I love playing this song on guitar and is great on an acoustic, very true it’s bloody hard to play & sing as Billy’s vocal phrasing & melodies are brilliant and hard to master, but with a bit of practice I’ve got this song sounding pretty damn good if I say so myself, always room for improvement though, I love the rawness of this track and to me music brings so much more emotion when played with some vulnerability and not spot on perfect, although Billy’s playing is faultless on this performance and sounds quality, every time I hear this song it always brings a tear to my eye taking me back to happy & sad times in my late teens/early 20’s in the 90’s, the power of music & performance and the emotions it can bring to me is an amazing feeling and is what I love about also being a songwriting musician myself, the power of music & emotions brings much solace in my life.

I’m 29 and I have a lot of nostalgia when I hear Smashing Pumpkins. I grew up with my mom introducing me to bands like Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, and R.E.M. I remember her buying me the tapes and then eventually we upgraded to CDs. We’ve grown apart over the years and aren’t so close anymore. But I hold on to the memories of those better times. Same age here. Yeah, the ‘90s was different. I often refer to the genre as the generation of depression because of the depths that the music reached. Sadness, melancholy & dreariness seemed rampant. Perhaps there’s a cycle of emotion that’s played out in each generation. Or maybe each generation gravitates to an emotion as a response of being the victim of the previous generations emotion?

The thing is back in the day he was being more of a vocalist than a singer.... he was constantly trying to do all sorts of affectations that wasn’t really in the realm of proper technique, and it really came across live where he was trying to make things rock harder or whatever. I believe he learned proper technique since. j Mascis is another hero of mine like this, he’s able to properly sing in tune now.

People are commenting on his guitar skills: remember, as an adolescent he was tested and deemed to be a prodigy in terms of his apparent musical ability. He scored so high on a standardized test he was made to take it again - it was thought to be a fluke, yet he got an even higher score. Moreover, once he learned guitar, he could play in that Eddie Van Halen/shredder level style. There are home videos of him just tearing it up on guitar. So, yes, the guy has natural talent in spades. No wonder he was writing hit records in his early twenties.

He's also playing right handed guitar while being left handed. Im the same way, learning his songs i learned some pretty clever ways to combat playing backwards. His muting of strings instead of not strumming them or keeping his hand in motion and lifting the pick to not play but keep momentum in his right hand helped me immensely. I didnt realize how hard his songs really were to learn when i learned to play lefty lol. Your barriers are your gifts to think differently than the rest i suppose.

Philip Kerr I’m a lefty and play guitar right handed. As in I write with my left hand and definitely not ambidextrous in that regard. Although it’s kind of a forced habit to play righty because I originally would have played lefty, but due to not realizing you could mirror guitar hero I got more comfortable with a righty playing style. And I definitely cannot play lefty. The point I’m trying to make is that most lefties are born lefty and learn to be ambidextrous not because of natural preferences but more so convenience and how most things are designed.

Shakedown 1979, cool kids never have the time On a live wire right up off the street You and I should meet June bug skipping like a stone With the headlights pointed at the dawn We were sure we'd never see an end to it all And I don't even care to shake these zipper blues And we don't know just where our bones will rest To dust I guess Forgotten and absorbed into the earth below Double cross the vacant and the bored They're not sure just what we have in the store Morphine city slippin' dues, down to see that We don't even care, as restless as we are We feel the pull in the land of a thousand guilts And poured cement, lamented and assured To the lights and towns below Faster than the speed of sound Faster than we thought we'd go, beneath the sound of hope Justine never knew the rules Hung down with the freaks and the ghouls No apologies ever need be made I know you better than you fake it, to see And I don't even care to shake these zipper blues And we don't know just where our bones will rest To dust I guess Forgotten and absorbed into the earth below The street heats the urgency of sound As you can see there's no one around

It feels great to just know I grew up and listened to awesome music in the 70's, 80's and 90''s. I'm so grateful for that. That feeling, that emotion, kids nowadays have no idea what that felt like to experience it while it happened. Those of you who also were the age to experience this understand. The rest have to read about it.

Remember month after month new amazing records coming out? Almost taking it for granted that amazing artists rise while hacks may get 1 hit & fade. I really feel like I took the great music for granted. Appearing new on the radios & going to shops to find more obscure stuff based on album covers & band names, reading the track list thinking this could be something! Sometimes a dud sometimes great. Then when cassettes were available recording off radio or copying other cassettes. Getting rare stuff off college radio then tracking down or calling them to find out what it was. There's still discovery of great talent on KZfaq but they will never get any recognition & if things don't eventually pay the bills you have to move on with life so we're gonna lose those artists
