This is the winning National History Day project from Maine in the Junior Individual Documentary division, by Philomena Mattes.

Well done! I met Ferlinghetti at his bookstore in SF. He was hammering down a loose stair tread. Crazy old guy. I am not sure I agree with your assertion that Ginsberg was the most influential poet of the 20th century, but he certainly helped to lead the world into a new direction. His undying devotion to free speech and poetic language, his support of the anti-war movement, his defense of gays and blacks. All of this will keep him high on my list of heroic American literary figures. I commend you on your fine work and congratulate you on winning the state competition. Go make movies, change the world, someone needs to. john

Allen Ginsberg liberated poetry the way Andy Warhol liberated visual art. He was a hero, a teacher, a man of peace and a wildly diverse genius who wrote beautiful poems. I feel lucky to have been on the same p!anet as him for the first 40 years of my life.

In 1994, Ginsberg appeared in a documentary on NAMBLA called Chicken Hawk: Men Who Love Boys (playing on the gay male slang term "Chickenhawk"), in which he read a "graphic ode to youth".

get a Grip, tasha! just because someone doesn't share your narrow prejudices, that says nothing about the validity of their Art! allen was a beautiful generous man, deeply Spiritual and always a Seeker... he wore Goodwill clothes yet gave thousands of dollars away to friends whose poetry hadn't been as successful... his poetry is Stunning and has inspired generations of other poets and wanderers... open your mind!

Regardless of what you believe about Allen's personal life, it is clear that the debate over "Howl" changed culture irrevocably by allowing people to express their views ("right" or "wrong") more freely. Perhaps it is a result of that fight and the anti-censorship crusades it has sparked that YOU are able to express your views, views that I see as wrong and uninformed, across the internet without censorship. Thank you for watching the film.

Great poetry should inspire or create a tapestry of beauty or inspirational thought and a feeling of well being for listeners and readers alike. The world is beset with much struggle, suffering and misery as it is.

I am wondering often as of late what ginsburg would have to say about the current state of things. And if there is some other voice out there,currently howling into the dark words I need to hear, that I simply can't find under all the mess of distraction

(cont.) You can't control dreams, man. Besides, the only reason he had the nightmare is because he was freaking out about his sexuality, which was considered obscene at the time. Tasha, you're not a bad person, and it's clear this is not something you came up with on your own. This probably comes from years of teachings, which can be hard to unwind. I encourage you to do some reading on Mr. Ginsberg (preferably his youth's diaries). Who knows? You might actually change your mind. Go in peace. :)

Also, dancingnixie, I wonder if you have read his "Collected Poems"? In that migraine of a book you can see what a hack writer he was and that he will never be confused with Ilia Chavchavadze or William Shakespeare. Try these poems on for size: "Love Comes", "Sweet Boy, Gimme Yr A**", "Hum Bom", "Song of the Washing Machine", "Many Loves" (Pepto time!), "Lysergic Acid", "Mescaline", "In Society".... And "Gang Bang", which you can find in "The Book of Martyrdom and Artifice". Happy reading!

I see. Well, fine then. Let's just move on, and stop this senseless bickering (mostly from my part). The world and the Internet have enough bad blood in it, so let's just put the whole Ginsberg ordeal away. I'll continue to enjoy his works and interviews, and you can enjoy everything else this site has to offer. And before I finish this reply I'd like to apologize for my angry response & the "years of teaching" comment. I shouldn't have reacted so irrationally.My deepest apologies. Go in peace.

You're welcome. Allen fought for filthy speech - not free speech. If you question anything I said, I would suggest that you read "The Beat Hotel", in which Allen stated he wanted to sleep with his brother AS WELL AS his father. "I Celebrate Myself" gives some nasty information about his STD's and his affairs with men and women. Type in Allen Ginsberg NAMBLA to see him read a boy-banging poem. You can also read books of his letters...Just have some Advil and Pepto handy if you do.

Hi, blissbite. I think you responded to me once before, on another video. The reason I dislike Allen Ginsberg as intensely as I do, does not come from "years of teachings". My mother taught me very well, but neither she nor anyone else I know is familiar with the writings of Ginsberg. I had read his "Collected Poems" and thought they were vulgar, and sloppily written. In short, I think he is a hack. I do not like him as a person, either, having read letters that he wrote.

Very easily, Keith. I have read his "Collected Poems", and they are a bad joke. Ranting and raving with lotsa exclamation points, and lurid details of his sex life do not make a valuable poet. Why do I know more about Ginsberg than his fans do? Haven't you read his biographies and letters? Then you would know what I was talking about! You couldn't possibly come away with positive feeling about this man if you've read him in his own words!

Hi, Pamela. So, disliking someone who spent his 'artistic' career promoting mind-shattering drugs, promiscuity, and sex with minors is in your mind a problem of "narrow prejudices"? No wonder this world is going to hell in a hand-basket. "Open your mind"... nope, my mind isn't open to infection.

Somehow, I don't think Ginsberg was interested in promoting anything. I think he was giving voice to much of what he saw around him and his own authentic constitution. The fact that we live in a world where differences are not only tolerated, but celebrated is a blessing and a gift.

The most influential poet of the last century??? ... is this some sort of joke video? How about Ezra Pound? William Carlos Williams? TS Eliot? Sylvia Platt? This video comes off like something made by an impressionable high school student who just found out about the “beats”.

It well, may be, Mr. Rutherford. She very likely , as you astutely observe, "just found out about the 'beats'." (BTW, in the term "Beats," the 'B' is always capitalized.) Yes, you are correct, Ezra Pound, William Carlos Williams, TS Eliot, Sylvia Platt, were great poets, perhaps each "the best" in their own way. I would argue the most influential was Pound, though not necessarily the "best". TIME magazine, that essential bastion of American Arts & Letters, said Eliot was on the top of the poetry heap for the XXth century. That's because Ezra-dude was bat-shit, locked up as a fascist and traitor. (How I wish that I were born as Hilda Doolittle!). Have you every read any of the Cantos? Absolutely impenetrable and irresistible. If you know the English language really, really well - AND Latin, Classical Greek, French, Italian, Spanish, you _might_ be able to comprehend the Cantos in your lifetime, but not guaranteed. But just read them to listen to the music of his language, the intelligence of his mind, his mastery of speech, and an inkling into 1/10,000th of his knowledge of history and Classical Literature. Lovely day out today, eh, Mr. Prufrock? Time for a walk.

"Love Comes", "Gang Bang", "Lysergic Acid", "Mescaline", "Sweet Boy Gimme Yr A**" (which he read for NAMBLA, there is a video called "Chicken Hawk" on youtube, which he is in for about 15 seconds) are morally appalling and just plain bad writing. A man who would promote sex with minors and spend much of his life promoting mind-shattering drugs is not a hero. After reading poems from Ilia Chavchavadze, a man of great talent AND character, Allen and all of the 'Beats' are a joke.

You have the poetic breadth of a flea. Did it ever occur to you that the "boy" the author refers to might have been 40 years old? I am 61 and still refer to a woman I love as "my girl". If you are offended by mind altering drugs and homosexuality, then don't participate. The great thing about life is there is just as much opportunity to jump in as to jump out. To declare all the beat writers are a joke, well now, that would fall under that old favorite, better to keep your mouth closed and have people to think you a fool than to open it and remove all doubt. I leave you now to your petty rants and your pointy hat. Addios Mi Amigio!
