How did we turn our sailing yacht into a canal boat for our journey through the french canals? This week we demonstrate the process of preparing our Southerly 38 for the french canals. We had to build a frame for transporting the mast, take down the boom, sails and wind generator, and make everything ready for unstepping the mast on the Mediterranean side of France, in preparation for entering the Canal du Midi.

What a pain in arse. Sounds fairly simple at first. Just drop the tall metal pole. When you started getting into all the stuff that is connected to it that had to be taken off and protected, I was waiting for one of you to say "we should have sailed around." Sailboats are so much work. Thanks for the effort! Can't wait for the next video!

gees guys support under the piece you are cutting needs to be a few inches from the cut on both sides. The piece was bowing down and binding on your saw blade because the supports were to far from the cut. Love you guys, keep it up.

At our marina, we remove and install approximately 65 masts twice a year, (at lift out and at lift in). We do this ourselves using a mast crane with a manual winch. It is interesting to note that no matter how often we do this every year, that nervous feeling of the mast leaving the boat and it being overhead never goes away. Great job on the mast supports and great video. Cheers.

Love these technical videos where Nick gets to OCD out. Tiny tip at 3:20 when you are having trouble sawing the 4x4. It is because you are leaning on the beam in between the two points where the beam is raised off the deck causing the saw to bind. A second set of supports close either side of the saw point would have made it easy.

After arriving in Tréguier and examining our boat with double head sails and all the associated electronics on the mast (18.5 m) we decided against removing the mast and shipping it... we were sorely disappointed in not doing the canals from Bordeaux to the Med but your video confirmed our right decision! Wow, what a project and the fact that we are a bit bigger 14.55m LOA and 4.03 beam.... we thought for the price of removing, packing, transporting and re-stepping the mast we could rent a canal boat reducing the insane stress that you went through (not to mention the amount of work). Well done you two, sorry we missed you. We sailed the outside across the Bay of Biscay to Camarinas Spain, down the coast of Portugal to Gibraltar... 1400 nm in just a few weeks. Not restful but ... our boat is in one piece and still fully rigged ready to cross the Atlantic in a few months.

Wow, you are a musician, too? You can always fall back on that, but your carpenter and design skills are impressive to say the least. You could always be a carpenter as a fall back. After all, look where it got Harrison Ford! Tying up in the French countryside is magical. Some lock houses are so original they still have shell marks from WWII on their walls. My advice to the Frenchmen I would see fishing along the canal banks was, "Bonjour, don't eat the fish!!"

@@sailingrubyrose In all fairness - I am one of the Neel fence sitters (ever since the 51) and frankly your review felt VERY fair and unbiased to me. Also been on boats since the eighties, and feel comfortable saying, nobody should be able to show that many problems on ONE production boat.. plain and simple. You were kind and generous in not giving a rather balanced opinion constantly pre-empting by saying "this is the first hull" I review hardware and often pad opinions with "this is a pre-production unit we can all hope it will be better when it ships, but I can't comment on that until I see a shipping hardware" But being im still somewhat interested in the 51, not the 45 and probably not the 47. Can't wait to see your Neel unbox - take two.

Do love watching your videos guys but seeing nick try teach Terysa how to cut that first bit of wood was brilliant, you can’t cut a piece of wood in the middle while it’s supported either end and both leaning on it haha, it will trap the saw and make it impossible to cut 😂 cracking video tho 👌🏻

You 2 are influential in my life now. Believe it or not you've convinced me to stay in a mono. After watching your decision process whether to go to Catamaran, i realized that the only reason I wanted a cat was the cool factor. I'm single handed so I don't need the room. Price is a consideration. There are other influences but to complicated for here. From not liking your channel to loving it to being influenced by it. WOW!!! Bravo!! Congrats!! Nick, try to find and buy a Japanese style saw, it’s the one which cuts when you pull the saw instead to cut when you push it! You will immediately appreciated how easier is to cut!!! So, you are going to Bordeaux, not to Northern France. Nevertheless, I do hope to meet you, at least, once at sea ! Indeed my friend. We literally decided 2 days earlier to transport our own mast and as such we’re at the mercy of the local hardware store. It was tiny and not well stocked.

Excellent job on the mast cradle. We have done it with our Hunter 356 going to Florida from Kentucky Lake TN River mike 24 in the US to Mobile, Alabama 650 miles, where mast goes back up, then to SW Florida and returning to Mobile to take the mast down for the 650 mile trip back north to just 1-1/2 miles south of Kentucky Dam - Lighthouse Landing. We use the Tennessee River and Tenn-Tom waterway. It’s quite a job getting the prep done to take down and put back up. We have 13 locks and lots of bridges. We see a lot of boats with mast cradles since we are on the US Great Loop route. You are to be complimented on the robustness of your rig. It is quite a process dealing with the wiring, radar and then still being able to get to your anchor well and move about the deck when you are going through locks and tieing up at various marinas and other places. Another factor is you make your boat go from your typical,length to,your mast length. It takes a day or two to mentally compensate for the mast overhang at the front and back. In our case we go from 36 to 50 feet. I look forward to your videos and wish you both the best in your travels.

Wow that was a massive undertaking! Not to mention expensive. Than you have to include all the many spots of tea for all the energy needed to get all that work done. Tea is my go to. Both hot and iced although I still drink coffee in the morning. Do you ever drink iced tea? That Southerly is like a transformer. It can be many things. It does it all beautifully. Awesome vid.... The opening sequence was golden. I am now sure you put yourself thru school working for Two Men and a Truck. The squeeze box at the end was epic. My mother taught her best friend how to play the piano, organ and the accordion when they were in college many, many moons ago. Her friend went on to play for the Laurence Welk Show. Fascinated by the complexity and sound of the accordion, I attempted to take lessons from my mother. Alas I am not as coordinated as she. I bought a dime bag and a guitar. Never looked back! LMAO

Much work my friends, I understand the new experience motoring thru the canals of France and the opportunity to go thru all the rigging to verify conditions of the fasteners and such, but really this is a boat load of work, not sure I would have done it . But you two are gamers. Good Job.

Hi there Ruby Rose! I love your videos and it is a shame that this year when you were in Brittany, we did not meet up (I live here). Anyway, this video was really informative and ..... has totally put me off ever considering taking a yacht onto the French Canals. My dreams of a blue water boat (perhaps a nearly classic Contessa 43) with a 2 metre drought would not be possible anyway, but to add all of that prep work with the mast ... I think that a quick sprint through the Straits of Gibraltar would be easier! Keep going , I promise to keep watching.

Cracking vlog guys and I did larf when yous was trying to saw the timber whilst standing on it braking the saw . Top job n bet it was stressful to say the least :-D

Hey guys, you're a recent discovery for me (thanks Nicky and Jason) and look forward to your videos every week. Maybe think about getting a fold able Japanese pull saw...small lightweight and very sharp. Thanks for the great videos!

I watched when Distant Shores went through the canals and it was beautiful and amazing at times that they actually fit. You probably have already gone through by now I don't know how much delay you're working with on your videos but good luck. Get fresh batteries when you travel under the streets through the tunnel 😊👍👍👍

Nice Video, traveling through the french canals seem to become quite popular, the folks from Distant Shores did that a couple of years ago with their sailboat and even got through the canals in Paris with their boat. Similar boat, also a Southerly with a swing keel, I think it was a 48.

Terysa- Nick 'sold you down the river' (so to speak) Cutting that wood would have been much easier if you had support directly under it. As it was, as you were pushing down on the board you were closing the kerf causing the saw to bind. If you watch closely at 3:33 you can see the wood flexing down as Nick cuts. Well constructed otherwise. 👍🏾
