With ryokan hotels and onsen baths closed, we decided to dust off our camping gear and go bikepacking! Join us as we explore some of my favorite parts of central Japan on this three-day adventure, full of amazing climbs, blissful descents, and endless conbini stops.
Don't forget to check out Rob's youtube channel! ➭ / @rindorob
When I finished editing, it was announced that ryokan hotels are re-opening in our region, with many virus-prevention measures in place. so, we decided to ride to Tochigi prefecture the following week to explore all the amazing culture and natural beauty of the region, while staying in a Japanese ryokan. Check it out here! ➭ • bikepacking in rice fi...

You can call me Moe - I currently live and ride in Gunma, Japan. My goal is to get more humans on bikes to explore the Japanese countryside. In particular, it's my passion to encourage more women and girls to go out and ride. Whether you're on a mamachari, a cruiser bike, or a road bike, I think cycling is an amazing way to experience the world - healthy for our bodies and the earth. Plus, it's totally fun :)
I want to inspire international travelers to visit hidden roads, underrated restaurants, and inaka towns when Japan's borders open again. Through my videos, I hope that I'll be able to highlight these off-the-beaten-path places and put them on the map for bike adventurers who visit Japan. If you want to partner with me on this goal, or just wanna go on a ride together, please don't hesitate to DM me on instagram - @moe.cycling

Great video with excellent footage and nice music to relax with. I have skied and hiked in Nagano and will be bringing my touring bike when things open up. What do you use to navigate? Is RWGPS common or Komoot? Looks like navigation can get interesting as does hiking there too. I am also curious about the %grades you find in Japan? Don’t mind the climb, just thinking about gearing. Have fun!
@moecycling
@moecycling 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Dave - great to hear that you have plans to ride in Japan next time. I usually use Strava heatmaps, Garmin/Wahoo and Google Maps for routing. And just a little biased opinion - Nagano has bigger mountains & better snow, but when it comes to awesome quiet roads for cycling, you can't skip Gunma! My partner writes blog posts on many of our routes - hope it's helpful as you're planning your trip - biketourjapan.com/blog/ Typical climbs are in the 8-10% range but some of the tougher segments can avg up to 15%. I go with an 11-34 cassette - much better to spin than grind up the climbs!

All the shots you took of the scenery were amazing and has really made me want to go on an adventure of my own! I have been thinking of doing something similar to this in Japan for a while now, but are there any camping restrictions that I have to look out for when choosing a place to spend the night? Can you only pitch up tents on campsites or can you just set them up in most places in the wilderness?
@moecycling
@moecycling 2 жыл бұрын
Campsites are the safe way to go, though I don't really like campsites in Japan - they tend to be crowded with cars (esp weekends) and not cheap. For just a little more money, you could stay at a lodge or minshuku. Wild camp is possible, depending on where you choose to go, just be respectful of the space. I also recommend staying at least a few nights at a nice ryokan in the countryside - it's will cost more, but worth it for a nice onsen soak and kaiseki meal!

Thank you for sharing! This video is awesome! I am planning a bikepacking to Izu Peninsula. I don't know the camping rules in Japan. How did you find campsites? Will I need to book early? Or can I just find a random place to set up my tent?
@moecycling
@moecycling 4 жыл бұрын
hi Kun - thanks for watching/subscribing! There are campsites of all sorts: paid, free, wild. Paid camp spots are nice because you generally have amenities (shower, electricity, place to cook, etc) but can be similar price as getting a cheap hotel. Free campsites exist, but are a bit rare and usually in famous, well-known areas. If you choose to camp wild, be respectful of the space and make sure you set up at dawn and leave at dusk. If you speak some Japanese, you can also ask locals what they might recommend. I have never camped in Izu area so unfortunately I can't give more details about about camping in that area. I recommend joining a fb group called "Japan Cycling Navigator" as they have a lot of good info on camping and bike touring. enjoy!
