Brings back memories of hauling spuds out of Washington State and Oregon and Taber, Alberta, back in the late 90's and 2000, to various McCain plants on the prairies, for Westcan Transport, in Super-B hopper trailers. They had a 13 year-old Chinese girl in Taber, loading us... she could get us within only a few kg's either way of our legal weight! A mean gal on the stinger!

I saw another planter video recently that used a smaller whole potato as seed. Interesting difference in the choice. You will get a lot more mileage out of the available resources. However, it appears a lot more handling is required and that cost money and time also. I do not know if different variety was involved but the seed planting and the land type was the same.

So when you use a whole potato that doesn’t need to be cut for seed, it is called a one drop and to get all of your seed that size it would have to be sorted out so it would actually cost more to get all one drops that you don’t have to cut versus getting this and cutting it yourself.

I buy bags of potatoes at the grocery store, and I often forget to thank the growers of these amazing spuds and how hard the laborer's work. As far as the laborers are concerned, they seem very serious about their job and appear dedicated to their work. I think that they should also be called by name, instead of "they". Excellent video though!

What's difference from whole potatoes? As far as I know, the one without cutting is more disease resistance than this ! ❤

There’s a chance that you can introduce disease when you cut them but we have to make our seed uniform size for the planter.

The number of eyes per piece changes the type of yield. Plants with little room will produce many more potatoes per acre, but they will be smaller on average. It is a similar effect with spacing pieces in the row, 18 inches for big late harvest baking potatoes down to 6 inches for early boiling potatoes, maybe even closer for specialty seed potato production. Planting one large potato with many eyes will produce many stems which are effectively separate plants bunched together. To get the average effective spacing there would need to be variable distance at planting time to give more room to the large many eyed seed potatoes and less for small ones with only one eye, and the yield would still not be as consistant as when using uniformly sized pieces (or sorted small singles).

This year we spaced them at 13 inches apart in the field. We usually go closer together but we couldn’t find enough seed this year so we spaced them a little further apart. Very interesting process. You said in another video, that only two of your trucks have wet kits. How do you run your beds on the other trucks?

Our other trucks have to be plugged into power. For planting we use a generator to power them.

I do propane deliveries, I get a full day of weird angles. I am kind of used to it. the most dangereous about my truck is that I am super top heavy and even 5% side level difference will tip it over.

The seed potato growers plant those until they get to the fourth generation, then we get those to plant.

What makes it a seed potato? How is it different than the ones I eat? I have planted plenty of store potatoes with great success I guess maybe that was before sprout-inhibitor which is the answer to my question

So potato are grown in generations. The ones we pull out of the ground and the ones in the grocery stores are the 5th generation but the ones we plant are the 4th generation. You can plant 5th generation potatoes but the more generations you go the quality goes down and the processors won’t take them.

Just found your channel. Ive only ever seen small scale potato farming so this large scale should b very interesting How many pounds (or tons) of seed potato do u plant. How much do u expect to havest for that lot (weight wise). Thx for the vid

Motorcycle chain lub is very good for your high speed chains and it doesn't attact dust or dirt, ,,it doesnt fly off. Try some and see ,youll never go back to just oil

They are different because they are a fourth generation potato versus what we pull out of the ground are fifth generation potatoes, and the more generations you go the more likely you are to have diseases so we don’t replant our own potatoes

So potatoes are grown in generations a seed potato is one generation newer than the ones you get in the grocery store. seed potatoes are fourth generation the store potatoes are fifth generation

You know, I’m really surprised that you guys don’t go to an auction to buy like a a medium size small crane and have it set up for swapping your beds out rather than using the loader. I’m in loader works but it looks like a little shady a little bit gonna be cool if you got a crane, a small crane medium whatever Just my thought,

Well yes and no. It is a potato yes. But it is a special potato. The potatoes you see in the store are a 5th generation potato but we can’t plant those. We plant 4th generation potatoes. The more generations you go through the more likely you are to get weird looking potatoes and diseases. 4th generation potatoes are also grown specifically for seed potatoes and are planted closer together so that they are smaller witch gives you more eyes per seed piece. And yes we are in Idaho.

Buen día, he mirado varios de tus videos, he mirado que también eres un todólogo, como comente en otro video, gracias a Dios me toco estar en casi todos los procesos de la Papa, en diferentes años claro esta, le he comentado a varios conocidos lo que hacia que me gustaba lo que hacia, ya que nunca me la pasaba haciendo lo mismo, me dicen, si te gustaba tanto, por que te no seguiste ahí, les digo, me salí por varias razones, una de tantas fue, por que yo hacia el trabajo y los lambiscones eran los que se llevaban los méritos, ya que el patrón nunca me miraba, una vez me mandaron al rancho a almacenar la papa en los subterráneos, en esa ocasión andaba ahí el Hermano del dueño de la planta donde trabajaba, el también era dueño de una planta donde freían papa, (RIP) los dos, lo chistoso que paso ocasión, fue que el hermano, le dijo a un muchacho que manejaba la tolva o dompe, has esto! y el le responde, no! a mi me pusieron a manejar la tolva y no hago nada mas que eso, le dijo lo miso al que manejaba el tractor, al que estacionaba los camiones, al que ponía las pipas, pero todos le daban la misma respuesta, a mi me pusieron a hacer esto, yo no hago mas que esto, así es que ni como decirles algo, ya que según ellos eran los únicos que sabían hacer eso, un día miro que andaba en el tractor, después le pegue un brinco a mover la tolva para moverla, un día le dije, con el poco Ingles que sabia, Disculpe! usted mira Películas!, -Casi no, Por que?, -Lo que pasa, es que hay una película que se llama Star Wars Episodio I, donde uno de los protagonistas , le salva la vida a un Extraterrestre y le dice, Eres tonto!, -Yo no soy tonto, Yo hablo, -Si! tu hablas, pero no por el echo de hablar, quiere decir que eres inteligente., Al Sr. como que se le quedo grabado, ya que varios de los que estaba trabajando ahí, sabían Ingles, pero no le hacían caso a lo que decía, al final se quedo otro muchacho, yo y las mujeres que limpiaban la papa y la mujer que estaba acomodando la papa, hacia casi la mayoría de cosas ya que me tardaba 5 minutos o menos en hacerlas, al otro muchacho le enseñe unas cosas que no se le dificultaran mucho, así es que como el hermano de mi patrón miro lo que hacia, creo que tuve que ver para que en el año siguiente me tocara cosechar con la Digger, la malo fue que cuando me salí, el ya tenia 4 mese que había fallecido, así es que la única persona que miro y valoro lo que hacia, ya no estaba, no trabajaba muy lejos de donde están, ya que estaba en Hermiston, Oregón, Tanto que contar, muy buenos videos, Saludos y buen día.
