In another word, given the circumstances Thailand played a top nutch policy, politics ,Diplomacy and outsmarted the colonial crooks and survived with its dignity intact. Kudos to the Thai Kings and administration of that time for the leadership and courage.

Seceded Myanmar (Burma) to the British, Indo-China to the French and parts of northern Malaya (Perlis, Kedah, Kelantan which were long-term protectorates) to the British (for the formation of Federation of Malaya). Also, the Death Railway and Japanese occupiers moved freely through Southern Thailand from then conquered Malay peninsular to attack British-occupied Burma. The Siam Kingdom did a good job of accommodating threats, assimilating the conquered and modernising to be a buffer state between the foreign colonisers. In the process they did lose territory and personnel (attacked by the Japanese at the start of Kra peninsular invasion before forming a treaty with the Japanese and a fair number of Thais were shanghaied to build the Death Railway with Asian deaths (South Asian labourers from Malay and Malays from Malay and Siam) being double that allied POWs. However, what is present-day Thailand was preserved as a Kingdom and their acheivement should be noted.
