This interview is from 1997 and we are still having the same conversations about education. When will politicians realize that society will benefit and economies will grow from a better educated population.

chinagorom njoku districts and those who create state assessments need to see AND adopt this. I think a lot of teachers want to do things like this but the standardized tests make things very limiting

I am absolutely intrigued. To think of how many thousands of students have missed out on learning experiences! I could have benefited greatly understanding that we all learn in different ways. My education in the 70s, 80s and even the 90s continued to tell me that memorizing in rote, reciting, and maintaining written information equalled a percentage of intelligence. Now, I feel the door opening, not only for myself but my future clients and students.

My granddaughter watched this in school and showed it to me tonight. I am very impressed with this and I wish they would have had this mentality when I was in school. It would have really helped me because I had a head injury and it was very hard for me to get through school. I give this a good thumbs up👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻❤❤

The education system serves the economy, not you. When factories need cheap labour, the government will not promote higher education in the lower classes. Just think of the 60s and 70s. Now that there are fewer factory jobs, the government is pushing life-long learning. Why? So businesses get the right employees. You are a number in a game about profits.

This is why homeschooling is so perfect. A parent can tailor each child’s education in the best way in which they can learn. It worked for my kids.

Watching again in 2024 - absolutely excellent concept of multiple intelligences. Love this interview. As a high school teacher in America this is still so relevant even today. I think about it a lot and try to implement it in my teaching practice as much as possible. If only our government could adopt a new and much less standardized approach to education.

I've always been a huge proponent of Piaget's learning model, which is, essentially, learning through play/learning through experience. I think that dovetails quite nicely with what's been said here by Gardner.

yes well done. As an educator, I really respect his theory and hope to work in or start my own education center based on his theory. The models I've seen in the US are outstanding and actually address the REAL education of children based on their strengths and interests. Education is ever changing, and it is our job to find the most effective way to educate our youth, and that may not be the "traditional" way that is clearly not working.

well, something must be working, or we wouldn't have so many teachers and doctors. yet, we have a shortage of nurses and waste management recyclers. the ultimate goal of education should be to see the BIG picture and how all of the smaller parts are connected. yes, i believe that we should start out with generalizations before we move into specifics. our full potential can only be achieved in stages so we must move ahead step by step.

on an even more basic level there are two types of knowledge: real knowledge and abstract knowledge. real knowledge is what happens outside of our heads and abstract knowledge is what happens inside of our heads. of course, this is an over-simplification of what is really happening. Here is an example. A crow sees roadkill on the road (real knowledge) and then caws five times. Those five caws communicate: "roadkill" as abstract knowledge. This causes other crows to fly to that location as they hear the sound of the crow cawing five times over and over again. Whereas three caws from the crow signals "danger", for example, the presence of a predator such as a cat.

now there is a fine line between real knowledge and abstract knowledge, or book learning and pragmatism, and that fine line may be the fine line that exists between matter and energy. i was never very good at mathematics or quantum physics, so i can't explain much further...

does anyone knows where i can read it about Howard Gardner explain the 8 Criteria intelligence like set core of operations, psychometric task, and other 6 criteria, it would be helpful if there's example of each criteria intelligence because im having hard time to comprehend the artciel that i have been reading whch i still not understand

I am a very visual learner, my mom had to leave school when she was 11 years old and yet she could read and write poetry excellent. Gardner made some valid points that I agree with and have witness some of these intelligences but, Mr Gardener speaks of a "political commitment must be made" but they all make such a commitment during election time the key is how to hold them all accountable?

How come? On what grounds are you stating this fact? I see a Harvard PHD professor who is offering an explanation on education, I am a mom who is interested in the topic and by Dr. Gardner´s credentials alone he gets my vote on confidence on these matters, instead of some random youtube user comment discrediting and affirming falseness. So please, if you have something factual to say with some good evidence backing it up, I really wish to hear it or read it. Thanks.

I have a question. Maybe someone could help me. As teschers, we are suppose to create meaningful experiences and stimulate students, cognitively speaking. In this sense, it is simple to teach vocabulary but how do we teach grammar by using this method?

Perhaps the student can find stimulation and meaning in lessons that teach them a skill that they can successfully utilize in a real-world scenario outside of the classroom. I remember a time when I was travelling in Sardinia, I walked into a cafe and (after lots of Duolingo) ordered some gelato and espresso in Italian....It wasn't perfect, and my accent was no doubt bizarre.... but damn it was a helluva lot better than repeating the word "coffee" over and over while miming drinking with one hand and pointing at the espresso machine with the other. I guess the point I'm making is...the thrill of achieving my goal of using vocabulary AND grammar to communicate with a native speaker was significantly meaningful and cognitively stimulating. If a teacher can discover a student's motivations for wanting to learn and tailor their lesson plans toward helping the student produce immediate, tangible results......winner winner chicken dinner.

Of course there are different ways in which children learn, however, when you have overpopulated classrooms, there's no time to adapt each lesson to each type of Learning....students must discover in what way they learn when apply it when learning sth..

"Education systems", at least in my experience, are still suffering from the problems discussed in this interview. I believe this is like NP vs. P problem :). But once we solve this problem, believe me guys, we'll be in heaven ! :)

Maybe now through this pandemic we may view exams differently, as Howard says here they only work for a small percentage of the "passengers on the train" .... So in Wales , Scotland and England for two years exams will not take place, maybe this is the start ???????????

Problem with that is Sir is that how can all the human get benefitted from it as it s because we live in a controlled environments and had we not been living in countries, it would be entirely diffrent and it further divides people as people start taking advantage of each other if they get any sort of intelligence higher than anybody and it these concepts of harnessing or uplift humans should only be applied to people with mental disabilities and let other people like normal human living beings. helping , crying, sobbing taking care of each other , fighing. this is not good for society as I have seen once people get power through any means and they start taking advantage of each other especially people from Asian backgrounds and it is evident in their socio economic cultures . any asian country whether it s india. china. japan . philipines otherwise people would be taking care of poor people and society more than letting them die on their own in those sweat shops.

This theory of his is fair-minded when observing the various talents and weaknesses people have, but it would be virtually impossible for any teacher to implement this as a coaching practice in a classroom situation. In fact, it ushers tremendous disharmony in a classroom setting. I've been a teacher for 11 years and have noticed the ineffective results of CORE education and its offshoots.

i use this in my classroom, one on the basics of teaching is repetition! so repeating the work in different ways of learning is beneficial to everyone. Like starting by explaining to the students, then watch a video, then a game to put the knowledge into action, then maybe a quiz... anything worth teaching can be taught in different ways

perhaps then, it would be better to determine which students learn best through each method and then segregate those students into groups based on that.
