How will the Suez Canal blockage disrupt global trade? | Inside Story

Global shipping is in chaos because of a mishap on a major waterway.
The Ever Given container ship became jammed on the Suez Canal in Egypt.
That's created a tailback of other cargo vessels carrying goods in both directions between Asia and Europe.
Egypt says it hopes to be able to dislodge the ship and reopen the canal.
So what will happen if the blockage isn't cleared soon?

Produce everything local, what can be produced local, and stop cheap-slave outsourcing, with the decreasing skills in people with consumer-mentality, with the side effect of better air (hopefully the insanity of lithium-battery driven ships will not become implemented. Even better rowing/cycling-boat-trainings-camp instead of foolish lifestyle-gyms?, and more true adventures instead of boring comfort? *just how strong was the wind that day to be able to move a 200,000 metric ton container ship?! something seems fishy to me...*
@florianarbes
@florianarbes 3 жыл бұрын
Well, you can actually calculate it. Wind loads can be quite strong. They increase quadratical with the wind speed. Imagine you are in a storm and then you open your jacket and hold it like a sail. Now extrapolate that to the size of that ship, its 400m long and 50m high! Lets say the gust wind speed was 18 m/s. From the physical properties of air follows the pressure on a horizontal wall is then 240 N/m2 Multiplying that by 400m length and 50 m height of the vessel gives you a force of 480 000 N. That is a massive force, it should be enough to move that ship. How fast is just a question of the resistance of the water.

This program is on AlJazerra which is fully funded by Qatari government and completely biased against current Egyptian President El-Sisi and his administration. If you watch again carefully, you will see that the questions are directed to one side to switch this from an accidental thing to a political attack against El-Sisi especially from the Egyptian guest. Who’s is probably a Muslim Brotherhood member. Qatar supported Muslim Brotherhood to rule Egypt and took over the revolution on 2011. The MBH turned Egypt from a liberal open country to a religious fanatic country. El-Sisi with a permission from 30 million people who went on the streets on June 2013 to repel MBH, yes that’s right 30 million, he had to free Egypt from them and since that time Qatar leave no effort to ruin his reputation. But the truth is that he is one of the best if not by far the best Egyptian ruler ever. I can tell more about what he have done for Egypt since he took over in 2014. BTW , he came to the presidency by free state elections.

So far in the reporting of this incident, I've heard some discussion regarding the investigation into the causes of this mishap that will surely follow. What I haven't heard yet is any mention of the vessel's "black box", the recorder that has proven crucial in air crash investigations and is becoming available, and moreover required, in all modes of transportation. Generally, it's standard procedure when an incident such as this occurs is that the "black box" recorder {or recorders-commercial aircraft are required to carry two, one for flight data and one for crew communication) is located and secured to prevent loss of the data it contains. A good question for the operators of the vessel and the canal is, "Where's the black box?"

I, dear friends, do not understand this bureaucracy with a container ship in the Suez Canal. I can advise several ways to quickly remove the container ship: 1) Arrange a flash mob in the networks, paint avatars, share the hashtag "I/We are a container ship", declare a sit-in school strike. 2) Invite the Avengers - although I think Hulk and Vision can handle it together. 3) Ask the visionary of modernity, who previously dug super-fast tunnels, rescued children from caves and solved the problems with electricity in Australia. He must have something in reserve. It can't be that an advanced civilization, led by the architects of the universe, in fact, was unable to easily and simply align some barge turned by the wind (!). And it can't be that some unfortunate wind can take and clog 12% of the world's trade. ...Or maybe the civilization imagines too much about itself?

How about getting a squadron of military choppers that can carry tanks(if they can bare the weight) and have them unload bit by bit until light enough to move. May take a while so at the same time build a higher water section around it, block it off and fill it with more water and move it. May be quicker erecting multiple pulley towers or cranes. Huge inflatable things under to assist? Assign huge airships to help also. Maybe 2 smaller container ships with craness on either side? Just some ideas that ppl have probably thought of. Thanks.

To me, the answer is both simple, and obvious. If you have a huge object that’s stuck, you need something of sufficient power to release it. If tug boats aren’t up to the job, then you need something bigger, perhaps much, much bigger to pull it out, for example, an empty cargo ship. You would need a lot of hardened steel and someone to form into a shape that would not only strengthen the front of the stuck ship, but also to allow it to be pulled with enough force to free it, but not break it. Why the experts haven’t thought of this is beyond me 🤷‍♂️

This is a great interview/program!... I have never seen the host before not do I watch this network; although this is what “ journalism “ is missing so much in the western world (especially the most western continent of North America).. The journalism we get is so sold out to their own .gov that info is so lacking that the big networks aren’t even worth watching (and 80%+++ don’t watch them). Good job (so far)

This is Al Jazeera, and I believe it is a Qatari news agency partly funded by the state. They not only cover world events, I’ve also seen a documentary from them on Simon Shaheen, a Palestinian musician that essentially revived Arab music in America This isn’t the only news that is state funded and is miles better than American news. Noticed a pattern developing,, state news agency from developed countries=informative news agency

That’s AlJazerra which is fully funded by Qatari government and completely biased against current Egyptian President El-Sisi. If you watch again carefully, you will see that the questions are directed to one side to switch this from an accidental things to a political attack against El-Sisi especially from the Egyptian guest. I can tell you more about what he have done in Egypt since he took over in 2014. BTW , he came to be the president by an elections.

@@AlifLamMiim Some fact points: He cured millions of Egyptians from a long time Hepatitis-C disease that they suffered and no one cared before. He protected the country from a civil war after the MBH were taken down by the people. All foreign media will call a coupe but Egyptians call it a real revolution. He created a mega projects in all sides of the economy that I can’t even count. He eliminated the terrorist attacks that happened almost on daily basis in Sinai. Egypt before 2015 was hugely suffering from lake of electricity, he was able to solve this and now Egypt has enough power to export to other countries. Many more things that can’t even remember all.
