attractions that's still up, and running to this very day, and not heavily butchered with something much more generic, gimmicky, and only there just to sell merchandise for the sake of it. Despite a handful of issues, it represents agriculture very well, and does an excellent job of teaching its guests about agriculture around the world, and how they can also make a difference on Earth! I'll be so disappointed if it ever gets replaced with something bland that has nothing to do with what once made Epcot so fun, original, and special, like several of the other past rides from the park.

I really hope any updates to this ride are simply to make it run more smoothly and that visually and tonally, it never changes. To me it is the last and best of what Epcot was always envisioned as being about. Updates to Epcot are fine with me but this is as classic as It’s A Small World in terms of vision and not everything needs to be updated if by that, you mean modernized and branded.

Living with the land is definitely a technology showcase and not necessarily a tour of practical solutions. That being said, there have been many practical/ish systems developed that could be showcased. But, then they run into proprietary systems and/or business partnerships and those can always be sketchy. I remember the NASA centrifuge grower and I'd love to see something like the FarmBot integrated. But, that is more of a personal solution rather than a large scale system that The Land seems to focus on.

I have to imagine that Diz execs collectively forgot this exists. It amazes me every few years when I make the trip and see my favorite ride has remained unspoiled. You would think the higher ups would take a lesson from the longevity of this attraction: an appeal to education and humanity is far more timeless than the latest trending IP. Thanks for this video! I love Living with the Land! Last trip to Disney, I took the Behind the Seeds Tour. It was amazing and I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in the ride (once tours hopefully resume operation). I think hydroponic gardening could definitely be used effectively in the future to supplement heavily or even replace traditional farming practices. I have both a raised bed traditional garden and a hydroponic garden modeled after the ones at Disney. The hydroponic always outperforms the raised bed. It is also less prone to damage from foraging deer and insect pests. If I had the system inside a greenhouse like commercial facilities probably would, it would be even more protected from damage.
@PoseidonEntertainment
@PoseidonEntertainment 3 жыл бұрын
The Behind the Seeds is one of my favorite tours because it's just so surprisingly interesting and yet affordable for a Disney tour. You're also definitely not the only one who was interested in hydroponics because of Living with the Land, as I know someone who took the same tour with the intent of learning more about the process so that they could also start their own hydroponic growing. I think that the attraction itself inspiring people not just to learn more, but to actually pursue the growing techniques speaks to the success of early Epcot.

This is by far my favorite video of yours yet. I just recently discovered your channel and while I do find some of your perspectives a tad pessimistic, even those are filled with relevant insight. As for this video, I’m biased towards this ride as it beats every other ride in all of Disney and any other park I’ve been to for that matter. A great coaster can bring your body along for the trip, but Living With the Land inspires the mind long after you exit. I have 7 plants I’ve been growing for years now that I bought from this attraction. You’re insight into the practicality of these methods was fantastic. Still, I think you spend so much effort on large scale industrial practicality that you forgot to mention individual applications for families. Not all change takes place on the macro level and enough micro transactions can lead to substantial changes as well. For example, my family and I are building a backyard fish pond with plumbing to water our seasonal gardens using ideas of concept and behind the scenes plumbing lessons we learned on the Behind the Seeds tour. And it’s all because of this ride and the inspiration it gave us while we rode this attraction again and again. We’re not all Elon Musk types after all, but I feel like Living With the Land truly impacts people on an individual level that no thrill or IP ride can so we don’t have to change the lives of millions, but rather just our own. Anyway, thank you for this video. It was an absolute treat and has me even more excited for completing our home project.

Currently I’m in Mongolia, as an English teacher in Ulaanbaatar. I’m going to grad school soon for public policy and international development, and I must say being in an arid country where little agriculture is possible, vertical farming would be a great boon both for human health and the economy here. As you said, it is about initial costs with many of these new techniques and technologies, but the developed world should be looking to fund these projects in developing countries to incentivize them to move away from the traditional and more destructive methods of industry and energy.

My mom had a small aeroponic tower like those in living with the land. The plants grew like crazy, I highly recommend aeroponic/hydroponics for small home gardens, if you can afford it. The one problem is if the power cut out for any reason-the plants would start shriving up within hours. Luckily they could usually bounce back after it was turned back on.

Epcot's living with the land has been peddling their hydroponic farming tech for over 40 years but where are all the urban farms using this technology? I have seen one in the Bahamas and perhaps Singapore. What they need to do is find out ways to grow steaks in lab dishes and mickey pretzels on vines using fish poop for fertilizer. That is how they grow lettuce for Epcot salads don't they?

Thanks for another deep dive. Living of the Land and Epcot as a whole (not really world showcase) feels like a Tomorrow 2.0 but more on the community or global level. It has a county or world's fair level presentation while opening the visitors eyes to alternative farming techniques. After 40 years, it would have been nice to see these farm to table methods literally practiced on the Walt Disney World property. Could these exhibit been the look behind the scenes of the sourcing and procurement of the food that is utilized on property. And this could have been a full cycle study. I am not the advocating a full sustaining community, but more of an exploration. I can understand how these exhibits could become obsolete over time, if left on the same script. But these labs and exhibits could be active studies with the input from universities and industry. It would seem logically that this attraction with the healthy cultivation of food would be a nice complimentary discussion of nutrition and the maintaining a healthy body. Discussion and inspiration make these attractions relevant today! But first listen to this message from Cola-Cola.

I loved Living in the Land as a kid and was surprised that it was pretty much unchanged when I visited again 20 years later. I know one of the things said about my country in the attraction (Saudi Arabia) turned out really bad. They were talking about how Saudi Arabia was turning the desert green with new technology but by the time I visited again, I knew for a fact the program had failed and was being phased out by the government. In the end, it was too water and fertilizer intensive and the country had depleted its water aquifers chasing food independence. Sad, but the country is focusing more on smaller scale cash crops now.

The short answer is that it is possible to farm with these methods, the long answer is that the big corporations who control Big Farming aren't going to change a damn thing unless it makes money for them, or if the EPA forces changes. It would be nice if everyone could have their own little plot of land to at least supplement their pantries, and it would be even easier to grow with techniques like hydroponics, but that's not even allowed in many towns (the right to grow is actually on my town's ballot this year).
