Pretty interesting. Basketball as chess. So, if I understand it correctly the principle is based on everyone being able to shoot from outside. So, this year when Spellman showed he could shoot 3s and when Pachall started to make 3s Villanova started to win convincingly.

QUOTES FROM NCAA ANALYSTS AROUND THE LEAGUE & CURRENT COACHES : "Jay Wright has achieved his success without top talent, something no other top coach has done, including K" " He's reinventing the game of CBB with the emphasis on 3-pt shooting and versatile, switching D. Wright is a genuine innovator in ways that the other top coaches are not" "Bilas says Jay Wright is the standard bearer, the Coach K, of the next generation" "Which coaches are best at developing talent" "Donte DiVincenzo recorded just one start as a redshirt freshman before winning Most Outstanding Player honors at the 2018 Final Four as a sophomore. A few weeks after that, he was taken with the 17th pick in the NBA draft" "Let's agree to call that player development" "As you might expect, Villanova's Jay Wright tops my rankings of coaches who have shown the best results in terms of player development over the past eight years" " Entering last year’s N.C.A.A. tournament, Wright expected to lose two of his best players, Mikal Bridges and Jalen Brunson, to the N.B.A. draft. But after the Wildcats beat Michigan in the final, two underclassmen - forward Omari Spellman and guard Donte DiVincenzo - decided to turn professional as well" "Had Spellman and DiVincenzo returned, Villanova would have been favored to repeat as national champion. Even if only one had come back, Villanova would have been among the favorites. Instead, all four players were selected in the first 33 picks of the draft" " Villanova is one of the most well-respected fanbases in the nation and that is due to many reasons. For starters, they are very gracious winners. While some fanbases might aggressively brag about consistent winning and raising championship banners, these fans seem to take winning in stride and show their respect for their opponent" "And I think that this has a lot to do with their leader, head coach Jay Wright, as well. One of the classiest head coaches in the country, Wright is seemingly always the first person to praise his opposition in every game" Bilas says Villanova has not only the best culture in D1 basketball but in his opinion in all of college sports .

@theprezidentgaming

James Che you're probably not seeing your talent correctly. If nobody can really shot from the outside... look at Memphis 2014. Or teach them how to shoot like a coach should

If they can't shoot they should be able to make for it with athleticism and iso game. Break the opponent down off the dribble, or cut off ball. They aren't good players if they can't make up for their inefficient shooting.

Recently, on ESPN, Dick Vitale was crying about how the 3 point line was ruining the game and rules needed to be changed. I would think that point of view is representative of an old school point point of view and I could not disagree more with him. I think the current 3 pt line and Jay Wright’s philosophy is great for college basketball because it’s more exciting, encourages proper spacing and team play, makes for better shooters, and it’s exciting. I hope Villanova’s model influences more teams to play the way they do and that the NCAA keeps the 3 pt line the way it is.
@bballbreakdown
@bballbreakdown 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah. I imagine Dickie V was concerned about shot quality which is a concern

@jingqi9106
@jingqi9106 6 жыл бұрын
BBALLBREAKDOWN I’d say Villanova’s shot selection was pretty good given the results and how well they shoot the ball. Jay Wright works extensively on the 3 with his players and his offense is geared to maximize it. I think a lot of coaches could learn from Jay and Jay himself has improved as a coach over the years and recruits to his system.
@Acemulder
@Acemulder 6 жыл бұрын
The problem with moving the 3 point line out is it actually will benefit the top 20 to 50 schools the most. Let's face it, the top teams get the best players and obviously the further out you move the 3 point line the more that favors the best players (which is why the NBA line is out further because the players are much better). But then you won't see as many upsets in the tournament because the 3 is a great equalizer for the smaller programs. Using Wright's philosophy and system a mid major program can be built to make a deep run in the tournament. As an example--if you eliminated the 3 entirely then the focus would go back to big men making high percentage shots and Duke and Kentucky with its 5 star big man recruits would dominate every year. Who wants to go back to that? Villanova was a much more exciting team to watch then the old school team that focuses on low post play.
@neetrab
@neetrab 5 жыл бұрын
@@Acemulder agreed and never thought of it that way. Also, now that you mention how the top teams get all the most talented players, I figure it's more so that they are taller than most program's avg players. So shooting from the 3 further back wouldn't be that much harder than now. I could be wrong, I don't play the game.

Dunno, SSOL Suns were doing this 14 years ago with college teams emulating since, as a solution to the "we didnt get the big man recruits we needed, time to roll the dice" issue, which is in no way unique to Villanova this year. The GS Warriors finally pit it together, as did these Villanova guys, but I don't think they get the credit for changing the game, just credit for the successful implementation of the change.

Correction... The Philadelphia suburbs. Villanova is in the neighboring county of Montgomery. People in the city only claim Villanova as "a Philadelphia school" when they are doing well. Otherwise they dismissively call it "that school in the suburbs" where the rich kids go because most city dwellers are Temple fans and/or alumni. But the Temple program has been so pathetic for so long and Villanova looks like it might be the next powerhouse in the NCAA as they start to attract higher caliber recruits... the people in the city are starting to lay claim to Villanova as a Philadelphia school. But dont let them... always refer to Vilanova as "That school in the Philadelphia SUBURBS"... the one where the rich kids go... just to let them know that we dont want to be claimed as a part of the city in the first place.

Christopher Moody Also Jay Wright will not recruit high recruits like he did before bc they didnt fit his system. One of two here and there, but what high recruits want to sit on the bench for 2 years? Not too many will want to.

Wow I'm sure Rick Pitino will be SHOCKED to know that it is Jay Wright(?) who finally(?) won while using the three point line more effectively than his opponents! LOL.

To be fair to Jay, his philosophy on 3 point shooting has been the same since 2012 when he took a cue from one of his assistants who did a sabremetric type study. But I agree that his 2nd Championship in 3 years really puts the exclamation point on the effectiveness of what he's been able to do

I am, in no way, trying to knock Coach Wright, who has shown an incredible ability to continue to grow after ascending to a preeminent position as a head coach in a major, power conference. It's just that many coaches have taken a lot of heat for shooting "too many threes" since the mid-90s. And one of those coaches is sporting a few national championships. That is to say nothing of the very many small schools that have pulled major upsets by featuring the three-point line. I, nonetheless, get coach Nick's point, the NBA has adopted European style offences (Thank you Coaches D'Antoni and Popovich) and we are starting to see the influence of those changes trickling down to the college ranks, with Coach Wright leading the charge.

Now we can say that Stephen Curry revolutionized the game of basketball as Jordan did during his time. What can we remember about LBJ?
