We re-install the isinglass on the Hatteras Yacht, then connect our heaters. Afterwards, we celebrate our 33rd Wedding Anniversary / Halloween with wine and song!
We discuss why it is important to use 220 volt space heaters instead of the normal 110 volt heaters.
Thanks for watching. If you enjoy our videos please subscribe. If you have any questions just let us know. We answer all comments.

Happy anniversary to both of you. I'd love how you come up with solutions for issues that pop up. Just like with the 220 heater I never would have thought about tapping the switches. That was absolutely genius. I didn't even know about the amp draws from 220 and 110. Here's a little tip that I have for you On your isinglass. Mothers makes a product that is meant to be used with their Powerball. It's a plastic conditioner and cleaner. After I was done everybody at the marina stopped and looked at our boat. They could not believe how good it actually turned out. The only thing I can say for doing it right is just to read the instructions. I know as a man we're not supposed to read instructions. Just do what I do take the instructions in the bathroom and as you're walking to it start complaining there's nothing to read around here. -) I'm really impressed that you don't winterize in the Philly. Trust me I know how cold it gets up there. Here in Annapolis we will sometimes get some very cold temperatures but it doesn't stick around like it used to. I'm surprised that your marina allows you to have heaters plugged up over the winter. I can't remember if you guys are living on your boat now. I follow a lot of different boaters but by far you too are my favorite. You don't use T&A to get people to watch your videos. My wife will tell you first hand that kind of nonsense pushes me away. I had subscribed to a Harley magazine for years and they slowly starting moving intowards haven't asked naked women sitting on bikes. So I finally after all those years canceled my membership. I respect someone more on content of a subject than trying to distract you since they can not add to the subject. I cannot wait to see your Annapolis video. Thank you for another great video and for giving some needed knowledge out there. Again happy anniversary, you too still seem like honeymooners.

Once in a while I have a good idea! 😁 I got lucky with having 220v at the switches. Lyn has been using 210 on the isinglass, which someone recommended to her. I tell her about Mothers. We use their wax and like it. We live on the boat 3-4 days per week in the winter. The marina does not have a problem with our heaters. In any case, they are very safe. Industrial type enclosures with thermal cutoff switches and anti-tip switches. We agree about the T&A. We do not try to bait people with stuff like that. If it fits the topic, or the situation, we are not shy about it, but it is not what we are about. Although I am sometimes envious when I see another boat channel getting a million views on a crappy video because they put a bikini shot in the thumbnail. It is an easy way to grow viewership. On the upside, our viewers are the type of people we like to hang out with.

Ok Guys here are a few tips to survive on a boat through the winter. Since you are not insulating your water lines make sure to turn off the water when you leave. If you want to have running water you have to insulate the water line from the dock to the boat. If you are staying at Pier 5 there water lines have heat lines around the water supply lines. My next tip is to get wall mounted electric heaters that have a thermostat on them they are a lot safer than space heaters. Also check your power lines often for burnt tips. I've seen to many boats catch fire because the lines over heated even in the dead of winter. Another tip is to have a dehumidifier that will help to keep the condensation down on the boat. And my last and least favorite is putting plastic on the outside of the windows that will also help with the condensation. So just a few tips of living on a boat at Pier 5 for 18 years. Stay warm and safe.
@tryingnottosink9107
@tryingnottosink9107 3 жыл бұрын
We use the blue heated water lines when we are at Pier 5. So far so good. The heaters we use are not really typical space heaters, they are more commercial, with thermal switches and tip-over switches. However, we do secure them to the walls, although we did not show that in the video. They came with mounting brackets. We have used them for a couple years now and they work well. I know what you mean about the burnt tips. Pier 5 is terrible for electric. We have replace burnt plus twice. On the ends of our lines and on their pedestals. As well as defective breakers. They do not take care of anything there. You are on your own. The dehumidifier is a good idea. Thanks for the tips and thanks for watching!

I love your Channel and look forward to notifications of your posting of a new video. This video does not disappoint. I hope you had a great Halloween. It looks like everyone was enjoying themselves. I’m not a safety expert, yet from my limited knowledge about fire safety, it appears that use of space heaters that are left unattended, or perhaps while sleeping could be considered a fire hazard. Just thought I’d share my thoughts to make sure you’ve considered this potential risk. Anyway, just a quick FYI. I hope you have a great Winter season in the waters off of Philadelphia...Ed
@jaquigreenlees
@jaquigreenlees 3 жыл бұрын
Sadly, any heat source is a fire risk other than the block heaters, stove and grill. Although the last 2 are not completely risk free just a calculable risk. They can mitigate the space heater risk with fire resistant material below and temperature setting. as long as the space heater shuts down regularly as the are is at temperature they cool off and reduce the risk. Most live aboard boaters also simply layer up even inside the cabin since it is hard to keep a boat at a truly comfortable temperature.
@tryingnottosink9107
@tryingnottosink9107 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the input. The heaters we use are more like commercial heaters than standard space heaters. They have thermal cutoff switches and switches that turn them off if they are not level. They also have a great deal of metal casing around them. So we feel very safe. Nothing is risk free. Even our land house uses heating elements when the weather is too cold for the heat pumps. The other choices was to install diesel heaters, but that carries it's own risk as well. And although we did not show it in the video, since we are not actually using the heaters right now I it is not cold enough) the salon heater usually sits on the hardwood floor, not the carpet and the hallway heater sits on ceramic tile.

I wonder if they are making a marine application heatpump yet that works as well as the new mini splits, mine is rated to -5 F (This will be my first winter with it and we've already been down to the low 20's and it supprised me at how hot it was blowing) how ever I've been seeing some that are rated all the way down to -24f with videos showing them blowing hot at -27 here on youtube.

That would be nice. Does yours have backup heating elements? It is hard to image it being that efficient.

@@OG_Gamers_Live I tried getting a retro fit for my 40ton Cruisairs but they did not make a simple blower refit. It would require me to replace the entire air exchange. Since it's already 15 years old, I will wait. Do you know who has a blower with an electric heating element that could be retrofit?

Those "vents" arent they just a big hole for water to enter the engine room?

Sort of. They are "S" shaped and three feet off the water line. Water can get in, but it is difficult.

While you're somewhat correct with wattages needed to heat that much space, you slightly messed up on the 120 volt portion. If you connect all the 120 volt units on one circuit coming form the pedestal (and I know your "floating home" uses 120/220 volts----essentially two 120 volt circuits, then.....yes you probably were using 70 amps. Had you found a way to balance the load----halve the heat units on one circuit and half on the other, you would have been fine. By switching to the 220 volt heaters, and using both the circuits from the pedestal, you eliminated the guesswork. Just a long explanation on how you made it more "fool proof"

Thanks for the info. I am not much of an electrician but I knew it would work. Fortunately, we have Amp Gauges for both lines. It can be a bit tricky balancing use of 80 Amps, even with these heaters Lyn likes to cook, and often has the oven and stove running at the same time.

@@stelioshondrocolos1869 Why would you say that ? The heaters have "safe" enclosures, cords are in good shape, circuits are wired properly, and there are circuit breakers protecting for overloads. Now....if you want to get really picky----the circuit breakers or receptacles should be of the arc-fault type. But in my observations of the videos, that'd be really way over the top.
