I always buy extra, if someone is having a hard time, I can donate. Yes, I have extra storage space 😊. Last August, when the flooding was in Slovenia, I was able to donate a bunch of hygiene products to them, especially through the church.

I find it helpful to know when the trucks arrive to restock the store. One of my local stores is wiped out of produce and any sale items by Sunday afternoon. The Monday shelves are pretty empty. However I learned the truck comes on Tuesday. In general they restock sale items "on offer" throughout the advertised week. Our sales run Wednesday to Wednesday.

Really useful video full of great tips. I have 2 neighbours who, like myself, often have their shopping home delivered after ordering it online. Either due to disability, long working hours, lack of transport etc, everyone has their own reasons for shopping this way. We tend to shop at different supermarkets, so we've come up with the plan that whenever one of us is placing an online order for delivery we let the others know. They can then browse the online supermarket and see if they have any offers they want, and we let whichever neighbour know that we'd like it added to their order for ourselves. It works well, it means we can grab the offers from various supermarkets that we don't use often, and the person placing the order doesn't necessarily have to meet the minimum spend for delivery by themselves. Its a win/win! Obviously this only works if you've got trustworthy neighbours who will pay for the goods they are adding to the order! We always pay each other for the items before the order is placed👍

If you scan your loyalty card before you start the scanning process it will show the discount as each item is scanned rather than at the end. It seems much easier to detect any missed sale pricing that way.

Our Kroger here in the USA rolls out their weekly ad on Wednesday. Sometimes they put out deals if you shop on a Thursday/Friday. Plus they offer fuel points if you shop on a Friday. I tick off digital coupons I want yo use for that week. We also have Aldi but they don't offer digital coupons. They don't accept paper coupons either. Our Aldi prices are going up as well as our Kroger store.

I’m not the best planner but I just buy and use what’s on sale when I shop. Today I got some beef short ribs that were marked down 1/2 price so that’s dinner tonight (and lunch tomorrow). Our butcher section always has individual packages marked down at the end of the aisle and since meat is the most expensive part of our meal I try to save there.

Here in the US, our supermarkets always start the new sales on Wednesdays. We have savings cards but don't get cash back, per se...we do however sometimes get coupons off fuel, or future shops. One thing I did start last year, was using receipt apps. You scan your receipts, and collect "points". Once you have a certain number of points, you can trade them in for either gift cards, or money to your PayPal account. Using 2 different apps, I was able to receive a around $300 in gift cards last year! Thanks so much for the great video!!

Arizona USA. Within 1 mile of my house are 5 grocery stores and 2 different dollar stores. Only 2 grocery stores offer a card and digital coupons and none offer cash back. Walgreens and CVS have cards too. Kroger/Frys also send me paper coupons each month on products they know I buy. I am a big list maker and also keep a notebook with needed info. It is more difficult and time consuming now to shop but its well worth the effort knowing I'm doing the best I can and staying within my budget.

Loved the talk😊, look around, Oz uses store 💳 cards. I use a local website for fresh fruit 🍎 and vegetables 🥕. Carrots are 79 cents per kilogram in a local food barn and in the supermarkets 1.25 + per kilogram bag. A weekly catalogue and a pensioner discount day is always advertised, so I always purchase my spuds 🥔 and carrots at a good price. Yes, take a list and a meal 🥘 plan ✔️ Thank you Jane and Mike for a good video 😊

Hi Jane, I got a bit too far ahead with some Christmas food prep and decided to try freezing the Veggie Wellington mix, formed into a log shape double wrapped in cooking paper and then tin foil. Defrosted it completely. It kept its shape and handled well. Proceeded as per your recipe. Excellent. As you are on a bargain hunt week I have stocked up on some "on offer" jars of chestnuts and I will make this recipe and freeze the wellingtons ahead for easy Sunday lunches. Many thanks for your always entertaining content. I am heading for 80, also in France, so listening to you is like chatting with a friend over a coffee, cheers!

Great video! I love your methods, use many of them myself, and will adapt some of your suggestions to my situation and location. We do have room to stock up, and we will purchase enough of items to last until the next time we expect the item to be on sale. I use a black marker pen to date when I open items that last a while and write on the new container how long the previous container lasted to challenge myself to make the next one last longer if realistic. We keep an inventory of all food and household items along with notes as to how long one generally lasts so we know when to be looking for the next sale.

Here in the midwest US, Missouri, we do have store cards, but no cash back connected to them, darn it! We also live in the country, almost 25 miles from a grocery store. 😢 I do need to learn how to use the store cards, though, as I am looking at moving sometime in the next year. Also, planning a visit to friend's and family in a couple of different states and though they won't let me give them any money for staying with them (2-3 weeks each), they have agreed to let me buy them a few groceries. My next step will be to check out the grocery sites before I go and match up a list of their preferred foods and other store bought items with the store specials. As I am on a small fixed income, I have to be careful with my money, but I refuse to be a complete mooch! They all make quite a bit more than I do, but I am pretty independent and like to pay my own way...at least as much as possible... I also like to save money and hate waste, which is why I will be matching sales with their way of eating. I really appreciate this video as the only stores less than 25 miles away do not have store cards at all. I keep trying to tell my husband that we should try to go a few miles further once every month or two for stocking up and go to the closer stores the rest of the time...Again, thank you for all the information!

As a Costco member we get 2% back, and with their credit card we get an additional 2% back, and extended warranties on products. Our Meijer grocery store has an Mperks program that gives you a % of your purchase, but whoever knows what that is, it varies, and now those credits expire soon, which is terrible. I don't shop that often, so the credit expires. We are 35-45 minutes from them, and an hour from Costco. I shop sales, and stock up, but I only do it every 4-8 weeks, depending upon appointments in those areas. Costco sends us 2 checks annually, to use. One expires in 6 months, the other 3 months. It covers our membership cost and gives us more cash for things on our list to replenish.

I'm in Colorado in the US and I only have 2 grocery chains near me and neither are discount so the app is my main way of saving. (No cash back available) Sales for both start on Wednesday so if there is an incredible deal then I need to go on Wednesday because it will be gone. We do get fuel points off of gasoline that we utilize to the max available. Like you, I keep track on the app of sales and "digital deals". I have never seen any item at 80% off here - the best you can do is a "buy one, get one free"

Good video Jane. In the US here many have loyalty cards, 1st discount. But the deep discounts at my main store you have to click/scan in the App. I do not have good reception in the store so make sure at the register that that discount has gone through, 2X i have had it not and the checker took it off for me. This last time I was really checking, coffee had not been that low in 4 years, 65% off limit 4! It didn’t ring up right away, but came through at the end of ring up in a frenzy that i couldn't see, so again had to ask the checker to double check. Super nice women that informed me if i let her know at time of scanning she can check subtotal right then to make sure. I will do that in future.

Not everyone is tech savvy or have smartphones, so the app system can be unfair. In the UK, it's possible prices are being inflated so a deal looks better than it actually is. We only buy what we need, works for us. Prices, loyalty cards and apps can be very confusing 😕 Thanks Jane and Mike. Really admire where you live. It looks lovely.

You are right, these techniques are definitely not unique to France. I am fortunate to have three grocery store all very near each other so that, theoretically, I could shop once a week, hitting all the stores. But, one stats their sales on Wednesday, another on Friday and the third on Sunday. Drives me crazy. And sadly, they do not allow access to look at the following week's ads online.

The store card really makes a difference. Even if I barely have the time to study/compare the deals, tongo to the physical store, I can online shop, selecting deals on my usual products, and at the checkout there is always a 2x or 3x points coupon that can easily be selected even simultaneously, so to give me about tousand points for an admittedly large 300.- shop. Those points become actual spendable coupons at the end of the month, and at our last big shop (diaper stock-up included!) We saved 95.-!!!

Thank you Jane for sharing so many organized tips for getting the best buys for the $ or€ or£. We have two super markets here in this part of our province but also have two discount stores. I shop discount stores first for things on our lists but am very aware of what may be discounted at a drugstore chain or at the supermarket. It’s a game at finding what best suits our tastes and our budget and then working the paperwork week to week at getting the best deals. I am grateful for our online deals and info because it does make discounts hopping, easier than it used to be when you just had to take the trip to the store to see what might be “ on sale” that day or that week. I only have the LIDL app on my phone because that's were I shop. If supermarkets have offers then they are in one supermarket one week or month then another supermarket the next week or month. Aldi and Lidl are normally cheaper than the big 4 in the UK so when the papers do a cheapest supermarket article they normally exclude Aldi and Lidl when they do the cheapest but can include them in the overall cheapest, this is because they use branded products in the cheapest prices and not unbranded products or the stores own products.

I do a hack where I redeem $10 of points at the time as well so this way I always use my points and get them back by the next day. It's a win-win😍

I live in Washington State, US and our "loyalty" cards for grocery stores give us lower rates on some sale items and a lower cost on the grocery store brand gas station. Occasionally Fred Meyer (Kroeger) does give us a coupon by mail for a certain amount off of groceries but I don't know if it is tied to any card usage. They also have some items as "digital coupons" that you have either select on you computer at home or scan the bar code on your phone when you are in their app. They are a nuisance. I also know all the locations of the "discounted" food in the store.

I agree, Jane...you often need to get to the shops very early in order to partake of the 'deals'. Sometimes our local shops advertise them and sometimes not. It pays to learn the local cycles. We have no Aldi or Lidl where I live in the US and have only one small mom-and-pop grocer who offers clearance-type goods each week. It isn't more than five or six items but I don't mind that and like to give this local, private business my shopping dollars versus the giant grocery conglomerates. Hubby and I do have a subscription to the local warehouse store and make sure to recoup our subscription fee in savings each year. Just today we were able to use it to purchase an item for a home upgrade that we'll enjoy now and will increase the value of our home in the future when we or our children need to put it on the market.

I go though the website and specials and check the app for extra points or deals. It’s very easy to stay on budget and I can’t get tempted by an unnecessary or unneeded product. I have just done a pantry restock of 50 items for about $80 Australian and saved about $30, all specials and supermarket brands.😊

When u get a good deal I mark on the tins bottles etc. How much I have paid. Then when I use it I put the amount I have saved in a separate savings account. I then use that account to pay for extra deals when they are available.

In the past I have fallen into the trap of over buying on things that are non food like cleaning and toiletry items but these still deteriorate over time. I once opened a packet of dishwasher pods and found all I had was a ball of stuck together pods and a bag of liquid. Over time the pod coating had deteriorated and this had allowed the liquid to leak out. Liquids will separate, creams will dry up and become gritty so not only have they been unusable but it has been money down the drain. These days I tend to put the date I open an item which allows me to work out how long it has lasted so I can avoid becoming too over stocked.

Great advice as always thank you I need to get a better grip on my Sainsbury's card as they send extra points through the app but not working for me although by swiping my loyalty card I earned £25 over the year. Will now try to get my head round what I need to do 🙄 xx

Hey Jane, I am o glad I have just found your channel by chance as I used to follow you before. I was wondering whether you might be able to share some advice on people planning to return to France and live on their British pension. How was this for you p9st Brexit? I have a dual nationality which may affect things but wondering whether you have to return to the uk every so often to fulfill customs criteria. Maybe this could be something to explore and highlight in a future video. I am an expat too and have a property near Morlaix so not far from yours. Any chance to address this subject in a future video?

Dual nationality with France or another EU country? If not, you’ll need 1300€ each per month in pension. We never have to return to the UK as we has residency visas here. All your questions can be answered by the France.gouv website for immigration.

Thank you Jane this was excellentl. Have you ever kept a price book? I did years ago after reading the Tightwad Gazette, but found it was a bit time consuming.

Thank you Jane and Mike for another very informative video. I have a question about 10% from your grocery budget in buying pantry items. If you have leftover funds (from€40) do you carry on for next month? Best wishes!

Hello Jane! I have a quick question regarding the Cash Back program on your grocery store loyalty cards. Must you use the cash back offer within a certain time? Or could you accumulate your cash back over time and use it for your Christmas holiday specialty foods? Thanks!

Some have to be used within a year, some roll over. Plenty of us just build up the cash then spend it.
