"Ellie" is a bearded dragon, rehomed to us by somebody that received her from a friend. She's the sickest dragon we've seen, and was nearly unresponsive when we took her out of the box. Over the past few weeks, daily treatment has been done to help her the best we can. Today, I go over the processes we used to get Ellie much happier and healthier! She's not perfect yet, but is certainly not too far from it :)

Also I feel like him saying fecals are a waste of time and money just because the animal is older is unacceptable. They can provide so much more information than just if an animal has parasites or not. You can also see if there are gut micro flora (good bacteria that live in your gut) imbalances caused from nutritional issues. Also pets can get parasites from all sorts of things and in a case where the history is shady he shouldn’t just be dismissing that because who knows where these people got the very little food they gave this poor baby:/ he has such a big platform for him to be spreading distrust of veterinarians is hurtful. MOST vets are people who have dedicated there lives to helping animals.

Katie Kane the clinic I worked at did a fecal float and a fecal direct which looks at bacteria under the microscope for only $35 for both so it depends on the clinic. I still think it provides a lot of useful information to diagnose or rule out any health issues.

Pet stores shouldn’t be allowed to sell certain pets because sometimes staff members don’t know what the hell they are doing and are just there for a paycheck. When I was younger taking advice from a pet store staff killed my turtle years ago! Not to say this is everywhere I’ve been to pet stores where they are actually knowledgeable about the animals and advised against buying an iguana.

Thank you so much for taking her and helping her. When my sister and I took Ellie in she was pretty weak, like when you received her. I'm pretty sure she was an unresearched purchase in her previous family. I think they got her because "my daughter wanted a beardie so we got a beardie" and that was that, but no one took care of her. In fact, the only reason we knew Ellie was a girl was because I searched up how to sex beardies on google and hoped I was right (Since I've never done it) She had started to perk up after we fed her, she was actually quite energetic. She would go crazy when she saw the feeding chopsticks, my sister said Ellie was actually our best eater. (We have another beardie, and he is doing great!) And we always put calcium on her food, so that's probably why she doesn't have MBD. Then she started to relapse again, and it was just out of our hands. She would go to the darkest corner and lay there for hours. I tried to bathe her and then force her into the light, but she quickly retreated back to the corner. No vets around us looked at beardies, so we went online to find some powder to help her pass potential parasites. (Sense we really had no idea what was wrong) At that point, we had to force food down her throat. Nothing was changing and we knew she was beyond our help. I cannot truly express how much this means to us. Despite everything, I think she's really lucky to be saved by you guys. I'm truly excited to see how her future goes, and I'm even more pumped seeing all these comments wanting this sweetheart! Again, thank you guys so much for everything.

@@spuilloh2637 Its actually easier to produce and provide for insects. Sure it takes a lot of em. But it would be a pretty good alternative to most things if we farmed em in mass. Atm it takes way more room, resources and time to produce the same amount of calories in the form of current livestock than it would with insects. If you wanna go the route of vegetarian or vegan that's fine. Just un realistic route with our current population.

I have been to vets where there has been blood or vomit smeared at the floor in front of their pay counter (where you inevitable have to walk with your dog). Or where there was blood or poop smeared or skin flakes with ripped out hair (might have skin fungus attached) still on the examination table and the vets told me to sit my pet on the table (which I of course refused). This has happened in multiple occasions. And when I mentioned I wanted them to clean that first, they rolled their eyes, got annoyed or angry.

And "fun fact" this is also like this with doctors (like for human). I just had a testing last week where I had to get a nose clamp on to only be able to breathe through my mouth. This nose clamp was made of rubber and had ridges. In these ridges there was brown crusts of skin flakes, dirt, skin fat or what not, because it was never cleaned. I could continue this, from doctors not wiping off nostril examination tools leading to infection one with green clumpy mucus disease, to hospitals where there is poop smeared on the walls and on the carts of the nurses leading to infections with MRSA. And I live in a high developed country in Europe. You will find crappy business everywhere.

I think it's safe to say your vets' have been giving you "generic reptile antibiotic" and just trusting that everything else will clear up on it's own once infections are treated / with the chance of infection causing complications in healing being significantly lowered. Not a necessarily a bad approach dependent on situation, but def sketchy if they aren't explaining "in this instance all we can do is treat/prevent bacterial infection and wait it out" when they go with that method. It's like a doctor prescribing penicillin every time you get sick or break a bone or have an upset stomach, provided you don't have a penicillin allergy. yeah, you significantly decrease the chance of dying from bacterial infection, but that's not always what we should be concerned about.

How incredible is it how a couple weeks of TLC made such a HUGE difference with miss Ellie! We had a similar situation with an Iguana who was kept in an all glass vivarium (if you could even call it that) with little to no air flow and absolutely no temperature control in the front of a bar, outside, being fed MAYBE once or twice every month. I had recieved a message from a friend asking if me and my husband wanted an Iguana. I was very iffy at first because I had little experience with Iguanas, however when he had explained the situation, my husband and I drove 3 hours to go pick up Coco. Coco was a five year old Iguana that was just over 3 feet from nose to tail. He actually was at the house next to the bar because the owner (of the bar) had asked the man next door to watch him while the bar underwent construction. When the bar opened back up when construction was complete, they never took Coco back (thankfully). The family we recieved him from had had him for just about a month before we were contacted. They had no experience with reptiles whatsoever but they did their best to research what exactly Coco needed. Unfortunately, we had coco for exactly a month before we were forced to euthanize him. We had taken him into the vet immediately after getting him and he was prescribed antibiotics (surprise! Tazicef) as well as some calcium/vitamin supplements. He had a toe that was deformed and a bit curly, and fearing the worst, they kept him under observation for a few days before sending us home with him with a strict diet and husbandry routine. He was doing well! His spines that were once gray and floppy were starting to look healthier and he was even getting more color on him! He was even finally warming up to us as much as cuddling with me while watching movies without trying to whip me with his tail before we noticed one morning that he was having trouble walking. We wrapped him up in some towels and blankets (mid january) and headed straight to the emergency exotic vet about an hour away. We gave them all the details of his enclosure, basking temperature, if he was eating/drinking, how often we would soak him, and what food/supplements he was taking. They informed us that he had endured poor conditions for far too long and that he had developed Metabolic Bone Disease. They told us that the best option for him would be to put him down. I was a wreck when this happened because I was starting to think he would pull through and live a healthy, long lizard life. I thought I was doing something wrong even with the vet reassuring me that we were doing everything right. Im sure there were things we could have done differently and that hurts me to this day, 2 years later. As much as I'm not a fan of Iguanas, I loved my Coco, and wouldn't trade my time with him for the world. It's just a shame that people (or businesses in our case) exist that could ever put a creature into a situation where the odds are against them. Bless you and everyone at Emerald Scales for being such wonderful people. We did file a report with the local (to the bar) police station and management was changed shortly after. We aren't sure if it was because of Coco, and nobody (to our knowledge) was charged with animal abuse/neglect.

Hello Alex, I’m the previous owner of Ellie. I can’t thank you enough. I loved and love Ellie so much, and seeing her already getting back to your old self brings me to tears. I loved her so much, and I knew it was time when I brought her outside with me one day, and she could barely move. I couldn’t stop crying, and I believed it was all my fault. It likely was. I am a senior in highschool and my dad is deployed, and my mother and I don’t have much money, and there were no vets around that could help. I have another Beardie as well who is happy and healthy, and I just couldn’t figure out why, and I knew if I couldn’t provide for her, I needed someone else who could. And I have watched your channel for so long, and after trying different powders, and different home remedies for different things. I knew there was nothing else I could do. Thank you Alex, with all my heart. Thank you for helping my dear Ellie. Seeing her happy makes me cry tears of joy. Thank you!!!!!!!!

And, to anyone interested, I did NOT neglect Ellie. I did keep her in a 20 gallon which she came in, as when I got her, she was very sick and I didn’t want to change scenery, and I simply wanted to focus on her and getting her better. She did become lively and happy, but soon again became bad. And that is when I sent to you Alex. I just don’t wanna be attacked, but again. Thank you so much

Aurora Surrealis well the vet and him both think it’s a RI so systemic antibiotic is what is prescribed. It’s unfortunate that exotic veterinary science isn’t that advanced as for domesticated cats/dogs or humans. Plus who can afford to test for 1000 things? I understand his wariness of going to the vet at this point. He has much more experience with reps daily than the vet and I believe the vet is throwing options out there for him with the testing. I believe he has enough combined experience along with his partners to know when they need to take an animal.

Thank you for making this vid! I recently took in a couple of sick beardies, and one of them just wouldn't eat anything. I got a powder mix and tried syringe feeding that, but he still didn't look good, almost never moved, and wouldn't eat on his own. The vet didn't recommend (or prescribe) anything, and I was starting to think he was just too far gone. After watching this video, I made a dragon-friendly smoothie and have been syringe feeding him that for a few days... he's now eating insect feeders and greens on his own, is gaining weight and is active and alert! We've recently made some other changes too, but this video definitely helped save his life. Thank you! :)

Alex, keep n mind that Dr's & vets will often do tests or prescribe just to satisfy the human. Sadly, these professionals have run n2 people that want SOMETHING so they do whatever seems to fit the situation even when they may think it's not completely necessary. They do this sometimes as well to simply justify the cost of the office visit when there really isn't anything they can do. Always tell the vet that u don't want them to do something just to make YOU happy. Tell them u only want their honest opinion even if it's just 'Theres really nothing I can do & keep doing what ur doing' I also think u r knowledgeable enuf at this point to refrain from running staight to the vet. Save that for when u have tried everything u know & the animal is still failing but u believe it still has a chance.

I ended up having to pry her mouth open and pop pre-packaged pellets in her mouth til she was strong enough to eat superworms....she also wouldn't eat greens for the longest time. Ive had her over a year now and she's doing great though.....hope your girl pulls through too!

You seem like the person that comes to us, wants answers, but doesn't want to pay for any of the testing that tells us what's going on or complains about everything we do. You have to cover ALL bases within reason when diagnosing an animal. They can't talk and we aren't wizard mind readers. Calm down boi. XD Also, we HAVE to mark up prices of things. Human doctors mark things up 4x more. Honestly, I used to think the same as you, but working in the veterinary field now I understand. Unfortunately animals cost money long term.

Used to feel the same about Baytril myself... all our various sick, possibly sick, lots of different species and lots of different medical issues- everyone gets Baytril! Parrot, rabbit, mouse, guniapig hamsters, other birds, everyone gets the same! Which you can buy online for very little, and it certainly does feel frustrating to pay a vet $50 to look at and weight my animal and prescribe me Baytril- I did more checks for my parrot than my vet did. Not had the best experience of most vets either, but finally found a good one- unfortunately all most vets know about is cats and dogs, because that’s all they see day after day. Anything like a parrot or reptile is an “exotic species” and the chance is high if you have experience that you know more about the animal than the vet. But don’t give up Alex, I finally found a good vet after a dozen useless ones, and it does feel good to be able to have a second opinion and support from someone who actually knows what they’re talking about. You should try calling different places with a “problem” (maybe something you’ve dealt with in the past) and see how they respond, have a chat with the vet over the phone and get a feel for them before you go and make and appointment- that way you can try to “vet” the vet without paying a pointless charge to see what basic knowledge they might have and how they suggest handling your hypothetical situation. Glad to see this Beardie is doing better- great video, and hope you’re feeling better now too Alex. Don’t forget to take some time and save some energy for yourself and take care of your needs too 😊

Each species comes with its own needs, and to deliberately just blatantly ignore those needs, or do just the absolute bare minimum is, and rightfully so, criminal. What part of " I'm a living creature that can THRIVE ..." is so alien to some "people" !? If you are not in the LEAST bit empathetic or compassionate or dedicated, PLEASE... just DONT! Where I do believe a lot of people know what they are talking about I hear about all these things people have googled and how they KNOW whats wrong with there animal, and in some cases they maybe right and i have no problem with people looking up their animals symptoms and mentioning it but just because you know something doesn't mean they shouldn't have and be charged for an exam and if an animal has not been seen a vet should not prescribe it. Not only is this a legality issue but we need to make a living just like everyone else. I'm not sure if that was the uncharged you mentioned but i thought it was worth mentioning.

Please help! I have a sick a bearded dragon with me and I need some help bringing it back to health I just have some questions on what I could do to help it So this has been a very sickly bearded dragon ever since I got it, it’s a PetSmart beardie and is only 7 months it has been housed properly and been on a good diet but has showed symptoms of mbd before and has been treated for it but also seems to be very small for its age Now it seems to be a respiratory disease and looks to have trouble breathing normally ( I believe it’s nose is clogged) any idea of how to get this sorted out without going to the vet? I also don’t trust the vets in my area and also don’t have the money to keep taking it Any advice will be helpful! I’m worried about the quality of life for this beardie and just want to get it healthy as soon as possible if possible Ps (I might go ahead and get that drug you mentioned in this video any idea on where I can get it?)

IEMZY Martinez sorry for the wall of text but it’s worth reading. have you taken it to a vet that can deal with exotic animals/reptiles even once yet? I know it’s a big cost but many vets will be willing to work out a payment plan with you if you just call and talk to them about your situation. You only have one sick beardie and do not have the experience needed to administer this medicine, this guy in the video has been shown by a vet how to inject the drug and has handled hundreds of reptiles. You will not be able to get this drug without a prescription from a vet. The infection might not be caused by bacteria but let’s say you tried using some antibiotics you somehow got a hold of, they don’t work because it’s actually fungal or viral, you need to go to a vet. I’m sure the vet will be a bit unimpressed that you tried to administer intramuscular antibiotics with no hands on training, no professional opinion on dosage. If you had a collection of 10 animals and they all had symptoms of this and were an experienced keeper and had a vet that you knew and had a rapport with I’m sure you could pay for one exam and a big thing of the drug and be done with it. Things you can do yourself are tweaking his setup to make sure his husbandry is perfect check humidity and temps. This is the best thing you can do to help it. I’ve used this home cure before: put reptile in smaller ventilated box inside bigger box. Boil water. Make jug of water with 1/2 teaspoon of Vick’s rub + 2-3 drops of eucalyptus oil. Put 250 ml water in jug in bigger box at the other end from the reptile. Cover bigger box for 10 minutes to give the animal some vapor. Check at 5 minutes how it’s going. I’ve found that this helps with most mild infections. I use 45L storage tub for the big box but hopefully you get the idea. I hope your beardie is able to recover , you sound like you really care about its wellbeing. Keep researching online about symptoms of illnesses and hopefully this can help you communicate with a vet.
