Armenia’s border with Turkey has been closed for more than three decades. So what would happen to the country’s economy if that border was opened?
CivilNet’s Mark Dovich sits down with economists Hrant Mikaelian, from the Yerevan-based Caucasus Institute and Omar Kadkoy, from the Ankara-based Economic Policy Research Foundation, to discuss.
0:00 How would opening the Turkish border impact the Armenian economy?
4:31 The importance of regional development and tourism
7:09 How realistic are fears of a flood of cheap Turkish goods?
11:53 What role could Turkey’s ongoing economic crisis play here?
15:55 Why is Turkey renewing calls for the ‘Zangezur corridor?’

As an engineering company I worked 2 times for Turkish companies, the 2 times I was not paid. My service was delivered on time and was efficient. One of them even asked me to down my price before accepting the mission, still didn’t paid. The conclusion is that I don’t work with turks, unless they pay in advance. 0 commercial ethics.

I want Turkish and Armenian reconciliation politically, socially, with media and everything else...BUT NOT ECONOMICALLY. Turkish products are too cheap and would cause Armenian domestic production to decline and be dependent on Turkey. Getting rid of Russian agreements and buying Iranian oil and gas is more important.

Economist here. There will be economic and if done carefully political benefits for both countries in opening up economically. If Armenia increases does the economic path of high value services and high value nice manufacturing it could even have a trade surplus in the relationship over time. However there are some cautions to the Armenian side I would like to highlight: i) Security: it's necessary for investments in Armenia over a certain value to be approved for economic and political security reasons. Also be careful not to be dominated by the Turkish economy which could be possible given the size differences. ii) A price equalisation mechanism to balance out prices for Turkish subsidised industries and subsidised exports so not as to negatively impact Armenian producers in these areas. eg Turkish agriculture is subsidised in certain products. Companies and sectors benefitting from Turkish dirigiste also need to be reviewed. iii) Turkey is suffering from macroeconomic instability. This is a periodic long term characteristic of the Turkish economy, Armenia needs to be aware of this. Iv) Turkey has an issue with corrupt business practices which will also require awareness, especially to not import corruption issues. Also opening up needs to fit in with EEU commitments. There is potential for benefit for both sides but caution is advised in the speed and manner of opening up.

Armenia's foreign exchange conservatism is unmatched in the region. The Dram is very stable, why would the local government give this up for a theoretical vision that's not appreciated by the general populace? Makes no sense.

The Armenian housing construction market is the biggest chunk of the economic growth engine that keeps the Dram stable. Very soon the real estate bubble will burst and the Dram will take a dive. Many other uncontrolled but predicted risky factors will affect the Dram stability.
