Julie Bogart recommends Jot It Down for ages 5-7 ish, (not age 8 as I mentioned at the start).
We used Jot It Down by Brave Writer in our 1st and 2nd grade homeschool, when my kids were 6.5 and 8. They were on the older end and probably ready for Brave Writers next level up called Partnership in Writing.
That wasn’t an issue for us, my kids simply did more of the writing on their own than if I had a younger child not handwriting much at all. It’s flexible!
We did about half the projects, which I’ll share more about in this video!
This is a gentle writing program with 10 month long projects. You are encouraged and allowed to write for your kids, to help them get their original thought down into paper.
I could see the natural progression of them taking more control of the projects, and they began to transition into more of what Julie calls the “partnership” phase where they write with my help, rather than me writing it all for them. .
Honestly, I would recommend this more for kids on the younger end, and would utilize this idea of writing your child’s words down when they are tiny and share random abstract stories you don’t want to forget!
Watch as I show you what the 10 projects are, a brief explanation of what each involves, and some examples of our finished projects.
