If that's a problem for you, you'd be better off getting a USB hard drive and copying your photos to that as a backup instead.

I totally agree. Call it, what you will, but It's all about info harvesting formats increasing control. And as of 1/2023, Google holds our photos for ransom .. We have to pay for the app, to have Google release THAT, WHICH IS OURS! Some of the suggested alternatives are worth considering

Agreed. I have three dogs that are the same breed, AI recognizes them as the same, so if I want to view a photo of my deceased dog, I can't sort her from the other photos.

I could be wrong, but here's what may be happening to you because it happened to me. I was using the native Gallery app on my Android phone to organize/move my photos into certain albums (which are really just device folders). When I would then open the Google Photos app on my phone, I'd see those groups of folders with the same titles I had given them in the Gallery app. But those are not ALBUMS in the Google Photos app. I then needed to create Albums, but I didn't know this for a while, though. So when I would delete a folder (album) from the phone's Gallery app, I would notice that same-titled folder was now gone from the Photos app. I KNEW I had backed up all my photos but didn't understand where the folder went. Turns out, the photos were still in my Google Photos app, but just in chronological order. When I deleted the device folder "album" from my phone, it also deleted the folder from the Google Photos app but not the photos inside. They were still there, just in chronological order. So, what I should've been doing all along, was using the Google Photos app to create albums and organize my photos. The part that had confused me all along is that my phone's Gallery app calls the folders with the photos "albums" but they are really device folders. Creating an album in the Gallery app does not create an Album in Photos.

Me too, when I think I moved all pics and videos on google photos, i would delete them on my device and it will be deleted on google photo too

All you need to do is , in Google photo app, click on your profile icon, it will start backing up the photos and it will tell you when it's done loading them. Set all Google photo settings to your liking too

Get an app to scan documents and in Google photos don't select that folder for backup

If you have Google photos installed you forfeit any and all privacy your phone once had. Download all backed up photos from Google and then uninstal the app. Then take your private photos and never install the app again. Cause as soon as you do, it will access and upload your private photos.

@@romario.h5180 I found out that if you delete the photo from your phone gallery, you have to ALSO delete it from google photos app (there is no sync in place - which is sad).

YES , actually tonight I was busy with google lens for the first time , I found it if I delete a photo from regular gallery , automatically will be deleted from google photo app too.... btw my phone is LG aristo android metro t-mobile...btw why don't you take a picture randomly and then test it for yourself ?

Moving a photo to an external location to which Google photos does not have access and then deleting the photo from Google photos will, of course, not delete the photo from your other location. It will, however, delete the photo from your phone since the app has access to your phone. That said, under Utilities there is a Free Up Space option that will remove all photos on your phone that are already backed up on the Google servers. There is also a Delete From Device option for each photo that will do this for each individual photo. There is a way of removing photos from the Google photos server while keeping them on the phone and not using an external location. If you move the photos on the device to the Android Secure Folder then Google will not have access to the file on the phone when it is deleted from their server. Look into how to set that up if you want to "protect" your photos from Google deletion.

Anyone who has access to your phone will also have access to your google photos And to your Locked folder inside Google photos. The only thing this app does is to upload the photos to the cloud server under your Google account and it uses the same biometrics/password/pin set up for your phone in order to access the account. What this app hides is your photos from other non-google apps. Google itself can view each and every photo backed up to its servers without need to access your phone directly. In short, if you have any photos you want hidden then DO NOT USE OR INSTALL GOOGLE PHOTOS!!! Once installed it will automatically scan and back up to its servers every photo you have. If you want to keep anything private, use the android hidden folder instead, but be aware that 1. this uses up main memory and cannot be moved to an SD card, and 2. as soon as photos are removed from the hidden folder (such as to offload to a computer), Google photos will detect it and immediately upload to the cloud if it is still installed.

disable the auto backup option and upload selected photos only every few months. All features at minimum efforts.

@@z01k1 That is hardly an efficient solution. It offers no emergency backup and doesn't solve the lack of organization.

I SO agree. I dislike this as well and have not yet found a way to change it.
