I have a house in Mississippi. Thinking about doing this. We get a lot of rain so I would probably engineer in an overflow valve to prevent overtopping and drain it away. Also use pressure treated wood for my box. Put in under some type of Pergola with a way to create an enclosure with a bench. Then I could put a mesh screen over the top to keep out all of the leaves and acorns out. Great inspiration here.

I'd imagine that you will get some more hits as this seems to be a new and cool thing that do. I've recently seen a few articles on it so I'm sure the word is out. Funny about 25 years ago we used a stock tank like that at my brother's place. Without all the fancy bells and whistles (filter, heater)

Love it. We did an inground stock tank pool a couple of years ago. One thing that happened was how slick the bottom was stepping in the pool at 18" +. My leg went out from under me! We bought a step from a medical supplier with 2 arms for stability while getting in and out. I actually trenched the plumbing so the pool pump was above ground and near where the heater is going. I like the idea of the drain sleeve.

@@ditchingnormal1344 I used 1 1/4 inch pvc and flexible hot tub hose to connect to the pool (2 returns, one intake... and intake uses a skimmer). very much like actual in-ground pools. Then ran the intex hoses from the ground to the box where the pump is stored.

@@73Libra Ive been trying to research this. Having the stock tank pull buried and and all hoses buried (ran through some sch 40 or some sort of housing) and then returning to the surface in a discrete location so everything is away from the pool. I want to run lines for both pool and hot water. Is there a max distance of hose that these pumps can handle? Ive never had a pool or hot tube but all the tools and machinery to put one in! LOL

@@tjbeaverson8415 I am sure there is...I looked a long time ago and there is an actual formula. I did not use it BTW. Mine is about 15 feet away. The further out, you will need more HP to get the water moving. I have a small intex pump and it works just fine. One note though...If it loses prime, it can be challenging to get it back. I can only assume that is because of the distance and the fact the pump is aboue the piping. Gravity working against me.

@ditchingnormal1344

Hi! So we have a solar cover that easily keeps the pool warm during the summer months. We only use the heater for spring and fall. Even then, we usually only need to run it for about an hour or so to get it up to the mid 80's which is where we like it. I think we refilled the propane tank 3 times last year, which totalled about $35. I'm not exactly sure how far away the pump and heater can be. We use the hoses that came with our pool pump and never tested it to go farther than that. Our heater setup is about 15ft away and works great. I would just do some testing before putting anything permanent in place. Good luck!

@ditchingnormal1344
@ditchingnormal1344 Жыл бұрын
Hi! We have really dry soil here and very little moisture in the summer so we just backfilled with dirt. You definitely have the right idea to backfill with something to help with drainage though if you have moist soil/clay. If you are putting your pump underground as well you may want to consider a sump pump to make sure it doesn't flood. Obviously all depends on how much water you get. Best of luck!

@ditchingnormal1344
@ditchingnormal1344 3 жыл бұрын
the heating unit we use heats about 10 degrees an hour. That should still apply to the cold months. The only issue is that it will cool off a lot quicker when it's cold outside and you may need to constantly run the heater to maintain a high temperature. ...same goes for a regular hot tub in winter though. Best of luck with your project!

Hello, I was wondering if the stock pool rusts or needs to be replaced can it be removed and replaced? Do you need a permit for this? I live in HOA is this considered permanent?
@ditchingnormal1344
@ditchingnormal1344 Жыл бұрын
Hi! The only rust spots we had in our pool were due to chlorine tablets being dropped directly in the pool, on accident, and not in the floaty it's supposed to be in. Direct contact with chlorine caused the spots. Other than that, we haven't had any rust. As far as the permit and HOA question goes, I don't know. Hopefully your HOA managers can help answer that. We use the pump connected to our heater to drain the pool. We simply disconnect it from the heater and set that side of the hose where we want to drain. You could also use your main pool pump to drain it. Just disconnect the hoses from the pool connections, put one hose inside the pool and the other outside. We definitely never let it flood the pump box. Best of luck!

Do you have any regrets building your stock tank pool in the ground? like having to drain / empty it? cleaning, algae problems, etc.? Can't make up my mind above or in-ground! Thanks

No regrets so far. Winterizing would be easier with an above ground though as you could just drain it and roll it in the garage or something vs having to tarp. Good luck!

@ditchingnormal1344
@ditchingnormal1344 3 жыл бұрын
Hey! It was just about $1k after including the tankless water heater and pavers. A simpler setup with just the tank and pool pump would cost about half that though.

@ditchingnormal1344
@ditchingnormal1344 3 жыл бұрын
The heater raises the temp about 10 degrees an hour. We also have a solar cover to supplement the heater so we only ended up refilling our propane tank 3 times this year while keeping the temp of our pool about 85 degrees most days. Good luck with your project!

I'm about to do a similar setup with mine. How do you keep water out of your underground pump box?
@ditchingnormal1344
@ditchingnormal1344 4 жыл бұрын
Hi! Sprinkler water and rain water does get in there a bit but evaporates and/or soaks into the soil quickly. I would just recommend putting your pump on top of a paver or two to create a 1 to 2 inch drainage basin below your pump. Has worked well for us. For any major extended rain storms we just tarp our entire pool and pump box. So far so good!

@ditchingnormal1344
@ditchingnormal1344 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for checking it out! As far as the propane tank question goes, it's a little tricky to give an exact answer as it depends on how hot you're wanting to keep your pool. I can say that our setup typically raises the temperature by 10 degrees an hour and a 20lb propane tank lasts about 18-20 hrs. Not bad for the $12 it costs to fill it up! Good luck!

Thanks! We use the smaller pump that carries the water to the water heater to drain the pool. Yes it is but you would need a specific pump system that is build for handling the salt. The pump we use and is linked in the description of the video is not meant to handle salt. Why a propane heater over am electric one?
@ditchingnormal1344
@ditchingnormal1344 4 жыл бұрын
Hi! More than anything it just comes down to your personal preference. The examples we saw of electric heat being used with stock tank pools didn't make us feel super comfortable that there wouldn't be a risk of electric shock. We chose propane so we wouldn't have to worry about whether or not it was safe to be in the pool while it was being heated. ...which it is really nice to sit right by the heater as it's pumping out hot water :) Thanks for watching!
