As a NCS and Nanny and parent 😊 I agree. By 6 mos for sure. Pacifiers are for infants. It is so much easier to wean as an infant than a toddler.

I really enjoyed this. We used the pacifier and have an excellent sleeper who sleeps 11-12 hours a night. We have always limited the pacifier use to only bedtime, and this worked well for us even after sleep training. However, she's 13 months old now, and I noticed that she is showing interest in having the pacifier when she gets up from a nap or in the morning, when before it was always our routine to leave it behind. That was my prompt to ditch it. NGL, it's a bit like sleep training all over again, though a bit easier. Would have been a better idea to ditch the pacifier when we sleep trained, and would advise any new parents to do it that way instead of waiting.

I love the specific examples you're giving out in your videos. Doesn't leave much room to second guess the decision to take it away. I've thrown out my 8mo pacifier a few days ago but he doesn't really know how to suck on his fingers and self sooth and cries for 10-15 minutes before every sleep. Is that normal? How long does it take for them to get used to falling asleep without it?
@littlezsleep

Hey there, Yulianna! Yes, it is very normal for their to be a "learning period" of time (a few days or so) before little one's catch on to self-soothing in a new way!

Hello, Becca! Thanks a lot for your videos! My girl use pacifier only for sleeping. I tried to get rid of the pacifier cold turkey for one day when my baby just turned 3 months old. But suddenly she started to ‘sucking’ her lower lip. I’ve got scared of that and returned the pacifier. After few days she stopped doing that.Now I’m waiting for her 4th month to remove pacifier again. should I worry if it happens again? will lip-sucking remain a harmful habit?

I have an 18 month old who would sleep 12 hours a night with a pacifier that we would clip to his pajamas at night so he wouldn’t lose it. But over Christmas time his pacifier accidentally got left at someone’s house in another state and we didn’t realize it till we had been on the road a good bit already. I was really nervous but my husband said instead of buying a new one we are just gonna see what happens. So glad he decided this because he one cried the first night!! Since then he hasn’t seemed to miss it!! 👏 I guess I was relying on it more than he was!!

Hey Becca! Do you even recommend using one the first 16 weeks? I didn't with my first, and it was nice not to have to worry about stopping it, but I wonder if it would have helped him as a newborn. Unsure if I'll go the pacifier route for the next baby... curious what you think!

Hey Becca! Since the beginning my first baby has been amazing. I’m listening to him and his cues but found 6-8pm his put down time and we start the day at 6am normally. He’s 11 weeks and has never shown much of a interest for pacifiers or bottles. Once he latched on, he’s loved to eat and boob soothe right before he sleeps. We are working on the night long stretches he’s had 6,7, and 8 hours of stretch’s and then sometimes he wakes up in 3 to 4 hours. We have a bed time routine and I’m unsure why some nights are successful for long stretches and some aren’t? Any tips and when he does wake in the night besides a pacifier or feeding immediately should I try the pick up and down method. Trying to figure out what’s best without the pacifier. He’s getting better at discovering hands and I want him to look toward the natural ways to soothe evening if it’s eating. I feel like when he went to sleep I missed a nap or a feeding or patting long enough to keep him upright before he lays down. What should I do? I feel so close to accomplishment here

Hey Shania! Congrats on your new little one! The big thing I would focus right now is keeping baby WIDE awake for all feeds, so he learns that food is for nourishment not sleep :)

Our baby is 4mo and can sleep and fall asleep without a paci almost everyday but when we travel and are out for a long time and have him in the wrap or cant soothe him any other way, we use the paci and we start from 0 again. Its a back and forth to remove paci from routine and rather easily so, but im physically recovering and just gave up until travels wont be as needed anymore... Any tips in particular? We cant seem to get him drowsy or calm due to traveling constantly in wrap.

My oldest child is 6 and we never introduced the pacifier but she started sticking her fingers at 6 weeks of age and still does to this day!!! Do you have tips for kids who suck they fingers?
@littlezsleep

Your dentist will have great tips on this! I would just start correcting them during the day that they are a big kid and don't need to suck their fingers

We gave my baby a pacifier when he was newborn. He grew out of it/didn’t care either way after a few months. We offered him one we had at like 6 months and he was hooked 😅 luckily by then he could put it in his mouth if he dropped it so that was never an issue. Now he goes to sleep with like 3 in his crib but he can go without in the day

Baby is almost 3 months and we just dropped it cold turkey 3 nights ago because it was becoming problematic with night wakings and replacing. Should we drop it COMPLETELY for naps and car rides?
@littlezsleep
@littlezsleep Жыл бұрын
Hey, Fabiola! We recommend dropping it completely by 4 months old, so yes, if she's dropped it for sleep we encourage you to drop it during other parts of the day, too!

Can you still use the pacifier when going in the car? My 4 month old gets very upset when he is in his capsule and we use the pacifier to soothe him otherwise he would just be crying the whole time
@littlezsleep

Hey Abby! I recommend dropping the pacifier completely or it can be confusing for baby. Once you take away the paci baby will learn to self soothe, which actually can improve his happiness in the car!

Hey Andrea! I would recommend formally sleep training WHILE you take the pacifier away. That way you are giving your baby new skills to self soothe. If you want a step by step plan, check out my baby course! littlezsleep.com/baby

Just wondering how a stuffed animal or security blanket is different than a pacifier as far as sleep goes? I can see a baby or toddler having a meltdown if they don’t have it for sleep, or fully waking up at night to find the stuffed animal or blanket-just like the paci! Are they really that different?
@littlezsleep
@littlezsleep Жыл бұрын
Hey Lorraine! The sucking of the pacifier is helping the child become drowsy. With a lovey or blanket, the child is holding it while they become drowsy, but it is not making them drowsy.
