Today we are looking at the failure of VW wheel bearings. The bearing show are from the newer generation VW cars, about 2005.5 and up. While the older VW cars have different wheel bearings, they fail in basically the same way.Failed VW Wheel Bearings

In the bad good old days, we used to repack the wheel bearings with fresh grease. They almost never failed and when they did, it was cheap to fix. Modern wheel bearings are terrible, an expensive scam. Instead of buying a few pennies worth of fresh grease every year or two, we are forced to spend hundreds of dollars on new hubs and bearings.

I agree, however felt nice to have new hubs too at the same time. I have however suffered a second failure of the rear left in the same year. Don’t know why. First set lasted 8 years and this was replaced at the dealer

When my bearing went bad it definitely had the sound but it also made the car feel like it had a choppy tire or bad suspension it was so bumpy driving.

What you said about the helicopter sound sparked my interest.. I have a 99 Passat and the is an insanely loud banging sound that is exactly like that and it sounds like its coming from the right front and I have checked the brakes, wheel/lugs and all the suspension and can not figure it out.. unfortunately the bearing is pressed in so I'm assuming it will be a very expensive fix?

Can wheel bearings affects the transmission if we didn’t change them on time? What the worst going to happen if we ignore to replace them immediately after we hear the noise? Also I noticed I got the noises from the bearings only on winter when it is really very cold about below 25 degree

Whats the easiest way to change the rear wheel bearing on a awd 2010 tiguan? Manual says to take the housing off. Doesn't even mention taking the bearing from the housing so I'm hoping there is a way to pull less bolts than the manual suggests as I like in snow country where we use rock salt on the roads

Is my 2012 Jetta S the kind where I can just remove the complete bearing/hub assembly or like my 07 Honda CR-V where the front ones require the bearing to be pressed in? Weird thing on the Honda is the rear ones are replaceable as one unit but, like I said, the front ones require owning a press. I did the rear myself but was forced to pay for the front ones. How is it on my 2012 Jetta (front & back). Please, replies ONLY from people that know FOR SURE about my particular year and model. No general “They’re all about the same on those years” type of answers.

I just bought a used 2014 Jetta sportwagen tdi a month ago with 50k miles. This vehicle sat at the silver dome for a couple of year. I took it back to the dealership bc of crazy loud road noises from the front left tire. Test drove the car (which seems faster now) on the highway and now I can hear the front right making the same noises. Could this be that the bearings warped/rusted from sitting two years without movement? Will I likely need to replace the back too? The car is extremely loud on the highway. Anyone have any thoughts if vw is warranting the hubs on tdi’s?

Hi Charles, love your work and these videos. I know it’s an old video but I just wanted to ask you a question. My mk5 golf Gti turns on the tyre pressure, traction control and the abs warning light when I get up to around 70 mph. I think this could be corrosion built up on the abs ring but does it come as a full wheel bearing assembly? Any ideas? Thanks in advance
@HumbleMechanic
@HumbleMechanic 6 жыл бұрын
possible, I would look at the tires themselves. Be sure you have the same tires all around. That can be an issue on the Mk5. I had one with 1 tire that was either worn too much, or a slightly different size (225 vs 235). It would trip the lights on a hard turn

@@joshmartlew501 Don't mean to revive an old thread but just wanted to add a comment in case it can help someone else. I had a similar problem as what you describe. My ABS and ESP warning lamp would come on when I started hitting 60+ mph. It got progressively worse (as in, lighting up at lower and lower speeds) until it would come on literally as soon as I drove off after starting the car. Took it in for diagnostics at a well-known franchise (in UK) and was told I needed a new ABS sensor (£45) + wheel bearing kit (£150) Went for a second opinion at an independent garage and the guy just took out the sensor, sprayed some WD40 and cleaned wtih a rag... the fault disappeared. Nearly skinned for £200 for work that I didn't even need.

If its a suspect wheel bearing, the noise will be loudest at the hub with the worn bearing. Get the vehicle up off its wheel at the appropriate end, secure with axle stands and firmly chock the wheels still on the deck. Rotate the free wheels and use an engineer's stethoscope or a stick to listen to the rotating bearing by touching the hub. You can use a socket and speed brace on a wheel nut to get the spin speed up a bit. The task needs an assistant.

Hey Charles, I have had an undiagnosable vibration since I bought my 2018 Sportwagen last September. Dealer has replaced haldex, both guibos right axle, and right wheel bearing. I have tried 4 sets of wheels, 3 sets of tires. Vibration is in the steering but very light, also in my gas pedal, feels like a cell phone. Techs keep telling me it’s not exhibiting bearing symptoms closely enough for it to be replaced but I’m running out of ideas. I feel every road surface through the pedal as well. Any insight? I’m kinda going crazy

My Mk6 had a crazy loud right rear bear and now that is done and I swapped out the suspension for Koni yellows and eibach pro-kit springs I can tell I'll be doing the others soon. Unless of course it's a result of the tire setup (allseasons front and winter's rear due to a bubble in RF winter tire). Honestly I feel like she really held off on showing her age all the way to 100k and now she's requesting some TLC.

Hey Charles! I've got a 2014 VW B7 Passat 1.8T, just hit 70k miles. I've got a loudddd rumble noise around 55-68MPH once I go past that it's either very quiet or gone. Before 55 it's not really noticeable either. Around 55-68MPH it's annoyingly loud. Funny thing is, whenever I turn left the noise goes away until I straighten the wheel, and then it comes back. It doesn't go away if I turn right, just left. I was thinking it's the wheel bearing but I'm not entirely sure. I had a set of 17's aftermarket with hub centric rings, and it didn't happen. Winter time came around, took it to Goodyear, put on my factory 16's with winter tires and it's happening now. I don't think they took off the hub centric rings, as it wasn't returned to me, just the bolts.. could that also contribute to the problem? Or maybe they did take it off and didn't put it in the box for me..

FUCK! I've been chasing a steering wheel vibration for a year, mk5, 2 things, my steering wheel vibrates at exactly 64 mph. The faster I go the vibration goes away or minimizes, if I set cruise at 70 or higher it's almost gone. The other red flag, I did get wheel speed sensor flashes on my dash a few times, the logo with the car and the skid marks, ESP warning? I hope this is my problem but figuring out which side it is is going to be the tricky part.
