--- How much more powerful is a dog’s sense of smell compared to a human?
According to one estimate, dogs are 10,000-100,000 times more sensitive to smell than humans. They have about 15 times more olfactory neurons that send signals about odors to the brain. The neurons in a dog’s nose are spread out over a much larger and more convoluted area allowing them more easily decipher specific chemicals in the air.
--- Why are dog noses wet?
Dog noses secrete mucus which traps odors in the air and on the ground. When a dog licks its nose, the tongue brings those odors into the mouth allowing it to sample those smells. Dogs mostly cool themselves by panting but the mucus on their noses and sweat from their paws cool through evaporation.
--- Why do dog nostrils have slits on the side?
Dogs sniff about five times per second. The slits on the sides allows exhaled air to vent towards the sides and back. That air moving towards the back of the dog creates a low air pressure region in front of it. Air from in front of the dog rushes in to fill that low pressure region. That allows the nose to actively bring odors in from in front and keeps the exhaled air from contaminating new samples.

they're actually too excited to treat the information received from the nose, their brain is like "ok we are going to look for it with our eyes since we saw it 4 seconds ago" instead, if you just make them smell the treat and then hide it (without letting them see it at any point) no matter how excited they are they will be more likely to look for it with their nose

Fun fact; wolves are not even close to as good with their noses as dogs. Basically by teaming up humans and dogs had the opportunity to specialize in different ways while having eachother as a safety net

Dogs scent can also remind them of traumatic events. For example, when we used to bring our dog on a car ride she would get super anxious when we drive by the veterinarian office. I guess she thought we were taking her in for a visit. Their scent is amazing.

That explains a lot. Pugs are brachycephalic, like Bulldogs, Boxers, etc. They have breathing problems because of their very short snouts. They can also overheat, because their mouths don’t open as wide as, say, the German Shepherd in the video, so their panting is less efficient than a long nosed dog’s.

Thank you. This was the only video that actually explained HOW dogs track scents. Other videos merely said they were great it without any explanation. Now you should do a video on why and how every human has a distinct scent. Inquiring minds wanna know! ❤

I've noticed the good smell working dogs have compared to companion dog breeds. Like the Yorkshire Terrier (bread to hunt rats), or the Dachshund (Bread to hunt badgers); a few sniffs and are off running towards their owner. But Shitsuze, which is bread as a companion dog, seems to have to check each room to find its owner.
