It's their accents that I'm most impressed with. I can speak other languages but I can never lose my accent that will out me as a dirty foreigner right away lol.

我以前也特别追求accent，会模仿美剧里的发音，去到澳洲之后老师问我是不是在美国读的高中，我心里还会窃喜。直到硕士读了教育学，第一学期的必修课有一门是关于literacy，批判了很多英语教学所谓的“authenticity” “native speakers”这种概念，并且说保留自己的accent和语言带来的思维模式是很重要并值得鼓励的，讲了很多translingual，digital literacy的东西。现在我不会再去嘲讽说Chinglish的人了，因为Chinglish不是贬义词，是可以被鼓励的

Really fluent in speaking mainly their accent make them like a native speakers, they can clearly express and elaborate their ideas very well,overall its impressively.

These kids are just soooo cool! They have their own interesting and independent opinions on all aspects of things that I never thought of even in Chinese language when I was at that age. I am so proud of them as a Chinese!

I remember back in the late '80s early '90s being able to speak English in China was a big deal. Aside from university students the general public's fluency was not that high. Those who had good English foundation had an easy time of getting a job in a foreign business operating in China at the time. Of course, this was around the time when the locals were still fascinated by the appearances of westerners coming to China on business or tourism. Nowadays foreigners entering China has become so mainstream that nobody really bats an eye anymore, and English education has become more widespread to prepare the citizens to interact with foreigners on a business level Still, listening to these kids you can tell they've had a lot of practice by talking to each other and continuously use the language to deepen their understanding, there's almost no accent and they're almost indistinguishable from having been raised in a English speaking country. This is exactly the kind of thing kids in Japan are not doing and why they have such a hard time with it, they focus too much on the grammar and spelling, and don't do enough practice by speaking

It's not just speaking the language but these kids can really communicate their thoughts very clearly and coherently.

I went to this school. It’s actually a public school and entirely free, but people are right in assuming that the students mostly came from resourceful families (although definitely not exclusively so.) So the barrier doesn’t actually come from the financial cost, but the insane entrance “interviews” and exams where you could only be competitive if your parents signed you up for a ton of tutoring classes from a young age. English proficiency is especially sought after in the selection process, since foreign language is supposed to be the school’s forte. A lot of kids in Shanghai nowadays receive bilingual education in kindergarten, and families with the means to do so hire native speakers as private tutors or send them to programs abroad to practice English. Everyone in this video was probably offered a spot precisely for the good English they spoke. Maybe things have changed, but I wouldn’t say there’s anything special in the education itself, other than maybe a relative abundance of teachers who are native speakers. The kids were probably already fluent when they came into the school in 6th grade (which obviously isn’t to undermine their own incredible efforts.) We also had a “special” class every year that would take a second foreign language as a requirement for like 6-7 hours a week, and opportunities for electives for other classes, so that’s how these kids picked up German/French/Spanish. At this point, they’ve probably only studied these languages for a year or two, but once they get to high school, they’d also have a lot of opportunities for school-wide activities and events in foreign languages, competitions, and exchange programs abroad. A lot of people end up studying abroad with very few participating in the Chinese college entrance exam (Gaokao), and many end up at Ivy League schools. So this is definitely not representative of the whole city, let alone less urban or affluent parts of China. To be fair though, the school still does a really good job in foreign language teaching and offers an unparalleled breadth of extracurricular activities, which is probably why some of these kids do debate (maybe travel for debate) and still have a lot of cool interests, despite the rigid Chinese education system.

想起来我以前在国内的时候也上过这种牛小牛中，周围人太优秀了，百花齐放，而家里人从小也没怎么管过我，衬得我啥啥不行，尤其英语可差了。不过后来出国了口语就赶超了。现在想想国内的教育真的很好，起码那种要做就做到最好的精神现在也给我带来很好的影响。

As a Chinese student who havs graduated from Senior high school in a small city just a few weeks ago and seeing how amazing these junior students are, I give myself 1star.

I'm from Belgium, northern region aka Flanders, where we speak Flemish a form of Dutch, second language is french, which they speak in the southern region of Belgium aka Walloon, and German is easy to for most Belgians from the Northern Region/Flanders. Those kids are awesome.

When I lived in China in 2011 to 2013, in a city near Shanghai, if I needed help with Chinese and I was alone I often looked for a young teenager. They could almost all speak English well enough to help me. Most Adults over age 30 spoke near zero English, except for the ones I interfaced with at work (for a multinational company).

I'm from Shanghai. The school interviewed in the video is indeed the best junior school in English and foreign languages in Shanghai. But the best school in Shanghai is called Huayu.

wish I could speak that fancy English when I was at their age, but it took me so many years to master the accent and oral skills, even had to work abroad until I got the language skill, guess I was not that hard-working on English in school and things go around to my later life of 30s. one more thing that I truly admire is the education resources in first-tier cities, check out more kids in less developed cities and you'll see.

Very impressive! I can see the bright future of my homeland from these young kids.
