When I lived in an apartment, I had no where to store my kayaks (which I took to the lake nearby about 2x a month for 7-8 months of the year. So, I had a unit. Now, I just sold my home and am living with family temporarily. So, I need a place for my things. So, there are valid reasons. Most people don't have them though, haha.

mickey lorenzio...oh hunni, I practice minimalism to the extreme so I can afford to have my pets! They heal my soul & make me feel needed. I listen to the minimalist videos to gain knowledge (hopefully) on how to cut corners even more! ie. I don't heat my whole house in the Winter or cool it in the Summer. I line dry my cloths. I no longer have a vehicle, but will get one when I can. I don't buy magazines, books, cable TV. I don't buy anything new, clothing, furniture or anything else I can buy used. I cut my own hair, have never had artificial finger nails. I even changed my own carburetor on my mower last Summer, mow my own lawn, do my own house repairs, can do my own electrical wiring. Enough...I think you get the point. I'm 76 years old, a woman & still going strong (for now)! tks 4 hearing what I have to say! LOL Judie to quote from below "my rich journey" ALSO!

Not sure if anyone commented on saving money by not having pets. I’m an animal lover and I’ve had dogs but they can get expensive, especially if you like to travel since you have to arrange a pet sitter or boarding for them. Now I’ll go to a dog park to watch dogs or ask dog owners in the park if I can say hello to their pets and I feed treats to the outdoor cats adopted by my condominium complex and donate to my local no kill animal shelter. Not the same love as having a pet of my own but way cheaper and easier to travel.

Diane Shigley...pets certainly are a huge expense. Sadly it costs more to take a pet to the Dr. than it does me! Medications the vet gives your/my pets costs way more than they should. My vet charged me $20. for 11 pills & Wal*Mart sold me 100 pills (same med) for $11.00. All you need is a prescript from a vet! Wal*Mart doesn't have all pet meds, but they do have some & clearly you can see it is worth checking into. I don't have money (at all), but every pet I have had has been so worth the money & sacrifice. I wouldn't give up one pet for traveling anyplace, especially to another Country. My pets love me unconditionally, always & I feel nothing but discomfort & stress when I travel. There is nothing I can't see safely & comfortably from my home on KZfaq with my pets at my side! I understand lots of people feel the way you do & you are 100% right, but it just all depends on what you enjoy most. If I lived by you I would take care of your pet for free so you could travel & have both! IF a person is not 100% crazy about & into animals, don't get one, they take as much care & responsibility as a child does (or should if you care for them properly). All of life isn't about saving money on everything, but about spending enough (if need be) to enjoy life too! I know you know that because you enjoy travel. I cut corners (financially) in other ways to be able to afford pets, probably in ways you wouldn't or couldn't. Isn't it wonderful we have choices? LOL & thanks for your insight (which is so true) Judie

The folks that work in the tool lending library are also very knowledge when it comes to DIY projects. They helped me solve plumbing, woodworking, etc, problems. If your city doesn't have a tool lending library, the neighboring city might, and they usually allow residents of nearby cities to check out tools.

A side note on the rental car insurance info..While it is true that most credit cards and car insurance plans will cover damage to the vehicle in a crash or vandalism. They will not cover LOSS of USE. Loss of use the the amount of money the rental car company losses while the vehicle is being repaired or replaced.This can add up quickly if the damage to the vehicle is fixable but significant and spends a lot of time in the repair process. If you did not opt for the portion of the insurance that covers loss of use you will be responsible for paying it. When you are at the counter you can specify that you want loss of use covered but have comp and collision thru your credit card or insurance .
@OurRichJourney
@OurRichJourney 5 жыл бұрын
Great point. Credit cards definitely have different plans when it comes to coverage for rental cars. Best to make sure you understand your credit card coverage before you need it. It would be terrible to think you had a certain amount of coverage, find out you need it, and then later find out that your credit card doesn't cover it.:(
@Whatsyourproblem99
@Whatsyourproblem99 4 жыл бұрын
You can usually negotiate the loss of use amount to $0. Most companies highly overestimate how much they’re losing and in fact the amounts are pretty arbitrary. Your insurance carrier will also usually negotiate this amount for you as well. (Ex-insurance adjuster)

I have a comment regarding used cars. I've seen several of my friends/family members go through used cars too frequently (because of problems with it) and in the end, buying a new car can be less expensive in some cases. My friend has gone through 5 used cars (costing $5-7K each) in less than 7 yrs. I've had the same car for 7 years but it was a New purchase (21K)and we paid it off in 4yrs with a low interest rate. Buying a new car isn't always a bad idea especially when you plan on keeping it for as long as you can.

I always bought used cars, but I bought my first new car at age 53. There are advantages and disadvantages to each. With a new car, you know what your expenses will be. You have a fixed payment, scheduled maintenance, and that's it. With my last used car, I spent over $6000 on it in the last 2 years I had it replacing tires, emergency brake, a/c compressor, etc. My new car is better on gas, more comfortable and convenient because it is current technology, and costs less to insure because it has the latest safety features. As long as you don't buy a luxury vehicle, buying new isn't always a bad idea.
