HEROD'S TEMPLE IN 3D: In this video we'll get to know the temple in Jerusalem at the time of Jesus and his apostles. But after all, which temple did Jesus know? The 1st temple was built by Solomon and was destroyed by the Babylonians in 586 BC. Upon returning from exile, the Jews rebuilt the temple as best they could (the temple of Zerubbabel), but it did not have the same glory as it had in the past.
When Herod became king he launched an extensive building program, the most ambitious project being a FULLY RENOVATED AND EXPANDED TEMPLE for Jerusalem. This was the temple that Jesus and his disciples knew. Herod was an Idumean, and this seemed to be a way of gaining support from his Jewish subjects.
