This is my introduction to a new series on world-building and storytelling in narrative and interactive fiction. I think the creative side of making things is just as important as the technical, and it's something that has to be practiced. If you like this, then I post new videos every weekend!
I was hoping I could do these on "off weeks" between coding videos, but this took way longer to write for and draw than many of my technical videos! Definitely not a "break". I may try doing shorter uploads (ie: 5 - 7 minutes instead of 10 - 15 minutes) to make sure things don't get too tangential and rambly. Anyway, we'll see how this goes for the next few weeks :)

I thought pretty hard about a game world concept, and came up with: A world where there was some kind of apocalypse AGES ago, and humans are just kind of left building little societies in the ruins of the old world. Since farming isn't possible any more due to the world just being a desert, they rely on meat to survive. But it's been so long that animals aside from humans have all basically become extinct, so people start eating each other. Then two classes of people develop, the "normal" people, and the "cattle". The normal people farm the cattle for food, and the cattle's only job is basically to be meat. You play as a cattle person, who escapes into the desert and has to survive by themselves. Along the way, you find something amazing, seeds. Your quest is then to find one of the few remaining areas of fertile soil in the world so you can grow the seeds and kick off the reintroduction of vegetation. Along the way you would have to contend with your "owners" trying to track you down, people trying to "poach" you stuff like that. You can't tell anyone you have the seeds, or what they are because nobody would recognise them as seeds, and cattle people are mute and know no language. Then I realized that was basically Fist of the North Star mashed together with Oddworld XD

You get abducted by aliens, and put in an intergalactic zoo. They don't seem particularly nefarious. They also don't expect you to be smarter than the earth-samples they put you in with. The challenge? Finding a way out of the zoo and a way back to planet earth. This would all be a click and point adventure game, with emphasis on humor.

I know it's quite a bit past this, but gosh darn-it I don't care. *Title*: Hongerwinter *Setting*: The Netherlands, 1944 - 1945 (during the Dutch famine) *Premise*: A wounded German deserter meets a starving Dutch girl. Reluctantly, they decide to help each other in the name of survival, facing a brutal environment and difficult language barriers (they must learn to communicate and cooperate despite speaking different languages). *Protagonist*: Adrie, a free-spirited and rebellious Dutch teenager with minimal survival skills, but a hardy determination and a kind soul. *Deuteragonist*: Oskar, a guilt-stricken German soldier who deserted his comrades and ended up badly wounded. Has good intuition, but is a stranger to the Dutch environment. *Conflict*: The eponymous Hongerwinter (_"Hunger Winter"_). Adrie and Oskar face scarce resources, unforgiving cold, Nazi occupation, and animosity from the starving Dutch people.

Challenge time then huh? I don't often give myself the chance to be as creative as I should be because I instead try dissecting everything I see and blending it into an ultimate pinnacle of perfection! Years later and nothing has come of it. This is why done is better than perfect. So lets give this a try. How's about there is a world where people have learned how to bottle up their emotions before they experience them and have the option to either feel them or sell them to others for food, money etc. Because of this people have the choice to prioritize rationally selling the unnecessary for greater resources or experiencing them and making life more meaningful/worthwhile by being a little more human.

So this is a good topic, I've actually got aphantasia (I don't have a traditional imagination) so world building is SO important for me otherwise I don't get immersed, and gluing my eyes to a screen in VR doesn't do it either. Sadly as you've said it's often the most neglected and as a result maybe two or three games really captivated me to the point of investment. So here's mine, a planet covered in vicious vines, and creatures that prey on anything that lives upon them, in this world to survive you gotta keep moving, and as with most environments humans have learned to live here. How? Simple, a steam engine with chainsaw blade wheels, the entire population of the planet lives aboard this massively long train fighting off the smaller creatures that are born from the vines, and maintaining the engine, using the freshly cut vines to power it. It'd be a chaotic mix of Metal Slug and an on-rails (quite literally) shooter, and perhaps a bit of a maintenance sim as you try to keep the train going while fighting off the vicious local wildlife with a goal to ultimately make it fit for normal human settlement.

I'm working on a c# console game at the moment and here is its story: The village you live in is attacked by an evil dragon once every three hundred days. In order to stop the dragon many people go on journeys to find its hiding place so that they can kill it while it sleeps. You are one of those brave people. On your journey you fight monsters and other people who have gone insane in their search of the dragon. You also find diary pages of another adventurer who's like you. The gimmick of the game is that you can steal the monsters abilities and make them your own. When you reach the dragon's lair it is revealed to you that the person whose diary pages you've been reading has killed the dragon but for some reason that caused him to transform into a dragon. The final battle starts and the end of the story is based on that final battle. If you try to take one of the dragon's abilities, you will eventually turn into the new dragon. If you don't, you win and the village you came from is finally at peace. It's kinda lame and pretty unoriginal but I think it'll do for my first game. Most of my inspiration for this game came from pokemon, undertale and OFF(even though I don't think you could tell that just from the story). P.S. Love you vids!

I know it doesn't quite fit (and I'm a little late) but it might be of interest to some. The game I've been working on is set in 1507 in the Republic of Venice. It's a RPG, where the player takes the role of a Captain leading a Company of 100 men trough the war of the league of Cambrai,. Although personal conflicts are for obvious reasons made up, the grand battles along the way are actual history. In this bloody conflict monarchs turned on each other for minor reasons and the player has to choose whether he does all he can to help is homeland survive the endless and pointless war, or he decides to become a mercenary and make the best for himself out of it.

Ok so, i'm working on a game engine right now to create the world that me and a friend imagined (sorry for bad english) : During the 21th century, human nanotechnology made so much progress it could be used for medical purpose. nanobots were the pride of humanity, and using this technology, humans improved by far their life duration. Somehow, one day, Plaguebot, a weapon nanobot escaped from control after a technical issue, leading to a real disaster. On earth, it killed more than 75% of the living population by infecting the body and destroying it. Because Plaguebot was very relying on humans to replicate itself and to get energy to "survive", humanity decided to escape Earth in a great spaceship and to wait until Earth is freed from this threat. The purge has not ended yet. Because of the lack of resources, humans had to sacrifice again, and they decided to "evolve" somehow into cyborgs to reduce their energy needs, replacing their vital fluids by new nanobots that could sustain organs efficiently with different type of food. During the last ten years, issues have multiplied over the great spaceship, anouncing the end of the safe times : Humanity has to come back to Earth in order to survive. You are a ZX64, the last scout bot made by Nano corp. Dropped randomly on Earth, your mission is to prepare the return of the humans on the planet, by setting up basements and infrastructures. You priority is to gather informations about Plaguebot and everything surrounding you. We don't know how much Earth changed since we left 189 years ago. Some rare humans decided not to come on the great Spaceship, so a side mission is to find what happened to them, and try to establish contact with them. The Commander. This world is btw a post apocalyptic setup, it's goign to be top-bottom and the character is a robot that will be able to change it's body (equipment) to specialize into some jobs. the idea is to make a multiplayer thing where people would help each other in order to survive : one equips to kill ennemies, another is designed to gather resources, and both go on mission in a dangerous zone where tons of monsters lurk in order to fullfill their survival needs.

I've always wanted to make an action/RPG with a mixture of fantasy/sci-fi, but set in the real world. Here's the plot: The game is set in a fantasy world, but much later in the future. Most fantasy creatures have died off, except for a few here and there, but they all live in isolated areas, away from society. The game itself follows a group of high school mistfits and oddballs, each with their own unique abilities. Ones "blacksmith", he's really invested in history and war and spends a lot of his time in class drawings weapons in his notebook and making makeshift swords and guns at home. The other one is the other guys best friend: he's a mad scientist who also has a love of creation, but more science-fiction type weapons, instead of medieval weapons, he's sort of the defense guy of the group. He builds machines, turrets, and guns to use against enemies and bosses. The other one is a free-spirited, always happy girl who is also an outcast, but she could care less. She kinda the Tracer of the group. She moves quick, and is good at flanking enemies. She also very artistic and loves writing. Then there is the tank of the group, he's a jock, but doesn't really like hanging out with the cool kids, mainly because he finds them boring. He uses his football skills and his giant axe he got from his Dad to fight enemies. The woman also has a sister, she a rather young woman, about 9 who's really good at hacking, she's the healer of the group. Then finally, there's the new kid, who you don't meet at first, but later do. He's a really good trouble maker and thief, which make him good at sneaking up behind enemies. Well, this group of loners are hired by a strange, underground rebellion who are trying to fight back a strange, otherworldly force that's been invading Michigan (where the game is set.) Together, they start a journey across Michigan to fight back this evil force, while at the same time battling other strange things that are scattered across this world. The gameplay is obviously an action RPG, but with shooter elements as well. The game I intend to be very challenging and difficult, but rewarding, similar to Dark Souls. Every character has his/her own abilities and different way of playing. The game is open ended, but not open worlded, there are plenty of secrets to fill the gap with all the lore in the game. Hope you like my idea and thanks for reading! P.S. Sorry if the grammar is a little fucked, I'm typing this on my tablet.

I wrote a screenplay for an anime pilot that I've wanted to turn into a game at some point down the line. Here goes: Working Title: Soulstry Setting: With an inverted take on the Fullmetal Alchemist universe, the world is one in which the creation of new souls is the very base form of human technology. To be precise, ideas concentrated in the mind can quite literally be breathed into a spiritual manifestation, a soul given ethereal form from one's own soul and mind (can be thought of as the power source for manifesting being one's soul, the factory being one's mind, and the blueprint being one's idea). One simply concentrates on an idea, and through willing it, breathes out an aura that gathers and culminates in a spirit's ethereal form (particle effects, yay). Human civilization developed simply with a limited understanding of Soulstry. At first, people only knew how to evoke simple spirits, non-sentient ones, until one person tried creating a spirit that's ethereal form was bonded to their own body, in essence having a spirit share the mind and body with the human. Spirits evoked in this way shared the intelligence and emotional capacity of their human hosts, and, like a catalyst, these "Shamans" launched humanity into a new age of species-wide evolution. New species of non-humans of all kinds rapidly spread as the oldest Shamans became "pure", bonding into a singular consciousness and forming new races entirely. One day, a human driven mad with grief from a terrible accident became a Shaman of Death, completely submitting themselves and becoming the first ever Avatar: a spirit with full control over its host. This Avatar began annihilating the countryside, consuming whole populations and nearly decimating the surrounding country, until Meldrick Zindler, a human whose wife had been taken by Death, invented the Soulcore, a device that could seal a spirit and control its power, and used it to defeat the Avatar. Out of this catastrophic event was born Rahz, a nation of people with an unrivaled animosity towards spirits. In a rallying cry that sweeps the country, Zindler forms a new military-focused, vigorous Fascist state, a political entity that treats spirits as deadly creatures, and applies to every citizen a Mind's Eye crystal on their forehead that hinders their ability to have terribly negative thoughts that might give rise to uncontrollable and/or deadly spirits. Protagonist(s): Avalyn Zindler, Meldrick's daughter, grows up believing in Rahz and the danger of spirits. She enters the military academy along with everyone else her age, excels, graduates, and is set to become a powerful agent for Rahz's ongoing war with the surrounding spirit-friendly nations. That is, until one day a Shaman named Verita becomes a prisoner and escapes with Avalyn in pursuit. A powerful spirit interrupts and magically makes Avalyn hyper-sensitive the spirits and tasks Verita with guiding Avalyn for the coming conflict. Avalyn can suddenly and acutely feel the suffering of the spirits in Rahz's Soulcore-based technology. Unable to find a cure locally, and becoming desperate, she flees the city with the enemy Verita, and seeks help and understanding from the spirit-friendly land of Quincy. Believing her kidnapped, her older brother follows them in pursuit to bring back the nation's pseudo-princess. Conflict: Avalyn hates spirits, but must learn to understand and use them. Verita hates Avalyn due to her family's demise at the hand of the Rahzians. There is an ongoing conflict between Rahz and Quincy that is escalating over time. Avalyn seeks a cure to her hyper-sensitivity, but in the process she must undergo immense change and come to terms with her loyalties and destiny.

Dear Happy cat, ive just started game development in sfml after learning c++ for about two years now and im interested in programming a birds eye view 2d game that should resemble some thing like dwarf fortress but with sprites instead of ASCI characters. I was wondering if you could do a video on algorithms for such a thing, Ive looked every where but i cant find any good explanations or even books that show how to generate random terrain, Ive searched it up and the most common algorithm Ive come across is perlin noise (used in dwarf fortress) and was wondering if you could cover that (or any algorithm in general) and how you would go about creating it including the math etc. Thanks. :D

one I had been working on is for a setting I plan to make many stories in. the world is an earth-like planet, and we're focused on just a western subcontinent in the northern hemisphere of the planet. nobody on this world remembers history past the last thousand years or so, but it is well known that there used to be one or more magnificent civilizations that were highly technologically advanced. so people are currently living in a sort of post-apocalyptic second renaissance with an increased interest in archaeology as companies hire heroes to help the unearth and reverse-engineer the lost tech of the forgotten old-world. magic exists on this planet, as is pretty powerful, but also physically and mentally draining, so it is just considered another technology and less efficient than any mundane method of doing the same thing. it's typically only practiced by people seeking a fast and dirty solution, or those who are interested in it for academic reasons. anyway, in this world, a prominent magocratic kingdom ruled by a wizarding family is becoming the main hub of research of magic, science, and technology, as well as the best-known place to hire mercenaries and adventurers to take on quests. but it is the royal family who is the center of this story. the king and queen have a single heir, the young and curious Prince Twilight. now, Twilight desperately wants to learn as much about magic as he can, no matter what the source. but his parents warn him against reading or attempting to practice certain kinds of magic which they deem unnecessary and dangerous. but Twilight ignores their warnings and tries to cast powerful summoning magic, which results in his accidentally sharing his soul with a demon. now, deeply ashamed and worried what his parents would think, the young Prince sets off on his own, running away from his family and his kingdom in search of either a means of undoing his error, or to die alone away from anyone he might harm as the demon inside him slowly tempts and torments him. along the way he struggles not to go completely insane or to give in to the evil inside him, all the while evading his family's spies and servants who are looking for him.

Might as well exercise those creative muscles: A setting where the so-called "Dark Arts" of magic don't carry the same negative connotation that they do here (think "Defense Against the *Dark Arts* " from Harry Potter); instead, the "Dark Magic" of this world is more "positive" in its impact, or is simply "neutrally-aligned" at its worst. What kind of magic can be called "Dark" but still be positive? Well, think of the Taoist "yin-yang" philosophy: Darkness is calm, darkness is shade, darkness is coolness, darkness is soft. Try to build a magic system based on this concept of Darkness (and its complement, aptly named "Light Magic", based on similar Taoist yang-principles) and you have the basic settings of my pet project.

Interesting thoughts on storytelling as in novels or singleplayer games. But the only games I am interested in for years are open world MMOs, where the storytelling should be restricted to the outlines of an interesting world in which the players create the storyline themselves by their actions in the game.

For James N. Frey a Premise is like a hypothesis, that you confirm trough the story. Why is everyone defining premise diffrently? And "The dictionary defines premise as ‘A proposal from which a conclusion can be drawn. Or A proposal from which an argument is based.’ " James N. Frey gives this example for a possible premise: "Greed leads to happiness." which obviously is an weird premise. The Story is there so we can explore the premise. So basicly, none of what you say at 4:59 is a premise.

The great hall was filled by a dull and musty light, speeding through a humid yet menacing mass of air. Even though it was easily high noon and the magnificent rays of the summer sun was dancing across Blackwater Bay, the vibrant energy of the light have not breached the cold windows of the hall. The maester, standing sentry in the hall was unnerved by this. For confidence, he clutched at the Pyrite chain that he earned at the Citadel for mastering the art of manipulating views on KZfaq. He let out a deep sigh, though the melancholy sigh was shallow enough so that the king's council surrounding him did not hear it. The sigh was a sigh of longing, longing for tranquil walks in the godswood of King's Landing and the solitude of its great libraries. However, he consigned to the fact that he could not do this at the current moment, as he had more immediate buisness to attend to. His buisness sat on a giant throne, an iron throne with swords of different lengths and types from places near and far away. The swords swatted away at the light, making a blinding glare that challenged even the strongest of eyes. He did not know who ordered the throne to be made, as any books mentioning it would been burned in the numerous sacks of King's Landing due to the war hosts formed by herd mentality. Despite the glare, the short yet powerful figure stood out. The figure was wearing a stark black shirt and was sporting a great black beard. Its shiny bristles pointed outward from chin, culminating in a comprehensive point resembling a gnome's beard. "King Keemstar", his easily impressed side of his mind blurted out. At the foot of his throne, a single desperate peasant stood. His clothes were a ragged mess, everyone in the hall could tell he had spent his remaining silvers on the journey through The Roseroad. "Your Grace, i must ask you. Why did you shame the buisnessmen hailing from my village? Because of your claims, the smith in my village has been getting unwarranted and unjustified harassment, and the lords and smallfolk travelling along the Roseroad have been avoiding our valuable inn due to your absurd claims about our innkeeper. Those tales of yours aren't true! I assure you. Our smith hasn't been taking a 5 year old Braavosi girl into bed and our innkeeper is not a goat pleasurer! Since kings are the ones who are supposed to dispense justice, can you please tell me why you are bombarding these poor people with your claims?" The peasant blurted out. Although he tried as best as he can to sound calm, he failed and his voice shook and quivered. There was a tense silence in the hall, even the dust floating lazily in the air seemed to be looking on the figure on the throne at the edge of their invisible seats. "Why am i still getting hate from the likes of you!?" boomed the king on the throne, the bristles of his beard shaking along with his voice in protest. "You have obviously taken EVERYTHING i have said out of context. Maester Edward, tell this man the punishment for taking the king's word out of context" Keemstar ordered, in an even louder and crass voice. The maester stepped forward gingerly, afraid that he step on a caltrop that might anger his sovereign. "It is work in the Kush mines, My Grace. If the mines are full our friend might have to take the black." Maester Edward finally said, slightly shaken by the attitude of his king. "Send him to the dungeons. Don't forget to cut off his manhood and feed it to a goat, i'm sick of hearing this out-of-context banter" Keemstar boomed once again, concluding the affair with the peasant. Several lords in full plate armor closed around the peasant and dragged him off outside. "This session must come to my end, tell the others to wait tommorow. I need time to think", with that the inhabitants of the hall started flowing outside, following the king's order. A squire came in and brought Keemstar a large bowl of popcorn. He shooed him away and ate at his snack vigorously and with irritation. Maester Edward approached the throne, waiting for a command. Instead, the king stared out in front of him into the abyss, munching on his popcorn loudly. The great munches by the king gave the lone Maester room for thought. He remembered that this wasn't the only time the King had a hearing like this. The king's lies affected everyone, even his own Hand (The position, not his actual hand) who was poisoned for objecting to him. But then, his mind wandered over to an ordinary summer day. Vaguely, he remembered a young man on that very day. He was pleading to Keemstar to renounce absurd claims about him, but he refused. This refusal warranted a mental breakdown and the man cried and plead on the foot of the throne. He was executed on the spot, the maester could still see a remainder of the bloodstains on the floor. With this thought, Maester Edward recieved a great pang of sympathy. He remembered that he carried a knife around with him, an essential tool for manipulating views. He made a slight move to his many pockets. "Ah, Maester Edward. I'm very sorry for ignoring you" Keemstar said, his voiced was like honey, calm and sweet. His expressions were a different story, he was looking at the maester with suspicious and inquisitive eyes. It was as if he was boring in the maester's head, probing for ideas, feeling for weaknesses. "Give me your knife" Keemstar suddenly ordered. Defeated, the maester slowly slid out his knife and gave it to him. It was of valyrian steel, extremely old. Its black handle stained with the fingerprints of hundreds of years of owners slid into Keemstar's hands. "So, my good old maester. I see that you are planning to stab me right here in my throne" With this, the maester was taken aback, shocked. "I know this not because i can read minds, you have planning of my death for months now, since that young man wailed at my feet. You have manipulated many many people, my informants say, but remember this. I am better than you, i am *ALWAYS* a step ahead and you are the one being manipulated here." The speech by King prompted the clinking of mail and plate towards the old maester. "Take him away!" Keemstar ordered, as if it was routine. The guards grabbed Maester Edward in the most unceremonious of manners. "GET HIM ROOOIIIGHHTTT INTOO THE NOOOOSEEE" was the last thing he heard from the king before he was knocked out by the blunt end of a spear. Ok i'll bite. I will share one story that i don't care about because i have no faith in it. I'll still try to make a game about it once godot 3 is out due to it's extremely simplistic, low-poly and Cell-shaded design. My other stories are for myself and secret. I tremendously believe in them. They tortured my mind for years. Here is a short beginning of "Scoper". In the year 2066 The scientists at the Computer Engineering Academy, Research and Development Wing (CEARND) or (CEAR&D) of the Carnegie Mellon University, finally pierced the mysteries of the human mind, thanks to "The Scoper". A super computer that allows the operator to "scope" the mind of a subject trough a helmet scanning for brainwaves, digitize them, and interpret the data to materialize human comprehensible shapes, words... anything the mind looks like. Ten years later in 2076, a major breakthrough occurs: the Scoper now gained the ability to modify someone's mind. Thoughts, memories, emotions. Requiring materialization of a subject's mind on a local server, a "Scoper User" (You) will then "Scope" the subject's mind by materializing (Your) own mind *inside* the subject's mind, and by the same logical process, inside the local Scoper Server as well. For the sake of good will, the scientist decided to declare the prototype's first use in psychiatry... You are a therapist who's been assigned to be the world's first Scoper User. You job is to soothe the mind of your patient.... Will you do it? If so... at what cost? So what's the judgement?

You only made this statement because you have delusion in terms of religion. This is my humble request to you please study Islam. The one and only way of salvation is Islam. this life is only test from ALLAH and it will end soon and real life will start after death. The genius women like you have delusional thoughts regarding religion is very weird to be honest. If you think Islam is not good then i request you to study all religions exist in the world then you will understand IN SHAH ALLAH that only Islam teaches the right path.
