How Vince McMahon created the WWE and conquered the world of pro wrestling

Before Vince McMahon and his company WWE ruled the world of professional wrestling, the landscape looked completely different.
For decades, professional wrestling in North America operated under a system of informally defined "territories." Each territory represented an individual promotion with its own stable of talent that drew crowds to local arenas and broadcast the product on regional television stations.
In 1982, Vincent Kennedy McMahon purchased his father's company, the World Wrestling Federation. For almost two decades, he endured an epic conquest of the pro wrestling world that led to where he is today: standing tall as the undisputed king of the industry.
This is the story of how his victory was achieved, with insight from WWE Hall of Famers Jim Ross and Pat Patterson.

Seriously, had there been no Vince McMahon JR, you don’t think someone along the lines of Ted Turner or someone with some big financial clout during the 1980s-1990s would’ve looked at wrestling and wondered “hey they have this in every other state or town” and ultimately formulating that “hey this could be the next circus/stars on ice/musical act/etc.”? If cable wouldn’t have doomed the territory system, the internet absolutely would’ve made it a relic.

Watch A&E biography of Terry "Hulk Hogan" Bollea. Vince McMahon made a deal with Hulk Hogan and turned pro wrestling from a show where athletes were barely making a living to where the biggest stars became multi-millionaires in the 1980s. Pro wrestling would be struggling to find athletes in an era where NFL players now sign contracts worth hundreds of millions of dollars without the business genius Vince McMahon Jr.

Why is Vince McMahon successful? Because he does it his way. He doesn't listen to fans. He doesn't care how much the niche hardcore fanbase complains when they don't get what they want. Stupid take, Vince only pushed Austin in 97' because he listened to the fans. The only reason Danielson got his main was because Vince listened to the fans. The only reason we got heel Reigns was because he listened to the fans. So listening to the fans can't be that bad can it?

@@jamielambert1850 Vince pushed Austin because Austin represented the culture back then. Also, if the marks were the reason Vince decided to push Bryan in the main event then how come he decided to go with Batista to win the Rumble? You can't have it both ways.

@jamielambert1850 Жыл бұрын
@@yokaigypsy That last comment makes absolutely no sense. Vince did it his way by going with Batista to win the rumble, but after he realised the people loved Danielson he changed his mind, listened to them and bobs your uncle, we had one of the best storylines the wwe has ever had. Vince did it 'his way' on numerous other occasions and did not listen to the fans, for example WM32, and look what happened, one of the worst manias of all time. I don't understand you last comment at all, I never tried to have anything both ways, I was consistant with my view and never contradicted myself, so I don't know what you are on about.

The only reason that vince remained the top pro wrestling owner was his brain. I mean he got such ideas to spread wwf or wwe by fighting with others. Even in this pg era he is holding our interest by putting unthinkable sometimes. He had no chance in 90s to get over WCW bcz they got everything better than wwf. But again VINCE used his genius and won. I gotta respect his intelligence though sometimes I get angry on him for making wwe pg

TNA, WWA, GFW, and ROH all tried. Surprising how they’re all still standing. AEW at least has an NFL owner's money behind them. Territories? Seriously? You do realize what made that system work was that each wrestler never got too stale and was able to pop up in another town since most folks never heard of him or her before. Today's internet is yesterday's dirt sheets for free as if the paper is printed 24/7 and at your fingertips before, during and after each show. Once Vince was able to widdled down his major competition to just Ted Turner's WCW, USWA & SMW tried to live under Vince & Turner's shadows, where both also folded because there were only 2 companies left. Then even Turner's empire got swallowed into WWE!

Well i think Vince is a really smart man who really understands professional wrestling. Hell, he is the most knowledgeable about it. But the thing is, he has a different goal now. 30 years ago, he saw WWE as a wrestling promotion. Now, he see it as business. He focused on expanding consumers rather than focus on quality. I think this is the main reason that Jinder, Kofi, Becky and Drew (just to name a few) became so succesful. Let's also not forget the Saudi Arabia shows. He is a genius, he just viewed wrestling differently.

Vince had a "big picture" vision. Remember, at that time, 1982, when he bought the company, there was a big debate on whether it was "real or fake". The "territories" promoted it as a real sport, whereas Vince coined the term "sports entertainment". He basically told us, the fans, I'm not going to try and insult your intelligence, I just want to bring you the best product possible and I want you to enjoy it. Jim Ross said it best, the other "territories" refused to change their ways of promotion and went out of business. Definitely a risky and ballsy move by Vince, but it worked for a long time.....at least up until this PG era they have now!!

Against his dad's wishes he "outsmarts" men who have been in the business for decades? Yea right. This seems like the illuminati was done with the territory system and when their cable system came out they wanted 1 or 2 promotions only for their national brainwashing the masses campaign. Look at the new WWE logo it's a 33 right in plain sight. The old territory system was also illuminati but the higher ups were done with that system and handed the "Reigns" to Vince JR.

In Dallas, the WWF couldn't touch World Class Championship Wrestling. No doubt. Similarly, the Crockett territories in the south rejected everything WWF. Look no further than Black Saturday. Vince McMahon took over the TV time slot, and his shows were immediately crapped on by fans to the point where he had to sell back the time slot. If the promoters could have actually cooperated with one another (of course, they couldn't, see the AWA and what happened when they attempted to work with the USWA and World Class Championship Wrestling), they may have been able to survive. All they had to do is fight back instead of sitting on their thumbs hoping McMahon would spend himself out of business. He may not have, but Crockett sure did.

See it's simple bro Matches are scripted means winner and looser are already decided before the match but The moves they performed in the ring are real just like sports athletes You can simply say it's scripted not fake because they perform real moves,stunts etc...

Vincent Sr. left his famliy and only took the eldest. Vincent Jr. didn't even met his dad when he was 12. His father didn't even have any plans to improve the company he was about to sell to someone else until Vince Jr. saw potential in it and bought it.

rAGE in ThE CAgE Vince Jr. was involved in the business since he was a kid. Did you not know he was one of the early promoters for the business thanks to his father being the owner? Or are you just a Trump fan that believes everyone who inherited wealth did so with no help from their rich family?
@rageinthecage2073

Yeah as a kid he would go with his Dad on MSG to learn the business. Only after he bought it from his dad. What does Trump have to do with any of these though? I'm not even a Trump fan.

rAGE in ThE CAgE My point is that he was involved in the business from a very young age. Did he hustle? Yes. Was he a good salesman? Yes. Would he have been able to buy the business if he weren't born to his father? No.

LunarX Vince McMahon Jr actually grew up with his relatively broke single mother for most of his childhood. I've heard the guy recall stories of the multiple abusive stepfathers he had to deal with at the time. He was also sort of a delinquent youth who got in fights frequently. If I recall, he never even met his dad (Vince sr.) Until he was like 12 or something, and never lived with him for an extended amount of time as a child or young man. He'd occasionally visit his father from time to time and observe the business, but he didn't live with him full time.
