Why are Irishmen considered sexy when they leave Ireland and utterly useless when they stay at home. Comedian Jarlath Regan thinks he has the answer in this segment from his most recent standup special "Notions Eleven". Filmed live in Vicar Street, the show was intended to tour but a little pandemic got in the way. Now you can enjoy the whole thing for free on his KZfaq channel. Please like, share, subscribe and ding the bell for notifications of his next weekly stand-up video.
For access to all Jarlath's stuff including his podcasts all about the Irish abroad and other standup specials visit Patreon.com/irishmanabroad.

If you have an Irish accent here in Boston, you’re basically invincible. It was the same with the Aussie accent. It’s still a big turn on here, but back in the Crocodile Dundee/Men at Work days you were invincible lol
@kate122579
@kate122579 Жыл бұрын
Can confirm. Boston is so heavy with the obsession over our own Irish ancestry that when we women encounter a real live Irishman we absolutely lose it. It's like the pinnacle of clout. Which is completely absurd because we KNEW our grandfathers and they were absolute nonsense and we watched our grandmothers purse their lips and quietly run the show with masterfully dispensed guilt and an undercut that our grandfathers were completely oblivious to. The Irish-American family dynamic here is so unhealthy... so we women want nothing more than to continue the tradition - we'd never make it with normal people. Coming across source material is jackpot.

Isn't this the truth. Works in Canada too. Aussies, Irish, Scots, the Brits.. I was at a pub the other day with a Scottish pal who is pushing 60 and not on the light side. Within seconds the two 20 something girls next to us were flirting with him without him saying so much as "What are the drink specials for tonight?".. to the bartender. Sadly, I suspect Canadians (maybe Americans too?) do not find the same reception beyond our borders.

I’m always surprised by how much people from certain parts of Ireland sound like they’re from Wisconsin. I was actually a bit disappointed when I first got to Ireland and nobody seemed to have an Irish accent, but I also noticed the phenomenon in parts of Germany, and most of the early settlers in my part of Wisconsin were German and Irish, so I guess it’s not that surprising. Still weird.

There are definitely parts of Ireland where people try to hide their natural accent and put on a fake neutral "accent". Irish women are particularly bad: clahds for clouds, sath for South, sacond bast for second best, dafinately for definitely etc. It's some form of inferiority complex I reckon esp when people move to Dublin.

@@ranica47 I’ve only been to County Cork, so I’m not the best judge, but it’s definitely true that accents change when one moves. I’m from Wisconsin but have lived in Chicago and in Colorado (and I pick up accents pretty quickly), and I pronounce words differently depending on which way I like saying them best. For instance, I like to say “melk” instead of “milk,” which is Chicago style, and I say “Dinver” instead of “Denver,” because it’s the way it’s usually pronounced in Colorado. It’s fun to be eclectic.

I needed information about irish funeral customs so I interviewed Father Paddy (yes his real name). There are small towns here where the Catholics are not buried in the same cemetaries as the protestants and asked him was ireland like that. And he replied they didnt really have that issue. I says oh they bury them together? How progressive! he says no there arent any protestants left alive. They have all died. You know where my mind went and this priest is acting like it was necessary.

Ah, yes, the accent. I'm mostly Irish in the US. The accent is to die for. But the thing is we know you are going home to Mammie, and we don't have to take care of you. Bless that Irish passport.

You could do the same routine in Scotland, as The Big Yin is won't to say, "We're very similar" Worked all over, it was always easier to get a second date, never mind a first, anywhere outside Scotland! I couldn't of bought a Snake-bite for the middens mate! and be blown out! But West Berlin?, I was in a relationship with a six-two blue eyed blonde, (I'm five-ten), should've been a super model! I stopped going home from further afield. Stayed in Europe for My leave. Go home?, and not get the ugly sisters ugly sister? Or go to any major European City and keep checking in mirrors to see if I'd had cosmetic surgery without knowing about it. 👍❤️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿!

Can’t argue with ya Jarlath, a Dublin accent is totally the sexist accent in the world, French second, Italian third.

As an American, yes, I like your accent, but you folks don't circumcise, do you?

We don’t cut our noses off either. It’s called genital mutilation.

No, No genital mutilation. That a bonus. Circumcised men are less sensittive, so often worse lovers in my experience.

Comedy is subjective but you're the only one in the comments who didn't enjoy it. That probably says more about you than Jarlath.....don't you think? 🙄
