How we burn the Kansas Prairie
Now we are cooking with GAS! If you like fire this video is for you! Have you used a firestick before? This one is one that Farmer Derek made himself. This video is made for Farmer Derek's mom so she can hear the song "Prairie Fire". In this video, Farmer Derek explains why we burn prairies in Kansas. We hope you enjoy the song "Prairie Fire" as much as we do. The drone footage that shows the fire with the song really tells the story here. Thank you to Bethany for singing lead on it.

Farmer Derek lives and works on the Klingenberg Family farm and ranch. He works with his Dad and two brothers. They raise Corn, Soybeans, Wheat, Cattle, and Cats. They background all the cattle and then graze them in the Flint Hills and they end up at the feedyards in Western Kansas.
The farm was started in the mid 30's by his grandpa who immigrated from West Prussia in 1923 when he was 9.
Growing up, Derek's family priorities consisted of church, family, work, music, and eating a lot. He now has his own family of three cute girls along with his wife Kara. Derek spends his time working on the farm, dancing with his girls, and making KZfaq videos.

I've been doing wildland firefighting the last 5+ years from SD, NE, IA, ID, to CO and now SoCal. Im still fascinated when farmers do this on their own. I've always wanted to ask a farmer to give me a call when they do a burn on their land so I could watch and learn or help.

"Because the Native Americans burned, and that's all you really need to know." Thanks for this video, Derek, very well done indeed! I've enjoyed the owls greatly, thanks for those live cams too! Sorry for the loss of the eagles, but congrats on the gain of the Great Horned Owls! This is all good old clean and educational entertainment.....thanks much!

Native Americans practiced infanticide too. It was necessary 300 years ago, but we have progressed beyond the need for that. Do your research. Not only is he polluting the air, he is damaging his land. Burned fields yield less over time. You really should do some actual research before just taking his word for it. There are better ways. It's not that hard to find reliable, peer reviewed sources about this.

Awwwww, one of my favorite parts of Kansas is the Flint Hills! Having lived in Kansas for the better part of 50 years, I saw many burnings and the green that followed. We moved to Florida 4 years ago, and this was a beautiful reminder of my home state...thank you! Great song, too 👍🏻

I really like this song. Genuine folk music! I can see why your Mom likes it. The Flint Hills national anthem. I was in the Flint Hills once many moons ago and loved it! I bet the water tastes good too!

Hi Derek. could you cover (timelaps) the regrowth of the grass? No risk with the oil well (or perhaps it's a water one) ?

As someone from California, I find this video is a horror movie. Even pretty music doesn’t help. We’re in different worlds!

The science doesn't support the practice either. Your horror is justified.

Great video. I just got done helping a buddy burn 120 acres last weekend on some ground he cleared. I love the videos. Keep them up. I dont know if you remember, but 5 years or so ago we ran into y'all cutting wheat with my ex father in law from NZ who used to farm some of your ground.

Is your Firestick OSHA Approved? LOL It is actually quite amazing. Ever think about getting a Patent and marketing it, unless you used another one as a template. It was fascinating to watch.

Also the living space of eagles and owls is away. 😔 I understand that they want big fields for big Machines. And the fields are hard to plow. But i think there should be other solutions.
