The ignition of the worlds largest annual bonfire - made exclusively by the use of the hands of youth between 12-23 years of age. The video shows 6 of the bonfire-builders freeclimbing the bonfire to ignite it. The fire is an annual tradition to celebrate midsummer and St. John, and the only one of its kind still alive today. The bonfire is located in Ålesund, Norway on a small artificial island outside Slinningen, an outer district of Ålesund. In 2015 it was measured to 34m, and the bonfires are built 100% with only wooden pallets. In the year of 2016 the bonfire measured 47.396m tall and broke the world record for world's tallest bonfire, approved by Guinness: www.guinnesswor...

This is NOT the highest bonfire in the world. This video is from 2015, we set the world record in 2016. There are probably a lot more videos of 2016 around youtube if you search for them! :)

The chance of making fatal errors when climbing is pretty much the same as to fall when climbing a ladder, probably less because the ladder actually can tip over. As you can see in the video, you maintain three points of contact when climbing with your legs and arms, and even so the point of contact is on the inside of the pallets where it's literally impossible that anything comes loose. This is because of the enormous weight on the pallets which keeps everything in place. Every pallet is evaluated before being sent to the top. We've built tall bonfires like this since 1964, so obviously there has been developed a lot of techniques for every task we have to do. :)

Our bonfire is built for height, not volume. In 2016 the bonfire measured 47.396m high and broke the world record. The volume was nowhere close to Scheveningen with about 2,500m3, but that's because of the way we use the material to sustain the height.
