I think Tangled is a movie that shows a perfect balance between a man and a woman. Rapunzel and Flynn are both super likable in their own way. Rapunzel is a typical feminine girl and Flynn on the other hand is a manly character complementing Rapunzel. The thing is that men and women do not need to compete with one another, they need to complement each other.

Too bad disney hates men. What I dont understand is that how can you prevent toxic masculinity if you wont give us anmother example such as Flynn Rider? I don't understand why they have to throw men to the side, It makes me sad that disney is only using men as a plot device rather than a key player with the main character.

In John Wick when Akira fought that giant man and killed him no one batted an eye. Why? Because she fought like a girl. She used her superior agility to maneuver around him and attack his vital points, however the film makes no mistake in showing that when the guy got a hold of her he literally launched her like a child across the room. That’s how you can portray a woman taking down a man and no one will care because it’s a somewhat realistic portrayal of the realities of men and women. So in the end Akira appears even more fearsome as she is able to overcome a much bigger stronger opponent through tactics and skill. Not hard to do when a modicum of brain power is used.

For instance, ive been working on a story about a group of people, men and women, with various powers, only one of them is held back from gaining those powers due to him having crippling PTSD from his time in WW1, having survivors guilt, and suffering from self loathing, depression, and severe anxiety. These are things he will have to overcome in order for him to feel like he's worthy of the power. None of these things take away from his gender, and do not serve to knock him down while building someone else up.

Hey I just saw Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves in theaters and I actually enjoyed it. Yes, Chris Pine's character is somewhat emasculated in film, however his manhood is kept intact by being the most confident and smartest of the bunch. In true bard fashion he encourages everyone to try their best and adapt to every situation. His core strength is intelligence and positivity. He does everything he can to save his daughter. The movie is not super woke like other films in the past. I encourage everyone to give it a chance.

Just to chime in here, are the characters meant to be thought of as characters that you might role play as in a D&D game? If that's the case, I don't see why the woman character being stronger than a male character matters since that's just how the game works. Everyone rolls for stats and certain classes have stat boosts.
@Nihilakh4life
@Nihilakh4life Жыл бұрын
He's not the manly character because he's the bard. Anyone who knows D&D knows bards are pretty much a joke, they are super powerful but are support classes not fighters, if they try to be the hero they look like idiots. Same with the sorcerer, Super powerful class but glass cannons who can't really take a hit. Meanwhile Barbarians and druids and tanks and are designed to fight on the front line so of course they are going to do most of the killing.
@baltosstrupelos302

I'd say it's this exactly. The movie was made by people who play D&D, and it's loaded with references and the tempo of a D&D group's antics. Honor among Thieves probably felt like a bad movie to most, but it felt like a campaign (short one) for us players.

Rick Grimes is probably one of the best representations of a masculine man in media. That man has been through so much, is an unrelenting badass but also has a very deep and emotional side to him. I know I said this before, but as the mother of a boy, I'm concerned for the future of boys and the kind of male role models they'll have. No matter how progressive, boys need proper role models and it's important for them to grow up as unashamed of their masculinity as we hope girls will be as unashamed of their femininity. Masculinity is not gross or toxic. True masculinity is beautiful and natural. This is why as a comic author, I try to make my male MCs masculine in the best ways. PS: You can make a man masculine and have moments of vulnerability. Making them into weakling isn't entertaining. It's disgusting. You're basically admitting that you love writing bad on purpose. It's pathetic.

It was about the class he was compared to the female characters. He was a Bard which are meant to lead and inspire paired with a barbarian which are meant to crush and destroy people. And the Sorcerer is also a ranged fighter. Those classes aren't meant for close in your face combat most of the time. There are subclasses that can change that but the movie isn't as indepth as that. I think the male characters were all really good and served as good role models. The main man showed that you don't have to be the guy killing everything to be a great leader and a great father

Dude, you know what's actually a perfect example of a female led piece of entertainment? The animated TV show Arcane. It's what most people would call "woke" but done right. It's basically female led cuz you have the two sisters being the co-protagonists, Vi and Jinx, you have Sevika, you have Caitlyn, you have Mel, and they're all badass in their own completely different ways, but the great part is, that it doesn't come at the expense of the male characters and it doesn't feel forced in the slightest, they are just as badass and strong characters, all the characters are simply depicted as if they where real humans being thrown in the circumstances that the show offers. And guess what the results of doing something right got them! Countless awards (seriously, I've lost count of how many awards Arcane has won), being universally acclaimed by both critics and audience (still holding to this day at the moment of writing, a 100% score from critics and a 96% score from the audience on RT, so basically universally acclaimed to be perfect, very much a unique occurrence) and being, overall, one of the best TV shows ever made. Moral of the story is, just do what Arcane is doing, is that so hard of a concept to grasp?!
@_Jay_Maker_

People are just tired of female leads, but they're too afraid to say it. Female leads aren't bad as long as a story can make them work, but when that's very nearly _all you're ever seeing_ to the point where you deliberately need to go back to older media just to get a fix for something that feels "normal" - like realistic female leads from older films, for example, not just male ones - there's an obvious problem. The creative world needs to transform, but that will only happen when society does. You also apparently put way more stock into "critics" and Rotten Tomatoes than you probably should.

TBF, the Super Mario Bros Movie is portrayed as if the characters are meeting each other for the first time, so for Luigi and Peach's role to be flipped actually helps since it would seem strange for Mario to want to rescue a random stranger. Having him rescue his brother gives him a more personal stake in the Mushroom Kingdom's affairs while simultaneously giving him the time to build up his relationship with Peach. It could also go on to explain why the toads would only ever see Luigi as Mario's uninteresting brother, despite him being just as super as Mario (whenever he does set his fears aside that is) and opens up a huge opportunity for Luigi’s character arc in a sequel, him realizing that he is in Mario's shadow and confronting his feelings about it, that is assuming that Nintendo actually cares about storytelling now.... (all of this was in the RPGs).

I watched the DnD movie and I honestly had a fun time with it. Especially if you imagine them as players getting wacky dice rolls in each scene. The men aren't weak in my opinion. One is a Bard whose main focus is to inspire his party so of course he's not gonna be physically strong, but he's still a good leader and father. And then there's the wizard who is also obviously not gonna be physically strong, but he still managed to have his time to shine.

No idea what happened between script, production, and post-production, but the final result wasn't woke. I thought it went ok. It wasn't as bad as I feared; as it turned out, the bard character was sufficiently masculine imo, and the barbarian wasn't some man-hating butch. And the group's sorcerer had a very good plot arc. Seriously, Neytiri & Jake is perfect dynamic. Husband and wife supporting eachother and fulfilling/complimenting eachother ❤ I wish there were more movies like that. Showing that man and women can both be amazing in their own way. Effeminating men for the sake of showing a strong, contrasting women is nauseating to me, it's like they don't have enough wokeness put into it. Showing strength in women shouldn't overshadow the same representation in men. Can men cry, suffer, be sensitive and make mistakes? Yes. But they also can wipe the tears, stand up and learn from mistakes to not repeat them again, growing into better, wiser and stronger character. Why would movies forcefully put overpowered women characters at expense of men who cannot do anything themselves? Woke trash completily overshadows the reality for the sake of satisfying masses, but doing it, they straight up throw that reality outta the window... Characters like Reeves' samurai Kai and Kikuchi's witch Muzuki from "47 Ronin", like original "Conan The Barbarian" Conan and Valerie... We don't see them anymore and we definetily should. Different types of strength, confidence, wisdom, but also their own weaknesses and faults, present in different form in both men and women, and as You said potraying them as persons, not only men and women. Modern movies get this $hit the worst... And it feels unnatural...

You can see many moments where she shows a lot of care and kindness towards her party and the male lead's daughter. The interaction she had with her ex-husband also shows that the character had a lot more emotional maturity than the average Mary-Sue of the MCU. It's kind of like the same thing I felt about Vi and Sevika in Arcane, as long as the character has their own unique identity and doesn't reek of wokeism it usually turns out pretty good.

To be honest, I liked the film - a solid 7.5 out of 10. They didn't cast Pine as a "fighter," but more as a thief - the "idea guy." We all know the "idea guy." They did a good job developing the Magic User's story, and in the end he was badder ass than the druid or the female fighter, even though he remained physically a "wimp." That the fighter and the druid were "front line" because of their physical abilities, the tank and the dps characters are ALWAYS front line. It's a FANTASY - not a documentary on the battle prowess of women. As for "badass men," the Paladin puts them all to shame at one point without really trying.

The thing is Michelle Rodriguez didn't need to grow her armpit hair and adopt more dude mannerisms to sell herself as a badass. A lot of us already thought she was a badass. I saw her in fast and the furious. She was cool. Same thing in Machete. And even in the first avatar movie. She was the strong woman before it became a cliche. And yet she never In those roles had two emasculate any of her male counterparts. Vin Diesel also looked badass.

In D&D they luckily cut out the scene when the plan maker is trying to cut his hand bindings on the dull stairs. If his skill is making plans, having him do something so stupid undermines the movie. With scenes like that gone it turned out to be a pretty good movie. They made the woman bruiser kind of stupid in a funny way by having her speak the plain truth even when that was a bad idea. I think they avoided the worst of the wokeness. I also liked how they highlighted how magic could not solve every problem.

Fantastic discussion. Allow me to share my perspective as a woman. I don’t like this modern day feminism, where men are being made to feel lesser than women. This isn’t equality, when you have to put down one group over another. Maybe it’s how I was raised, but generally I like the traditional gender roles; where we have manly men, feminine women, and both parties work together to reach a common goal, treating each other with respect, love, and general well being. That’s how it’s supposed to be, we’re a team, we’re supposed to get along and cooperate.

It's funny you mentioned RE4R because it occurred to me playing through the game that Ashley Graham kind of has the ultimate female fantasy in the form of getting paired with the world's sexiest badass man who puts himself between her and danger constantly, resues her when threatened, and princess carries her when she drops from a high ledge. She may have been more of a living MacGuffin in the original game, but she really does get the best deal of any Resident Evil character. I don't think she was INTENTIONALLY designed as a female audience insert, but I do wonder why we don't see that kind of rescue fantasy anymore- it kind of disappeared along with the strong male lead, and I really feel that RE4R shows us it really shouldn't have to if you're putting careful thought into why the female lead is underpowered and why that's not a bad thing at all. You can make a character physically weak without making them emotionally and/or intellectually weak.

I watched the movie yesterday and both me and my friends really liked it!! It feels like a dnd campaign between friends made into a movie. It's not a serious fantasy movie at ALL. And although Holga does a lot of fighting (she is a warrior/barbarian) all the characters do sth during the movie. None of us though that the male characters were put on a second plane, compared to the female ones, and we ourselves have stopped watching other shows because of the wokeness crap. We didn't really notice anything out of the ordinary. Pine's character, although he is not the one fighting all the time, is a great party leader (he is supposed to be a Bard, but with touches of warrior. He does do some fighting at some point). And he and the other male of the group, the struggling Sorcerer, have a nice development during the movie, he encourages him and reassures him to be more confident and improve, which he does. Idk, I liked all the characters and relationships between them. I didn't feel like there was much wokeness involved. I'm sure there was sth, but I wasn't in your face kinda wokeness I guess. There is a lot of good comedy in the movie, even fat jokes. Personally I really liked it, and it feels like there could be at least a sequel. And I would really like that!

You liked it because you're a D&D fan and they actually did a decent job catching the essence of a D&D campaign. Heck Chris pine's character was decently written. Doesn't change the fact that the male characters were clowns they were clearly tearing down the two male leads to prop up the woman. I think it held the film back and definitely hurt my enjoyment. If it was just one of the male leads I would have been fine with but both? Definitely not the right move.

I can understand why some people may think the male characters are emasculated in DnD. The only way they would get it is if the watchers are familiar with DnD. DnD is a franchise that you can do a lot with, where if a man takes on a more backseat role and a woman is a fighter, we don’t blink an eye because we’ve either created characters like that for our games, or someone else has, so this doesn’t feel as weird to us. Overall, a very entertaining movie that I would totally watch again.

It's always a treat whenever your videos come out; now they became a must watch minutes after release :) John wick is amazing! I can easily say as a woman (as some friends of mine would say, a strong woman who can kick ass)I LOVE men like Wick and Redfield who are strong, kick ass, but don't forget their humanity and still show that they have feelings and a heart. That's a big reason why Marvel is failing too; nerdy women want to see strong male superheroes (shirts off is nice too) not Mary Sue's who preach and have no growth. Resi 4 is AMAZING and yet that series, as you said, has great females like Claire, who maintained her flintiness in the remake and nurture. The only beef I have is that Jill in the remake is more reflective of the "modern strong woman" unlike the first game where we saw her fears and worries but yet she buckled up and confronted the situation she was in. in the remake they even had Ashley be stronger but still she maintains vulnerability and is scared as anyone would. And yes, STOP RUINING MEN!

"Why can't a woman be badass and yet revel in her feminine side?" Uh... because it's a contradiction? A "strong female character" is not strong the same way a "strong male character" is. My favorite example is "Gone with the Wind". You have FIVE strong female leads, and not one of them ever throws a punch, and the one time one of them fires a gun, she shuts her eyes. Scarlett Melanie Mammy Belle and Mrs O'Hara were all strong female characters in their own way without giving up their femininity or pretending to be men. Scarlett rebuilt the family home and fortune after its destruction at the hands of the U.S. Learning capitalism and beating the yankees at their own game. Melanie was the moral compass of the extended family. She was bad ass when she, very calmly and quietly told India that if she didn't stop badmouthing Scarlett she would be toss out of her home. Melanie also stood up to public judgement when she offered to befriend Belle Watling, who herself knew she wasn't "fit" to associate with Melanie's high-society. Mammy, who was the moral and emotional support of Scarlett's family. Lacking Mrs O'Hara's power, being a slave and then a servant ex-slave, Mammy nevertheless stood up for what she believed was right; "It ain't fittin', it just ain't fittin'!" Belle, who ran a house of ill repute and was in love with Rhett herself, chose to send her child off to school where he wouldn't be subject to the taint of his mother's profession. She used her influence multiple times to save Southerners, particularly Rhett and Scarlett, from the yankees, during the war and during "Reconstruction". And Mrs O'Hara, whose morality caused her to help deliver the bastard child of lowlife and subsequently caused her to convince her husband to fire that same lowlife. Whose morality caused her death by disease by caring for "white trash" when they were ill. These are all strong women, strong in womanly ways, and not one of them threw a punch, chewed tobacco, or grabbed their crotch like a man. I'm sick to death of people asserting that women _who act like men_ are "strong women"... no, they're masculine women. Not the same thing.

There's also the fact that since this is supposed to be "the beginning", it makes sense for Luigi and Peach to have their roles swapped since Mario saving Peach would be very "out of the box" for someone who's never met nor engaged with her. Saving his brother gives Mario a proper motivation while getting to know Peach and her kingdom well enough by the end of the story to have an emotional attachment to them for his future endeavors. It would also explain why the toads would only ever see Luigi as Mario's uninteresting brother, despite him being obviously just as super as Mario (whenever he does set his fears aside that is) and opens up a huge opportunity for Luigi’s character arc in a sequel, him having trouble in training and realizing that he is in Mario's shadow and confronting his feelings about it, that is assuming that Nintendo actually cares about storytelling now.... (all of this was in the RPGs. I won't forget).

I saw the Dungeons and Dragons movie yesterday and it was a really good movie. The male lead grew as a person and came to accept the fault of his past behavior and he worked to redeem himself in his daughter’s eyes. You also have the other male character, a sorcerer who overcomes his past and his own fears of his powers. There’s also a lot of teamwork between all the characters that fits their roles in a D&D party. It’s not John Wick but making it that way betrays the franchise.

Is this really the case? I can see how emasculating a man can give room for character development, but if its not done in a way that allows the character to grow properly, then its just a negative meant to demean others. Likewise, a character does not have to be some frontline fighter to be great either. Sometimes they can bring other things to the group like brains or finesse. I'll watch the movie if these things are true, but i'm not touching it if the men are emasculated just for shits and giggles, and have no positive traits to admire.

@@BroBomba I don’t want to spoil it but the Bard talks about how it wasn’t his fault, it was the fault of other people and then, slowly, realizes he was at fault for the events that led to his downfall. It’s an actual character arc, something I haven’t seen Hollywood do in some time and no, admitting to your faults and growing at a person isn’t “Cuck” behavior or “Woke.” We used to call it “Growing as a person” One criticism I would levy against the film is the women don’t really grow. The shape shifter talks about hating humans because they lie and betray and the female barbarian isn’t fully over her ex and is bitter about him moving on but both of their arcs are shoved off for the men’s stories and not really addressed outside of small segments at the very end.

@@KeavyGoesLive Well, I am going to guess its because of how they described the characters in this current day and age. Maybe that was not their intent, but Its not really a surprising reaction. Its also somewhat of a concern that the female characters were written in a stereotypical way for Hollywood; no real flaws or at least ones that need to be addressed which implies that they're good and all, but the men are flawed and need to improve. You also have to ask why they apparently only have issues with men being unchallenged as per their own words. It kind of implies that men need to earn their worth while women are handed it free of charge. That's just my speculation on why people feel the way they do. It's going to shoot the studio in the foot, however, because people like the Hero's Journey and how it helps them connect with the individual in question. Captain Marvel showed that no one like a Mary Sue, even if they're strong and cool.

Wokeness has changed many things that made great movies great and styled. Nerfing masculine characters or removing so called "toxic masculinity" from them was one of many. Other I could see was removing sexyness/seduction/female beauty of female characters because to them; both "objectified" women. Another one was "humanize" villains, their actions are not to be condemned but understood or justified(even though it is what happens in real life, this trope ruins many villains, story lines and confuses the audience).

I don't even mind if a man is treated as a comic relief or a bit clumsy or fearful of the challenge. But what's important is that there's an element of growth, of development, to have the guy realize his potential and save the day, while at the same time not being a brick wall of personality. Jackie Chan movies are popular because they place Jackie in all sorts of wacky scenarios with tons of obstacles to disrupt his martial arts, but he still adapts and whoops ass. Hi-Fu Rush is a massive success because the protagonist is jovial and not taken much seriously (from what I've seen), but he still rises to the occasion. Leon Kennedy is a goofball that hides his trauma behind quips and sarcasm, yet he's as willing to go the extra mile to save Ashley as he is accepting help from her or Ada when he's unable to progress by himself. And prettiness? I really don't mind if a guy is beautiful, his values should be what makes him manly. Grifith from Berserk is a villain and a half, but his personality is defined with steadfast ambition towards his goals, which he strives for with elegant swordplay and ruthless and cunning strategy. This makes him a perfect parallel to Guts, a stoic, rough and hulking manly man, who fights mainly on raw power and instinct, yet struggles to find a goal in his life. His lack of ambition naturally makes him gravitate to Grifith's manliness, while Guts' no-nonsense attitude attracts Grifith to HIS manliness, both being challenged when they have to step into each other's shoes, of Guts venturing to pursue a larger than life dream and Grifith to be "abandoned" by someone he trusts.

Have you even seed the D&D movie? The bard is a great character because he's relatable, he has a charismatic personality, he has his own agenda (he IS the main character), he has character growth, he isn't weak in any sense (yes, even in physical, he pushes away the barbarian lady from the danger, stands in her place to stop/slow down the monster that was about to kill her. How's that for emasculating?) It was interesting to look at his character because he is not bland and not one-sided. Unlike John Wick, who is essentially a walking weapon for fun action scenes and nothing more to it. I'm not saying it's bad, it's just wrong of you to compare those two characters because they're not supposed to be alike, and people go to see those movies for different reasons. I've watched D&D for a nice fantasy story, interesting characters, humor, references to the game it's based on. I've got all I wanted and more. I've watched John Wick for awesome action scenes (and yes, in this case less "character" more action IS better) and I'm very much satisfied with it. But going back to D&D. I'm 99% sure you haven't seen the movie itself. If you had, you wouldn't call another male character in the group (the mage) "weak" because that's just incorrect. He's not physically strong (like the bard isn't) but his battle strength is greater than any warrior's, which is why they only get him to fight another wizard cause if he were to fight the barbarian girl, he'd just destroy her. And he also grows throughout the journey and overcomes his fears, his weaknesses. The barbarian lady is physically strong and buff obviously because she's a literal barbarian. It's how she lives, how she fights. It would make zero sense to have a barbarian without muscles "using her femininity" as you put it, she wouldn't be able to exist in that setting (she would've had a different class to put it in D&D game terms). And btw there was a badass physically "strong" paladin male character. You would know if you've watched the movie. It's also so limiting to call a character "strong" based purely on their physical/combat skills, as you seem to do. Strong character is not one who can kick ass but who can overcome their fears, admit their flaws and become a better person. Which btw both the bard and the mage guys in D&D movie do. Alas, ofc D&D won't make great money compared to JW, at least because it's an adaptation of board game system, not even a videogame. And while it has its audience, it's obviously smaller than a mindless simple action of a guy shooting his way through people. Putting it on some delusions about "emasculation" is just not logical. I suggest you watch the movie before judging it based on some articles about smth someone said (cause who cares what they say, we judge the end result, which is the movie).

I liked Rodriguez's character in D&D because she fit with the game's design. Does she need to be strong but feminine? No, because there are other characters that already fill the role. There's a reason why quest parties aren't all barbarians, or wizards, or archers. John Wick and Avatar are NOT D&D. Also, the men in D&D aren't portrayed as weak. They are portrayed to fit the role and you're not going to see a thief (Pine) subvert the role of the barbarian (Rodriguez) because what would be the point in having all these characters if they're all going to have the same traits and personalities? Not every strong female needs to also be feminine. You should probably watch D&D before judging it by the trailers.

To be fair in Avatar, his wife is more badass for a number of reasonable reasons, being naturally more in tune with traditional combat as well as growing up with her body as opposed to having to adapt to it, so he has reasons to turn to her without emasculating himself and she has reasons to be as proficient with everything but human weapons and better with almost everything but combat.

funny enough, this movie is perfect. People who think the male lead has been emasculated have never played DnD. The main character is a bard, so it would be kind of idiotic that a bard would be a powerful, driving force of strength. What makes his character special has nothing to do with strength, but everything to do with emotion, which is what a Bard is supposed to do. He inspires everyone around him but he doesn't have to be some ass kicking badass to do it. The characters each person plays in the movie is true to what the character they represent would do while also providing an emotional story behind it.
