Wong Kar-wai is without a doubt the most acclaimed director to ever come out of Hong Kong. In this video I intend to provide an introduction to his work through looking at how his aesthetic developed over his first five films.
I’ve designed this video to be as accessible as possible, so whether you’re already familiar with his work, or had never even heard of his name until now, why not watch and learn a thing or two about one of Asia’s most distinctive directors.
Thank you for watching this video, I hope you enjoy it. This is my first video essay so I appreciate any feedback you may have, as I am eager to improve in any way I can. Thank you to Archer Green for letting me use his channel as an outlet. I've been eager to try my hand at making a video for a while now so I really appreciate it.
I hope to see you next time, where I will delve further into Kar-wai’s career.

Really loved this video. This year I’ve gotten into a lot of Hong Kong Cinema but more particularly Wong Kar Wai. Really love his distinct filmography

its funny to me how Ashes of Time was supposed to be this big commercial film and the movie he shot while taking a break from it is considered one of the best movies ever made and Ashes of Time is basically forgotten

True that. Chungking Express is one of my favourite films ever but even I could barely make it through Ashes of Time; it's probably his weakest film (along with My Blueberry Nights). I think Ashes of Time suffers in particular as it is inscrutable to Western audiences, particularly those who are not familiar with wuxia. My Blueberry Nights arguably has the opposite problem; it's too Western, to the point where it does not feel all that distinct or memorable.

@@wtcben yeah I had a film professor who loved Wong Kar-wai and knew I did too so he offered me his DVD of My Blueberry Nights because he said it was so awful he never wanted to see it again lol

Appreciate the hard work on one of my fav directors of all time but this reads more like a timeline rather than a study. More technical details are not discussed, i.e specific type of camera used, lighting techniques, staging, editing, etc. And what about the use of color in his movies, composition, and locations would all help to understand wong kar wai visual style throughout the years

I totally agree with you, and I was the one who made the video. This is my first video essay so I kept it relatively simple as I had never written or edited this kind of thing before. I'm planning on making the follow-up a bit more in-depth so will take all of these things into account. I appreciate the feedback so much, I'm glad that you enjoyed it.
