Smart smart smart. Everything about this build seems extremely well thought through. The adjustable-spacer dados in the drawers? Brilliant. Can’t wait to see more.

Clever design. If you think your project was primitive, I used no power tools to build my camper. My design was to put my solar components & things I rarely need under the bed. I still love watching how others have done it.

A Leer 180 model camper shell would give you a lot more headroom for sleeping and not hurt the gas mileage. I use a 2006 4x4 Tacoma access cab with the Leer 180 shell for my mining adventures in Nevada and live in the back for a week at a time offroad in the desert.

The addition of a DAC truck tent end might be something to consider. I have one for my Tacoma and gives you more room when you have tailgate and back hatch open. But still allows privacy and weather protection. I have a review of it in my channel.

Why do I get the vision of the movie Dumb and Dumber when he comes back with a motor bike and Jeff Daniels says "Just I think you can't any dumber you redeem yourself!" When I think this in comparison to the Toyota Camper. Awesome recovery from the camper build. The cool part about the camper build it is all documented! That is a valuable tool. How about magnets for the inside of the bed of the truck. You can also use the camper shell with some netting or shelves for linens or rolling up sleeping bags with bungee straps. Keep rocking!

How did you determine the length between the bottom and top bolts that carry the bearing. I understand the width of the tubing is an inch, but the bearing on the bolt will give a few mm of space. I’m in the middle of planning to build the slide drawers but haven’t come to a way of figuring out the measurements. Thanks

Thinking of doing a similar build on my truck for long trips. I was wondering how difficult it is to remove the shelf/platform from the bed of the truck? My wife and I really want to be able to have this but take it out, should we need to load up the truck for a move or something
@traviss2308
@traviss2308 4 жыл бұрын
I'm just starting to plan something like this for myself and this is a big concern for me too since I also use my truck for work. I feel like getting it out is doable as long as its narrow enough to fit between where the cap begins to bend inwards and the top of the wheel wells. Maybe put a hinge on the bed platform near the cab so you could fold part of it up to access mounting/tie-down points behind the drawers. You might be able to rig up a ratchet strap as a non-permanent solution. Alternatively, maybe build and fasten each drawer separately, and then just lay the bed platform on top. That way you could remove the bed platform and then individually unfasten and remove the drawers, negating the wheel well/height challenge. Those are a few ideas I've been toying around with. Best of luck!

Hi Owen and Mary, Happy New Year from The Great White North Given the vagaries of KZfaq, I have just now discovered your channel. Thank you so much for taking the time to post...I certainly appreciate the time and ingenuity you have put into your channel, and your build. On the matter of this particular video....you used 1/2" plywood for the platform and drawers...now that you have been using it for a while, how is it standing up? Are you happy with the 1/2", or would you have gone 5/8" or 3/4", particularly for the structural pieces? Most folks tend to over-engineer, myself included, but if the 1/2" has stood up, that is far better than something heavier Thanks so much once again. Be safe

I don't know if you are still responding to comments here, but I''m wondering how this held up for you. It seems to me that 1/2" plywood is too light for something like this. Would you go with 3/4" next time, or was 1/2" sufficient? Asking because I'm thinking about doing it myself for my new Taco.

@BoundForNowhere
@BoundForNowhere 5 жыл бұрын
No insultation, we left the camper shell as it came which was lined in a felt of sorts. It did great in the heat too we just would leave the vent windows open or the back hatch open at night to keep air moving!
@cortipascale
@cortipascale 5 жыл бұрын
Well done! Why you go for the Doublecab instead of the Supercab (1.5) on the Taco? Are you happy without a Roofvent at Night? Thx for sharing.
@BoundForNowhere
@BoundForNowhere 5 жыл бұрын
We wanted this set up to be as cheap as possible because we knew it would be temporary. We used this set up as a holdover while we figured out what our more permanent set up would be. By going cheap we could have some extra money in the bank in the event we found something we wanted to put a down payment on. As for the roof vent, yes we were fine without it. We just cracked the rear hatch to vent on warmer nights or left it open entirely if we were somewhere we felt comfortable doing that.

@BoundForNowhere
@BoundForNowhere 5 жыл бұрын
Yes you are correct! We sawed a groove into the top blank of the bed platform that it rotates into. It sticks up ever so slightly through the top of the platform but we never have felt it. Another reason we went that route was to save on clearance for some of the taller things in our drawer so it wouldn't drag as we pulled the drawers out!

Great project. I built a Toyota Tundra, still refining after 6 months, 2 road trips. You need to plan, measure, buy, build, fail, try out, repeat, to get it right. You need tools: table saw, drill, grinder, sewing machine, soldering, garage. You need skills: research, carpentry, sewing, organization, electric, auto, insulation, solar. Midway, I was near GVWR on my light truck as gear, armor, plywood, food, water, and persons adds up. So I removed rear seats to stay safe. Seems unreal for $400 in a weekend. Nice KZfaq skills!

Your truck camper looks great but the lack of headroom would make it a deal killer for me. I'd like to be able to sit up in there. Don't know what your budget is, but have you seen this company? belairshells.com/wood-n-alum They make truck camper shells for Tacos for a little over $3k. You could gain some vertical height and storage space while making it less claustrophobic in there. Maybe have room for a battery and a solar panel or two up top? Fantastic fan too? Refrigerator in the back seat of the Taco or the truck bed? I guess you got used to it over the past six months, so maybe it's a non-issue for you both.
