Tutorial: www.how-to-repair.com/help/how...
This video will show you how to change washing machine bearings and of all repairs that can be done to a Bosch, Neff, Siemens or Balay washing machines this can be one of the most difficult, more often than not it requires a complete strip down of the washing machine.
The first thing you have to realise about a bearing change on any washing machine is that you need all the correct parts before you start and the average DIY armature will take the whole day to do this job and the assistance of a friend would be really helpful, if you're not confident in your ability to totally strip the machine and re-build it then call in a professional as they do not like taking on jobs that are already started.
There are two bearings in a Bosch, Neff, Siemens or Balay washing machines and one main seal and you will need a tub gasket.
This is what a typical Bosch, Neff, Siemens or Balay washing machine bearing kit looks like.
The main reason that washing machine bearings fail is that the main shaft seal fails, allowing water into the bearings that cause corrosion this will lead to the bearing to slowly rusts over time and eventually will collapse due to the oil or grease being washed out and will start to get very noisy on spin.

Much obliged to you. Would never have been able to do this without this video. In my case, the worry I had over a sealed drum turned out to be unfounded, but the front part of the tub had the concrete block glued to it! Removing the old bearings (or the remains of) proved a bit tricky as did fitting the new ones. I had mixed success with the makeshift bearing tool: inner bearing fitted fine but back bearing did not want to go in - very tricky. Eventually had to tap in using the old bearing case to distribute the impact. Also, metal drum spindle had corrosion on it but wet and dry did wonders for this. Delighted with the result - great sense of acheivement. Thanks!

My Siemens washing machine IQ300 (WM14Q390GB/13) was 5 years old when the bearings went due to the failure of the shaft seal. Discovering it was one of these damn sealed tub things but knowing it would only have standard commercially available bearings, after some research and I'd say big thanks to a number of KZfaq sources, I'd worked out what the bearings and seal were likely to be as they basically don't vary much over the models and years. sourced the parts and screws for around £20. Having spent a day dismantling the entire machine as per other peoples comments, I tackled the cutting open of the drum, anxious time but eventually got it done, use a pad saw with hack saw blade rather than an actual hacksaw. After substantial cleaning and descaling of the inside of the tub, heater element, hoses and drain pump etc I changed the bearings and seal easily. Tip, I changed the bearings for rubber seal (2RS) type rather than dust shield (2Z) type then liberally covered them and the space behind the seal in waterproof grease. Re-assembled every thing having drilled 18 holes for fixing screws. Silicone sealed the joint and fitted the stainless screws and nuts. let it stand over night and leak tested the next day with the tub on its back. Great, the shaft seal held well, few small joint leaks from screw areas that needed addressing with more silicone added externally. Re-assemble the whole machine and it ran sweet as a nut on test runs, quiet like new again. However, word of warning, in the case of this machine the redundant fixing bosses for screws that some manufacturers still have were not present so screws were fitted through flange surfaces, unfortunately, on a full load at last spin 1400rpm the vibration proved too much and the tub flange broke, screws pulled through and the plastic tub basically disintegrated in spectacular fashion! How gutted was I as the bearing replacement and overhaul had been successful and time consuming. So in the end a replacement machine had to be bought but hey , nothing ventured nothing gained and it was worth a try. Shame the whole machine was killed by the failure of a £6 rubber seal. The irony and silver lining is, the new machine, a Siemens WN14N200GB/14 actually has a split tub design secured by screws! Maybe at least one manufacturer has realised the down side of sealed tub design and the the life of the whole machine gets pinned the weakest component. It was an interesting project to try and repair the old one and at least in a few years, if the seal and bearings go on this one, I will be able to dis-assemble it.

thanks for the very detailed video, I'll be watching it a few more times and also referring to it whilst I do the repair. One thing I'll be doing a little differently though is not using silicone sealant, I'll be using a silicon grease instead. I will, however, be doing the water test as you have, that's a very clever idea. Thanks again !

Hi I found that it wasn't necessary to remove the heating element. It was fine to leave in place as it was on the front half of the drum which is not the part you will be working on. I also wondered if the silicone was necessary as it is not mentioned on the repair kit instructions and is not present on the original seal. Also, I wondered whether the acid released by the silicone during curing would damage the new rubber seal. It clattered a bit on first spin and I think that it was excess silicone hitting the drum. It quietened down and small pieces of silicone came out of the drain hose. I discovered one thing that could result in the shaft seal failing early. The plating on the shaft is failing where it goes through the seal. The rough surface will wear the seal. Will hope for the best... It's a time consuming job, but the good thing is that only a few tools are needed. All done and working now, so thank you so much for the video.

I followed this for my machine. Different model, but close enough to get the general idea. Re-used the o-ring (cleaned and then added some grease). Painful to get old/broken bearings out, but not too bad. Made notes and kept bolts, etc. separated by number. I did this a year ago, with a Zike bearing kit from Amazon. Not recommended. Replaced again today, this time with a Nachi kit. Hopefully it lasts a lot longer.

Very labour intensive. My Bosch bearings were shot after 20 years, so I didn't even bother fixing it. My new laundry machine is a Bosch too, and for environmental sake and because I hate ironing, I now centrifuge at only 400RPM. Then hang the laundry to dry on the attic. This also makes the bearings last longer (I expect).

Thanks for the video it was very helpful but I was in for one hell of a surprise - my seal had failed and my bearing had rusted in place - both of them - both on the outer drum and on the inner drum shaft - it was one heck of a banging. Even the seal had turned into hard plastic - had to chisel it out. Nevertheless learned a lot of new things. Here is a tip to people with similar problem - get a socket on your shaft nut, leave the nut on the shaft and bang away. Also since you are going to replace the old bearings anyway - feel free to use force on them - just put the drum in position where it is not absorbing the hits.

Great video, many thank. My machine started shaking around. I checked for play and noise in the drum by manually turning the drum (and lifting the inside of the drum) when not attached to the motor. It all feels/sounds fine. On removing the stabiliser legs from the machine frame I notice they just slide in and out, so they're not really taking any weight. should they have a form of gas resistance in them? Does this sound like the main source of vibration, or should I look at other things while the machine is in bits? Many thx in advance for any advice you can offer.

Quite helpful in repairing my Siemens machine. A few comments for those contemplating this: 1. Your machine WILL be different in many small ways so be prepared for that. 2. Seriously consider replacing what he calls the suspension legs. By the time the bearings go out, those will likely be tired as well. They can be done as a separate operation on my machine, but MUCH easier when you are this far in. 3. Consider also new brushes for the motor and of course a new belt. 4. The nut on my drum was bigger than shown. Do not rely on using an adjustable wrench to loosen/tighten it. I was lucky to have a socket big enough. 5. I had to work a LOT harder to get the shaft out of the old bearings. Wood cushion was too soft so had to resort to the two-hammer method. 6. The mechanical procedure goes pretty quickly, but I spent quite a bit of time in cleaning the insides of the machine- something I wouldn't want to pay a repairman to do but it certainly needed it. 7. He went quite quickly through removing/installing the drum seal. Take time to study how it goes as it's rather counterintuitive. 8. Biggest struggle I had with the entire job was reinstalling the retaining rings on the drum seal. Both of mine are the type he shows on the outer one- a wire with a short spring rather than a continuous spring as on his inner. My front concrete ring is not removable so clearance was very tight and the spring tension is substantial. 9. My machine is 13 years old so the various plastic retaining clips are getting brittle. Hard to avoid breaking some of them. Bottom line: If you consider yourself above-average in mechanical ability, then go for it. The folks at how-to-repair are top-notch and VERY helpful!

Very good tutorial, I find some indersit and other manufactures machines today they want you to buy the complete outer and inner drum all assembled this makes it impracticable to repair another way of righting off the machine thats our throw away society or is it? they could be more friendlier so the blame solely rest with the manufactures, I used to be with Hoover when it was Hoover till some bright spark killed the company off I used to repair white goods that washing machines and fridges /freezers and the vacuum cleaners again used to rebuild all the models and service them thank you for putting this up I am retired now but still keep my hand in

Interestingly the original has no silicon on the seal. For me i fitted the new seal into the groove, pushed it with a screwdriver so it stays inplace and then put the silicon on top. imho you are more likely to get a leak there than in the groove. Also you need all those extra screws to screw both sides of the tub together to get a good seal. Also in the two machines i have taken apart, the bearings have been fine but the spider on the drum had cracks; the first machine was really old and not worth fixing (20 year old Candy); the 2nd one was a bosch classic and it was pretty modern, and worth buying a new drum for, since new bosch machines are at least £320 quid, and £180 new machines are rubbish. you can buy a new drum direct from bosch and it was £109 including free delivery. I noticed the new drum had some design improvements; a thicker spider and a metal belt around the drum to give it more strength; also no holes on the back, presumably to stop water getting to the bearings. if you buy a new drum from one of the spares companies, the price is about the same, but they will order it from bosch, wait for it to arrive, then send it on to you! Expect to wait a week for delivery if you dont buy it from bosch! Other thing i noticed on the original drum is that they packed grease between the seal and bearing; presumably to prevent water getting to the bearing? Anyhow i did this too. Machine is like new now; machine was made in 2006 so recon i will get another 10 years out of it (replaced bearings and seal as well as the drum).

I can do it in 10 minutes now. The selector knob on the control panel wore out so I drilled a hole, cut out the center of the handle and filed a square shaft from the original plastic and tightened down the new shaft. That was years ago. I have 30 years of Bosch tools; to bad the Bosch washers do not last.

A very nice and helpful video although I didn't like the usage of the silicon sealant to install the main o-ring/gasket. The gasket should do the work by itself. From my experience (in general), o-rings and silicon sealant do not "work" together. I would use silicon only if I don't have the o-ring at all. I don't have much experience in washing machines repair and this is only my general idea :-). However I liked this video.

Quite amazing that you quite literally have to deconstruct the entire machine to do this. Most repairs you can work around parts but this item means building a washing machine from scratch like you were in the factory! They certainly did not want these to be repaired. My Bosch is barely 2 years old (just out of guarantee ) & I'm disgusted at a Bosch (given their price, which is fine if something lasts) lasting just 25 months before a bearing failure.

Not made in Germany anymore...My Bosch is 12 years old (last of the German made) - some say I may have been lucky, but I know others with the same model and there's is good too. I have come here today to find out how to dismantle it as there is a very minor leak somewhere underneath....first problem in 12 years.... Sorry to hear about yours being a bit of a poor show!

I work in a building with only bosch axxis washer and dryers. If you follow the instructions like your life depends on it your washer will last a long time. The majority of our 352 bosch axxis machines have lasted 10 years. The issue is once you put in a load that is too heavy by the machines standard and blow out the drum bearing you are completely screwed. Big props to the makers of this video though for people who are willing to do this.

Another good tip is to put the new bearings in the freezer maybe an hour or so before fitting. Freezing them will shrink them slightly so they fit in the recess easier. I've done this on my motorbike bearings on the rear wheel and they just slotted in. The frustrating thing for me on our Bosch 1200 Classixx is that I took the whole think apart (using this video! Thanks!) and it wasn't the bearings. The frame on the back of the drum (3 pronged aluminium bracket) had snapped on all three prongs and therefore the drum was loose on the spindle. I think this could have been identified by the fact that the pulley wheel on the rear of the casing and the shaft were not loose in any way.

The smaller front bearing while extremely difficult to knock out is still possible. However the violent blows needed to do this cause enough shock and noise to damage your hearing and give you nerve damage in your hands even if you manage to avoid smashing them. It is essential to wear ear plugs and heavy gardening gloves. I have found the large back bearing impossible to shift firstly with a chisel and lump hammer and now using a tube spanner and the back of a very heavy axe. I soaked it overnight in penetrating oil which still didn't help and now suspect that it might be an interference fit which will require freezing spray and about 30 quid unexpected expense. Treating it like this is ridiculous and damage to the tub and seat is inevitable. I am now working out how to improvise a bearing puller. I already have a car hub puller and now need to find two extremely large thick washers. If I can't wind it out I am going to give up and spend 400 quid on a new machine.

What is the difference between the spider arm being damaged and the bearings being damaged ? My machine won't get further into a cycle than filling with water and turning once before pausing a long time, repeats a couple times, then empties and wants to spin, bangs the left side of the machine and stops.
@How-to-repair
@How-to-repair 2 жыл бұрын
the spider is the cross harness system that attaches to The Drum and then you have a steel shaft that goes through the bearings this will be a much more expensive repair than just replacing the bearings. when the bearings go wrong the Drum drops slightly and becomes noisy this is still a big job but a much cheaper process Thanks 👍 for watching and please remember to subscribe to the Channel as that's what keeps us going in able to make the video for you

This vid was so good, the Mrs.watched it with me! Well now I know I can do it..but do I WANT to do it? Bearing set, new seal, and new door gasket will cost around $170 USD. True, much less then a new washer but I'm not happy with my Bosch front loader. I've already replaced the door latch, and had to removed coins from the pump 3 times. Why can't they just have sump trap underneath that you can take off easily so objects will not go round and round and then jam the pump? Looks like a trip to Lowe's tomorrow after reading reviews..uggh ..

Can you do this with modern machines? The Bosch WAN24100GB part diagram shows that it is a split drum, but the bearing doesn't appear to be available as a part on it's own. Instead it comes integrated into the rear tub www.bosch-home.co.uk/customer-service/care-protection-and-parts/WAN24100GB/01#/TabsTogglebox=spare-section-3/Togglebox=tb0318/
