@@Gardenninja I sure will! I pruned my bush last night using the technique you shared in your video :) Another question for you. My gooseberry bush is about 4 years old - last year was first time I was able to eat the berries as the birds typically get to them first. I outsmarted them last year by covering them with a net! the berries I got were very small, like marble size, unlike the large grape sized ones I grew in Sweden when I lived there. (I live in the US now.) Do you know what could be causing their small size and what I could do about it? Thanks in advance :)
@Gardenninja
@Gardenninja 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Marda. Is it the same species or variety as the one in Sweden? There’s many cultivars and species you see. Failing that a good autumn mulch with peat free compost should help. If they’re in containers they will need a yearly mulch and liquid feed when growing. Checkout my comfrey tea guide for how to make your own! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mth4m8xptbfdgZs.html 🥷🌿🤘

@Gardenninja

Hi Pippa. We take them back by a third to concentrate the fruiting potential on 3 - 5 buds. This means bigger gooseberries and more of them. Rather than a sparser branch with more vegetative growth and less fruit. 🙂 Really glad you liked the video. Happy gardening and pruning! Lee 🥷🌿

I’d do some maintenance pruning in Winter. Ie remove the crossing or something doesn’t stems given you’ve had a moderate amount of gooseberries. So you don’t cut off too much of the older fruiting growth. 🥷🌿 Lee

So far, this is the clearest goose-pruning video I’ve seen. I’d REALLY like a LOT more close ups so I can see what ….. say….a damaged branch, or what an OLD branch, versus an “older” but still keepable branch looks like. The home we bought has 2 existing goose bushes (both red) and about 7 red currant bushes, as well as 2black currant bushes. ALL need serious attention, but I’m at a loss as to where to begin. (They’ve been without pruning for about 6 years). It’s apparent that both of these species require the basic same pruning, so that’s a good thing, but how much is too much? I’ll try for this fall October/ November ..before the snow arrives, to give them a go… Any suggestions as to how, where to start? Off “goose” topic, have you ever heard of Royal (or Royalty) Raspberries? Quite another experience those are…. But I’ll keep searching. Awesome video, thanks….look forward to hearing back from you..thanks. e. 🇨🇦
@Gardenninja
@Gardenninja Жыл бұрын
Hi. Thanks so much for the kind words. It’s easier to spot the older less productive wood. It’s darker. More brittle and looks more gnarled. With 6 year old bushes simply remove 50% of all canes. Then next year you’ll be able to spot the fresh new ones and they’ll stand out amongst the older wood. The take it from there! Happy pruning!! Lee 🥷🌿🤘

@Gardenninja
@Gardenninja Жыл бұрын
Hi Rik. Move them before the spring. As quickly as possible given mine are already budding. Then you should be fine. You just want to avoid moving them when they’re in full leaf. It will effect fruiting. It’s surprising how all gardeners tend to plant things too close together. Think it’s the excitement of getting plants in the ground! 🥷🤘🌿 Good luck with the gooseberries!

@@GardenninjaHey Lee. Thank you for your timely reply. i'll put it on my tomorrows 'To-do List'. Brilliant video - armed with this new knowledge I fell I can do the job now. I have taken on a half plot allotment. The gooseberry bush we inherited is massive. Gave us so much fruit. But I have no idea when it was pruned, or how old it is. Should I just cut it all the way back to ground?
@Gardenninja
@Gardenninja Жыл бұрын
Hi. Thanks for the kind words about my gardening KZfaq guides. My advice would be to remove any crossing or damaged stems this year. Don’t cut it all the way back. It will mean no fruit and you’ll still need to selectively prune. Work with what you’ve got. Take those out this winter. Then the year after start to remove the oldest shoots and just work on it that way! You’ll get fab results. Happy gardening! Hello the clip was very helpful. I have a different variety of gooseberry it has orange berries and no thorns. I was just wondering if it needs to be cut back similar? 140mm Cape Gooseberry - Physalis peruviana. I have a very long growing season and the gooseberry fruited autumn through to winter. when they should have fruited in summer. I live in a sub tropical area and my gooseberries didn't really rest in winter. I was thinking once the fruit has finished ripening I'll trim it back. I've seen some people cut branches and hang inside to finish ripening fruit such as chillies and capsicums which are part of the same family so I was wondering if I could do that with the gooseberry branches?
@Gardenninja
@Gardenninja 9 ай бұрын
Hi Physalis. Doesn’t need the same pruning method. It’s more a neaten and tidy style if growing in the topics. So in winter just take out any congested branches every few years. Here in the Uk you cut it back to the ground each year. To keep it small and ensure fruits each year. Given our dodgy weather. If yours has become lacklustre. Cut it right back to the ground after it’s fruited and mulch. Hope that helps. Lee

Thanks for your great tips. I planted gooseberry bushes last autumn. Should I still prune them now or wait until next year?

I’d wait until next spring. Then they’ve had a full growing season and you can spot this years growth vs last year. Enjoy your gooseberries!!! 🥷🌿 Lee

Hi Lee, just discovered your video via a search engine. What is a normal yield for a mature bush? Last summer I harvested about 1.4 - 1.5kg from three bushes. They look healthy but haven't been pruned for three years (they are on a neglected allotment plot I took over).
@Gardenninja

Hi Crosland hill! That’s a pretty good harvest. What I would say is pruning now in winter will help open them up to stop mildew and other pests so it’s always worth while. They really are bullet proof so don’t worry too much. But yes a prune at least every 2-3 years is advisable. I'm planning to grow a gooseberry plant for the first time. What variety would you recommend between a Hinnomaki Red and an Invicta.

Both are wonderful Elmer. But I’d start with Invicta. Bigger fruit and less likely to get mildew in my experience! 🤘🥷🌿 Make sure you checkout my blog www.gardenninja.co.uk for hundreds more free gardening guides! Lee

I have gooseberries without thorns. Moreover, I bought currants, but there you go. So, following advice for cutting currants, I left them to grow freely because all were young branches. They grew a bit more than I want them to. Can I cut them a little more than 1/3 and still have fruits next year?
@Gardenninja
@Gardenninja 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Olivera. Great question. Yes you can but it will reduce yield. Currants fruit in last years growth so any older wood you take out means less fruits but it does mean you can better shape the bush. Just make sure it’s in a good balanced shape and then enjoy the fruits of your labour! 🥷🌿🤘

Can you espalier Gooseberries? What about currents - Red and Black
@Gardenninja
@Gardenninja 3 жыл бұрын
Yes you can to all three. Currants do flower and fruit on new growth too so you’re less vicious with the pruning. Focusing on keeping an open goblet shape. I only take off 1/5 for currants because of this. Hope that helps! Lee 🥷🌿

I'm interested in the best size pot for a gooseberry? I've one in a 45cm pot, wondering if I should upsize it or does it not mind being compact?
@Gardenninja
@Gardenninja Жыл бұрын
Hey, it depends on the species. The bigger the pot the better. That’s because they are hungry plants and will need plenty of feed and moisture during the summer. Happy gardening! Lee 🥷🤘🌿

Hi. They can be grafted as a single ‘standard’ shape onto another plants main stem but not really pruned as a single trunk from young as their growth shape is open like a palm so quite difficult to force upright. 🥷🤘

Hi I have been growing my gooseberries for a couple of years now ,last year fruit was very few and far between ,so I fed and cared for them better and my bushes were brilliant .I was attacked by saw fly lava,wow in one day they dropped my bushes ,I successfully treated the bushes with natural powdered daisy,but I didn't get any fruit at all.How can I remedy it?

Hi Lesley. Gooseberry saw fly can be a royal pain! Now you’ve managed to rid them you should see fruit next year. Give your bushes a good mulch this autumn. They should be right! Lee 🥷🌿🤘

Hi Agne, Gooseberries are deciduous plants so are fine left outside in all weather, unless you live in an arctic state! A good compost mulch will help feed them but I leave mine out all year! Happy gardening. Lee

@@Gardenninja The thick blade should be at the side of the cut, the thick blade facing away from the cut. This way least damage is done to the branches and twigs. Maybe it's a bit of nitpicking for the small cuts you make here, but when I realized this is the way to use the secateurs, it was quite an "ah!" moment for me.

The only experience I have with gooseberries is from when I was dating my now husband. His mother (from Yorkshire) would joke about sending his sister or brother out with us as a gooseberry :) Could one apply this method to blueberries?

If you follow this man's advice you will be cutting off the next year's fruiting branches as he does! Yes, no cross overs or damaged but not next years fruiting...PLEASE! For my provenance, I've been growing gooseberries for 50 years and sell them to genuine Farm Shops Hundre£s of pounds every year! You have been warned!
@Gardenninja
@Gardenninja 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your feedback Stephen. The issue with gooseberries that fruit as you rightly point out on last years growth is that you have to tidy them up as some point. I’d rather have a healthy neat gooseberry which I find keep better healthy. Gooseberries still can shoot from old wood as well though not as prolifically. For beginner gardeners old and new growth is hard to distinguish. Meaning they get confused, possibly put off and then they give up. Waiting for everything to have fruited in this two year cycle can become tricky and eventually you have to nip off growth that may fruit if left. I’m glad you’re keeping gooseberries in our farm shops. They are a delicious and somewhat rare occurrence in other shops. Keep up the great work. Lee 🥷🌿
