How Verstappen’s Driving Style Will Win F1 Titles

Max Verstappen is known as an aggressive, sometimes hot-headed racer who looks like he’s always on the limit - but interestingly, his driving style paints a completely different picture.

What is it about Verstappen’s driving style that makes him one of the fastest drivers on the F1 grid, how is he extracting the most from his Red Bull F1 car and how does his style compare to other F1 drivers? All of that, coming up.
First, let’s have a look at Verstappen’s racing line. You may have heard that drivers like Verstappen, Hamilton and Vettel drive a “squarer” racing line. But what is a “square” racing line, what are the benefits and how does Verstappen use it to his advantage?
The reason a racing line goes from the outside, to inside and back to the outside of a track, is to open up the corner as much as possible. The shallower the arc through the corner, the more speed you can take through it. This is called the geometric racing line - it’s essentially how the line would look if you used a compass to draw it.
However, this doesn’t take in to account the fact that the car typically needs to decelerate into, and accelerate out of, each bend. With this change of speed, the dynamics of the car are shifting with load being transferred around and the balance of grip changing.
Therefore, the fastest way through a corner is not the geometric line, rather it’s something we call the ideal racing line.

I'm always amazed at the footage of Verstappen when he spins in that Brazil race. He actually stops fighting the slide and waits till he knows he has traction again before turning out of it. Most drivers in the wet panic and just keep sliding while braking and turning

You can release the brakes when you know you're turning back the right way and then keep momentum and be facing the right way to recover from the spin

The kid is an incredible talent whose had access to everything he needs to maximize his potential. More importantly, he seems to have the passion for it. Will be interesting to see how the rule/car changes of 2022 affect him -- everyone, really. Congrats on calling the title winner a season and a half early.

He will be great again. Verstappen his talent and experience will pay off in new scenarios. Even though he is young he has so much racing experience. And I believe he will adapt quickly for the new car and rules. The only question remains which constructors builds the fastest car.

Thats why I became a fan of him since he debuted in F1. He is just a pure racecar driver--just raw speed and probably the highest race IQ besides maybe Hamilton. He can read a situation and make the correct action without any hesitation. There are a lot of fast drivers that don't win races because they hesitate when an opportunity presents itself, whereas Max knows exactly where his car needs to be and has the confidence to put it there when the window opens.

@@psk5746 There's far more to it than Seb being in the best car. He is incredibly talented and quick, and likely would still have a championship even if he never drove for Red Bull. Nonetheless, the way he utterly dominated weekends (easily securing pole then building up these massive gaps to drivers behind) was special, and it was a feat that Mark Webber was able to achieve very few times despite having the same machinery.

I wonder if his predicting of what the car will do comes from sim stuff since he spends a lot of time on iRacing. I know for me, going from real life to the sim in the beginning, i realized you have to drive in a proactive manner instead of a reactive manner because you're not getting any seat of the pants feedback from the car. So you learn all the idiosyncrasies of what a car will do in any given situation.

Nah it comes from being Dutch he thinks learning to kart so young in unpredictable Dutch weather made him what he is. Iirc he said the Dutch line after media asked why he was so much better in the rain at Interlagos in 2016 Edit: I mean that his godly abilities come from that and driving so young rather than shit like Sim racing which he does as a hobby

To put it simply max has a gift for “seat of the pants driving,” keeping the car on its grip limits, and keeping his momentum up. He’s able to predict what the car will do instead of reacting to what it’s doing because of the information he gets through the seat.

I would argue that his formative years were in karting as a kid from 4-and-up, meaning he learned these skills so young they are low-level ingrained in his brain. The later series he raced in, like F3, has 'only' been honing these skills.

This racing line is in Ayrton Senna’s book “Principles of race driving” written 30 years ago. He mentions breaking the rear away with the throttle to rotate the car on corner exit as well.

Thanks very much for this analysis, it is great to hear about the intracacies of each F1 driving style. Would it possible for you to make a video explaining what made Kimi Raikkonen's driving style so fast in the 2000s and beyond. I know that he is not considered to be the driver he once was, but as proven by later Ferrari performances he still has the ability to fight with the very best in the sport. It would also be interesting to hear about how he suffered with the notorious front end issues of 2014 and how this created the gap to Alonso etc.

well the thing is… his driving style is actually clean and that’s super obvious in qualis but with people around him it always looks like he does push things way too far. With his racing line being so square it means that he’s always near track limits, so catching a car besides him in a corner means that he’s able to follow his normal racing line while at the other car is forced to give him the minimal space for him to stick on track (exactly what he’ll do whiteout a car there anyway) but it gives the illusion is a dive bomb

As cool as that would be to see, I don't think it's possible. Onboard footage really wasn't a thing back then, and the TV footage was too grainy to accurately see what the drivers were doing. There was also no telemetry to see how they used the brake and throttle, and as both are dead, you couldn't exactly ask them about it

I've casually followed racing, but my knowledge extended only to clipping the apex. The 'square' technique was a real eye-opener, in taking into consideration the dynamic forces on the car at various parts of the corner. Very interesting and informative. Thanks.

And it really all depends on the car characteristics. F1 cars with extreme HP can afford to lose more speed and accelerate out of corners. An MX-5 would be much closer to the geometric line because it doesn't have much acceleration, so it needs to carry more speed into the corners.

You have a real gift for detail and economy (there's a shorter term for it I'm sure) and however familiar I think I am with a topic you always seem to add something new. I hope you don't mind me making a request, I'd love to see a more general video on Alonso as the other one was a bit car specific and I suppose I'd really like to you analyse all of the great/interesting drivers of the last 30 years, purely for the availability of decent onboard video otherwise it would be every driver ever! @@filmandfirearms ah okay. My point stands. Only Alonso and his deliberate initial understeer specific to the Renault, and Sennas throttle blips is actually something unique he has highlighted. The big talking point of this video - square of the corner, is not unusual from Verstappen. His dry driving style has no correlation to why he was fast in the wet, the car simply was hooked up in the video he constantly mentions. Same as Vettel back in Monza 2008 in the Toro Rosso.

Considering that F3 drive you showed was during his *only* year of pre-F1 car racing, you've got to acknowledge his natural skill. Ironically, given how people perceive him, I think a lot of drivers considered to be "slow" (relative to those who fling their cars around) are actually just smooth and deliberate like him. JB, Prost, Hill Snr & Jr, Jim Clarke... All champions with a smooth, precise steering action, and on their day, unbeatable. If you can get video of Max in F3 in Germany (Norisring? It was a while back now!) - it will help prove it to the naysayers. It was underwater all weekend - think Canada 2011 plus Noah, on a concrete(? .concrete-looking anyway) track. Even the safety car didn't look planted. IIRC, Max was about the only one who looked to be on rails - won all 3 races, and it was the meeting after him winning all three at Spa. His boss (Mattersitch or however it's spelled. I've never seen it written 🤷) actually said during a brief prepodium interview with C4 after Max' first win at Spielberg that it was that weekend that made him call Marko and inform him that he _was_ going to sign the kid lol! I'm no fanboi (or rather fangirl. I'm still a Damon girl lol), but I remember seeing him at Spa for the first time and yelling at hubby that I was watching a future F1 champion. The next race weekend, I was triply sure. As long as he gets a car which it good enough (won't need to be the best. Much like Lewis - good enough will do him too), he'll win it. I'd like to see him fulfil his potential and win more than one. Yes, I would also like to see Lewis win at least 7 total (8 would be better) and Charles win at the very least, one. He's just got to get lucky with Ferrari getting their act together because he has the talent in bucket loads. Aren't we lucky to be watching right now? So much talent in the field!

Predictive rather than reactive. That's all I was thinking while watching that wet Brazilian race. Max was making everything happen, creating his rotation rather than chasing it, as so many do in the wet. Catching that slide was a wonderful job. It all happened so fast, but he acted like he had all the time in the world. Like he knew it was coming and already knew what to do.

Wow this videos are great. You know what might be cool for a later series is looking at mistakes that famous drivers have made, and what they might have done differently. I'm especially curious about Vettel's crash at Germany 2018, where he looked completely helpless and just seemed to steer the car straight off the circuit. Thanks again!

you mentioned leclerc ... i would love to see a video of you breaking down his technique ... whenever I watch him - in my mind he is a master of oversteer, i.e. he is always on the limit because he has so much control of whichever amount of oversteer coming ... but i'm not sure if am right. can you confirm or differ? thanks
