A number of you guys have asked us exactly how we train for hiking and climbing, especially for the long/hard hikes you've been seeing us tackle lately. So, we thought it would be fun to take you along on one of our climbing and hiking training workouts. For this specific hiking workout, we were focused on muscles that are important not only for strength and endurance, but also for class 3 climbing skills. Our hiking training plans will differ based on the specific hike or climb we are preparing for, but we hope this will give you an idea of the kinds of exercises and workouts that we design to build strength and endurance and to avoid injury while out on the trails.
DISCLAIMER: This video is not intended as workout advice. We simply wanted to answer your questions and share some of our hiking training methods with you. We are not physicians licensed physical therapists or trainers. Always consult with your own doctor before attempting any new exercise or training routine.

@@LiveHardxLoveHard thank you for the kind words and encouragement. I am doing a southern Utah / Arizona month long trip. I section hike (backpack) the AT in the Spring and Fall. Hence, I have to get in shape 2x a year. For 6-8 weeks before I do lots of cardio, lunges and wellness (stretching) yoga. I hope to add a few more things from this video as I'm hiking the 100 Mile Wilderness in Maine in Sept. Lucky me! At age 59, my goal for these adventures is to enjoy them to the max, vs. just surviving them. That requires diet and excersize in advance. P.S. I agree 100% on slowing down on the dips and pull-ups, about 4 seconds down on the dips and the same going up w/ pull-ups works nice for me.

Thanks so much Ian! It really depends on whether or not we have a hard hike coming up that weekend. If we don’t have anything hard coming up, then three workouts during the week for sure. If we just finished a hard hike and have another hard one the following weekend, we may just do this once, because we need to store up energy for what’s coming up. So basically we modify our training around whatever adventure is coming up 🤗

Wow, thank you so much for this encouraging and uplifting comment! We're so happy you're enjoying the vids and can't wait to share the upcoming adventures with you! Regarding cardio training, we should probably do a whole video on this, but basically it really varies based on what we've got planned for our hiking and trail running adventures. On weeks where we've got a big sufferfest coming up, we actually go pretty light with our cardio because we don't want to overtrain or wear down our muscles. On our off weeks is where we'll put in the most time with our cardio training (although lately the off weeks seem few and far between!) and we try to cross train with a mix of running, biking and swimming so we can minimize our risk of injury as much as possible. Honestly, the biggest boost to our endurance has just come from going out on weekly hiking adventures and increasing the mileage and elevation gain little by little!

Great stuff guys! You guys are legit! Adam, add this to your rope climb challenge. Sit on the ground at the base of the rope, legs straight out and together, rope off to one side. Now hold this "L" shape, and begin climbing, leaving the rope off to one side (not going between your legs). Once you reach the top, don't slide down. Instead, maintain that "L" and lower yourself, hand-over-hand, with the rope off to the side! Elise, you're a machine!! 4 pull ups is bada$$.

@@LiveHardxLoveHard go for it lol. The best way I did it was using a deck of cards. 2-10 would be those reps per leg Aces are 32 (16 per leg) Jokers are 100 (50 per leg) K/Q/J are 20 (10 per leg) All that adds up to 1000 total. My fastest time is 50:01. The height of a step up I use is at 14 inches (no more than 15 inches so I don't overextend the hip joint with extreme high reps).

Awesome Derrick! Glad we were able to get this one out. How often we do this type of workout really depends on what we did the weekend before and what we have coming up. If we just did a complete sufferfest on Sunday, we might just only do this once on Wednesday if we have another big hike coming up on, say, Saturday. On the other hand, if we have a weekend where we're not doing much, we could easily do this kind of workout three times a week. And yes, we're always doing cardio at least 2-3x/week anytime we're not doing a massive sufferfest hike.

2 to 3 reps Pullups/ pushups and 20-25 min jog Jog 4 days a week made a big difference for me, it wasn't enough to make me super strong but it made me strong enough to enjoy the hike alot more. a 15 mile hike with 3500 feet of climbing went from grueling to moderate. My mile run went from 9 minutes to 6:45, my longest run went from 2-3 miles to several miles and I got to the point where I could do several pullups. For several years I had to work full time and go to school and I fell out of this routine/gained alittle weight, its harder to get back into it and I wish our society didn't put quite so much pressure on young people its not good for peoples long term health. I don't think you can train for altitude but being in better shape, pacing yourself, eating and drinking enough reduces the chances of altitude problems. One of my best running times was a 5k race 4 days after I spent a week at 10,000 feet. I don't think the altitude made me any stronger but I had more red blood cells which makes increase the amount of oxygen my muscles were getting which made my muscles work more efficiently. This effect only lasts a week or two.

Inverted rows are a great way to build back strength working towards pull-ups as well. My issue was that I ALWAYS relied too much on my arms, despite intending to use my back. I’d be able to get a few sloppy pull-ups before I exhausted. The rows allowed me to focus in and establish that mind/muscle connection with the muscles in my back. Like she suggests, bar hangs and negatives are great as well. Start by hanging for time from the bar in bottom position, builds grip strength. When you can do that for a minute hang from the top position on the bar for time with your shoulder blades squeezed together. Once you can do that for a minute start SLOWLY lowering yourself down from the top position. Next thing you know you’ll be knocking out pull-ups seemingly from out of nowhere. Once you build the foundation the move itself just happens.
@LiveHardxLoveHard
@LiveHardxLoveHard 3 жыл бұрын
That's great advice, Blake. Thanks for sharing! And that was definitely my problem too - I still have that issue with inverted rows. I find it hard not to get my traps involved 😂 Ultimately it's about consistency and patience and building little by little!
