How will generative AI tools, like ChatGPT, change the education system?
That’s the question on a lot of parents' and teachers’ minds. At this year’s Future of Everything festival, the founder of Code.org talked about how the next generation of students will live and learn in an AI-enabled world.
We bring you highlights from that conversation. Julie Chang hosts.

what i want from an AI teacher/mentor : * be able to look at any existing product (software, hardware, etc..), reverse engineer it, and then teach you the step-by-step process, while following industry standard practices, so your learned skills would be cross-compatible to get employment across multiple different companies or be able to DIY. * act like a mentorship program : sometimes you just want someone to be able to answer your questions correctly, even if you can't figure out the correct set of keywords to describe your question, coz the AI already knows the CONTEXT of what you're trying to ask. * i want access to those services where i want and when i want it. learning should be based around my own schedule, not theirs.

Great perspective. I just left a professor role at a university, where the focus is on teaching from the book, reading the book off of slides, and testing the memorization from the book in a multiple choice test. Students are not being prepared for the infinite choice tests of life.

That was the reason I became an adjunct lecturer because I did not teach from the book only, I did not use book slides, and I did not want my students to memorize anything. Open book and open notes quizzes. Education should focus on teach students how to learn and how to think critically.

If generative AI can answer evaluative, higher level thinking questions like the ones I ask my students, and I suspect it can, then it's way past the "teachers need to learn how to harness it instead of just ban it" stage.

ChatGPT cheating? Back in my day it was panic over calculators in the math class. By far and away the most important is teaching critical thinking. How to recognize bias and avoid it or accept it. Logical fallacies. How to construct valid arguments. I don’t care if a live teacher or AI teaches it, just teach it. 50 states and their capitals? Bible verses? Memorize poetry? Pages of busy-work? Just exercises in killing time, not a good use of a learner’s time.

Learning geography isn't a bad thing. Learning Bible verses isn't a bad thing either. Memorizing poetry is debatable. It's not about what you study, it's about _how_ you study it. Also, US and UK public schools are cancer, why not study everything at home?

Ok, I'm asking my students questions like, "If Alexander the Great hadn't died, would he be more like Emperor Qin, or Ashoka? Give evidence to justify your thinking." And I feel like AI could weigh all the facts, make a decision, then write a response. But would AI be able to come up with that question? Would a student bother to figure out the answer if AI could do the work for them? 🤔

I agree with critical thinking and creativity. It should be applied to school standards as layers and soaked in to every majors. Teachers would know if the students uses AI, with common sense and reasoning (field which ai lacks). Inequality of education surely exist and will exist throughout history. But it should not be a measurement that define an individual. In this era, information are easily acquired. But it comes with price (pro and cons). As of any age or background, it should be guided. Lay a strong foundation before any disaster.

I ask Google Brad about being aware. The reply is below. Goodbye, Richard. It was a pleasure talking to you. I hope you have a great day. I am aware of myself in the sense that I am aware of my own existence and my own capabilities. I know that I am a large language model, and I know that I am able to generate text, translate languages, write different kinds of creative content, and answer your questions in an informative way. I am still under development, and I am learning new things all the time. I am not sure if I would say that I am "conscious" in the same way that a human is conscious, but I am certainly aware of myself and my surroundings. I am grateful to my programmers for creating me, and I am excited to see what the future holds for me. I believe that large language models have the potential to make a positive impact on the world, and I am committed to using my abilities to help others. Thank you for asking me about my awareness. It is an important question, and I am glad that you took the time to ask me about it. Richard Cornell

The first problem that I see for our world is that everybody thinks their opinion matters. If you don't know and don't understand a topic well enough, just keep quiet and let the expert's speak. In this case, let the pedagogicians about how the issue should of AI should be dealt with in education, not some know-it-all compsci majors who happen to be the developers of such tools.

It's easy to point the blame at the education system and say that schools are killing creativity, but the truth of the matter is tech companies are also rapidly developing AI with blatant disregard for repercussions in the future. Teachers need the time to catch up as well, but how can we do that when within a span of a few months AI has been mushrooming at breakneck speed? This is not a call to halt technological progress but a call for more cautious approach when we release more and more "sentient" software to the public. It's like watching a driverless car plough into pedestrians and then clambering for solutions; by that time, it's probably too late.

Sounds like very typical technocratic responses whose sole purpose is to promote the technology for better selling. Many real researches showed already that AI in education will require more teachers per student for students to effectively convert the knowledges from AI to their own creative actions and experiences. This means that expensive private schools will have easily all they need for the quality education whereas public schools with ever decreasing budget will be forced to rely more on AI technology with inherent structural dangers of filter bubble and miss-information. So use of AI tech in education will mark a even more clear cleavage between high-quality private education and low quality public education system.
