Walmart has had a terrible reputation for at least a decade now, but how did it happen? When did Walmart go from a store that people enjoyed shopping at to a chore that they would rather avoid?

I don’t think it helps that Walmart joined forces with FEMA years ago and have turned their stores into literal prisons/detention centers. Casa Padre. Same, I was there, on door, for 3 and half years. I was treated like sh*t by the higher ups, even though I would go in on my days off, go in early, or stay later then I was supposed to be. I’ve done that more times than I could count. Costumers would treat us, on door, like trash. Regional managers lying about people not working, even though they were actively working and helping someone. They decided to have some of us to help run registers. They switched to those stupid handhelds to check receipts. Which no one liked, not even the costumers. Click and Pull was a pain in *ss because the handhelds never worked, not to mention that it would kill the flow of the lane at the exit door, before they decided to use the handheld for normal receipts, which destroyed all momentum of the lane at the exit door. They had really contradicting policies of “Being fast and accurate,” but you would get yelled for double checking things. Our regional manager told me to, and I quote, “Just mark the slip and say, ‘Have a good day Mr. or Mrs. Smith.’ That’s all you need to do.” Those were the exact words they used. Then one of our useless managers would yell at me for doing what I was told to do by their boss. Whenever you had to call a supervisor to get something out of the cage, it’ll take about five minutes for them to even get over there to get the item, on a good day. I’m glad I’m no longer working in that sh*thole of a company.

Yeah don’t work at Walmart I worked there from April 7,2017-October 25,2019. I wouldn’t wish this job on my worst enemy. When it comes to the managers it’s like talking to a brick wall. It could be the stupidest way to do something,if you don’t do it their way even if it takes you longer to do it your wrong. I remember a time it was close to the holidays understaffed as usual ,we had two trucks ended up finishing late. Everyone got a coaching (write up) just because we finished a bit late one by one called in the office. The management expects so much from the workers but don’t wanna pay the acceptable amount, you cannot pay your pills on $11.22 itself. In basic words don’t work for Walmart there so many jobs out here the pay better and you will actually get appreciated for the work you do.

I remember the store manager saying “Cap 2 is the backbone of the store.” What that really meant was we work harder than anyone while getting paid the worst (except cart pushers). Got so tired of working hard and getting bitched at anyways. And they wonder why everyone leaves cap 2 eventually? Produce, OGP, and cap 1 didn’t look so bad. I'm with you on the Walmart vibe. It's like there is some sort of emotional black hole that sucks joy from life the longer you're there. I had a similar feeling when I was stuck in Barstow for a day. Big surprise, that town has a Walmart based economy. Employees not getting set hours is another factor. Maybe you'll work 30. Maybe you'll work 15. Oh, and don't count on coming in the same days or times each week. They'll just randomly change your schedule from week to week because whoever is in charge of such things is apparently just using a dartboard. And most likely on crack. This sort of scheduling has been shown in multiple studies to have severely detrimental effects on employee health. Speaking of employee health, at one point Walmart took secret life insurance policies out on about 350,000 employees. Unfortunately, it was not for the benefits of the employees, but instead any payouts went straight to Walmart. It was only discovered after an insurance company accidentally sent a check to a deceased employee's spouse. As one would imagine, she was none too pleased when the payee was listed as Walmart.

And Wal-Mart's insurance doesn't want to pay for medical expenses that comes when an associate is injured on the job. They refuse & have the bill sent to a collection agency. At times you have 2 or 3 associates will be standing around while a costumer is waiting for assistants Or they'll just walk past you without even asking if you need assistance. A friend waited for 30 or 40 mins & 2 pages for a manager to get the keys to the electronics. Finally he decided to leave but that's when the managers approached him. My father worked for WalMart Logistics for 27 years. He worked his way up to managing an entire distribution center. He implemented logistics programs that saved the company millions in overhead. Then, one weekend someone that worked for him sprained their ankle on a shift (when he wasn't even there), and went to HR complaining that they weren't told they could get medical attention and threatened to sue. My dad was fired a week later in December 2018, and lost not only his job but about $170k in stock options. I worked for WalMart for 7 years as an overnight stocker. It permanently changed me. I endured so much bullshit. Needless to say, most of my checks were pumped right back into the store, because you can (and are encouraged) to buy everything you need for daily life right there in the same store. I hate WalMart. At least in my store (before I left) cart pushers were treated worse then cashiers, we got blamed for everything (including shit that wasn’t our fault) after I left... that’s when they realized the hardest worker left and wised up Side note: their “rollbacks” are a lie, I followed a few items I wanted, each time they would have a “rollback” it was marked up a dollar or two but kept the sales price stayed the same, the only real deals are in the clearance isles Another side note: the only way to get any unions in Walmart, you need to create a problem within the problem (for example, a protest to cover up a union rep coming in and signing the employees up for it) Another intro idea (or two) -get out of bed and have a “routine” you do -show yourself getting your ass kicked in a game - carry in groceries and put them away -doing laundry -(or just stuff in general)

Misrepresenting sale prices is a pretty common business practice for all retailers, even otherwise trustworthy ones. Mostly because they'll always list the original price as MSRP, even though very few products ever sell for as high as their MSRP (with the exception of some products that are tightly controlled. Apple for instance doesn't allow retailers to mark their products down without express permission from them).

So, this is my personal experience with having worked at Walmart for 2-ish..maybe 3….months: I just quit working at the Walmart Deli and even though I’m now currently looking for a job, I couldn’t be more happier for quitting. First of all, I desired part-time, but they said I couldn’t get the job if I didn’t work full time. I was also told that I couldn’t get the job if I didn’t work weekends-the most busy days. I don’t mind working on weekends, but was it really hard for them to understand it was my first job? I guess it was… They could not keep the employees for the Deli. They half trained me because like two weeks in, a co-worker got fired, and a little bit later, most of my co-workers quit all except for two people. They ended up making me work alone at night as I was a closer, while being half trained and got onto me for not completing the work on time (threatening to fire me) when they didn’t even train me well enough to get it done on time. I got to the point where I could actually get it all done 10-15 minutes past when I should have gotten it all done after literally two weeks. And even with such improvements, the times I should get it done in was constantly held over my head and it wasn’t even recognized by anyone but my co-workers. I was in a near constant state of pure anxiety and had a few panic attacks. I brought these concerns to them, but they offered no help but to say they would hire more people. And that took like a week and a half before they could even get 1 person. I was thinking of taking a PTO or time off, but knowing I had to work for three more weeks before I could actually take time off was just too much. My mental health was suffering at that point. I couldn’t think about anything other than work after work or on my off days. I quit have the mental, and physical, energy to do the things I both needed to do outside of work and things I liked. I became irritable towards my family because of the stress and anxiety. And soon…I started dreading the thought of going to work to the point where I was about to break down into tears. Because of all that I quit. And I couldn’t be more happier right now even though I am now looking for a non retail job. I’m now going to put emphasis on taking care of my own mental health when it comes to getting a job.

The only in-store job at Wal-Mart I’ve heard positive things about is the pharmacy, and as a former tech elsewhere I am inclined to believe it. You also nailed the whole horrible vibe of Wal-Mart, I deal with the worst of people there as fellow customers and used to work next to one such Wal-Mart, at an equally horrible store. At least when you go to Meijer, Costco or Kroger it seems lively, and as for electronics and other departments it’s worth just going to a specialized store.

Getting a video game, some ammo, finding an associate or two to open the locked glass displays for said items during the third shift, is easier said than done. Having worked as an overnight stocker in the past, I avoided electronics as much as possible. Even back when Dept 8 was on the GM side, I avoided going through the double doors at electronics because I knew I'd get stopped by somebody wanting something from a locked display. I sure as shit didn't have the key for it. Neither did most of the people on GM except for the managers on duty. The managers in training at the supercenter I worked at (N. Scottsdale- Forgot the store number. It's located Raintree/Northsight Blvd and east side Loop 101) were some of the most heartless and ruthless people I've ever worked for. I was so happy to leave that place. I didn't have another job lined up and didn't care.

Some do. I've been to a lot of Walmart locations lately that just don't have them anymore, but I know damned well they used to. The Walmart nearest me used to have 5 or 6 of those scanners placed strategically throughout the store, with big signs on the poles clearly showing where they were. Now they've got one buried near the bicycles with zero signage declaring its location. Maybe it's a choice from the regional managers not to have them.

@@supermario1177 Its a normal thing for large, publicly traded companies. They are beholden to their stock-holders first and foremost, and as such they will cut every corner they can when it comes to their employees and services so long as their share prices continue to increase at a reasonable rate. Walmart does what it does because it is given the power to do so. The company itself isn't inherently evil; its doing what it was designed to do to the fullest extent possible. The problem is mostly that workers in this country have very few real rights. Those they do have are easily worked around (i.e. not allowing people to work full-time by artificially cutting hours to the detriment of the customer experience). Even unions, which on the surface are meant to fight for those rights, are usually just a collection of lawyers whose job it is to keep those they represent just unhappy enough to keep paying their dues.

FWIW - I encourage folks to go to Wal-Mart - pick 10 products you buy there regularly and then go to Target or a near by grocery store - in most cases you are only saving 10-25 cents for each item. They have slowly been creeping their prices up over the last decade. When I used to save 20 bucks now its like $12. There are somethings in my area that can only be found at Wal-Mart and honestly - that is the only time I darken their door.

They spend money on stuff they dont need and i cant even enjoy shopping cause its always someone on my back in the aisle in packs. So I got hit with bullshit “no call no shows” and I was fired. Truly retarded. If I request a Friday shift on Monday. I shouldn’t have to wait until Friday 8:00 am for a 11am shift. They don’t care.

So of course people come over to MY area all pissed off because no one shows up when they mash the call button. Also your point about none of the equipment working is spot on. I worked in the photo department, and the fucking kiosks would break down multiple times a day. We had people spend HOURS editing their pictures and end up losing progress, and then we'd have to deal with their screams and insults while management would never even call a tech in. Also we were forbidden from putting up signs to warn customers of known and constantly recurring issues, so the same exact preventable thing would happen every day, and every day we'd have to let these people take their day out on us, and management would give 0 fucks because they were never there to deal with it. I legit had a fight or flight reaction for 3 years after quitting any time I even walked by that hellhole, it's fucking eats away at the soul.

Walmart is poorly run. It's because of the lack of retail experience with the managers. All of the managers don't have experience. Only reason that they're managers they been there for years. Stacking up items and zoning doesn't give you experience in purchasing or hiring. I currently work at Walmart. I have ran my own business for 46yrs. I have more purchasing and hiring knowledge than most of the managers. I even mentioned it on my resume. Instead of making me a manager. They gave the job to another guy with no experience. They made me a team associate. I was assigned to work at the home department. Restocking and zoning the items. You're right about the bad pay and terrible work conditions. If it wasn't for the associate like me and others. Walmart would be a failure. Because the damn managers can't run the store. Most of them just sit in the managers room doing nothing. And the customers are to blame for the associates looking pissed. They leave perishable items like meat and milk on shelves. After you straighten out the items. Only have them to throw them on the floor. Not only that why in the hell you buy a item only to return it? It's not broken or missing a part. Reason you find it cheaper at some other place. And fuck don't ask an associate that work in home department to unlock the case for razors, perfume, jewelry, ammo, video games and spray paint. We don't have the keys. Only people that work those department have the keys. And the damn customers are always complaining about the long lines. The long lines are because everyone is quitting. They're short of skill workers. They're hiring school kids. Most of the damn kids don't do anything. But walk around and watch videos on their phone.
