In the scene where she talked back to Suliman, she poured her heart out and became extremely confident, but after Suliman retorted, Sophie got surprised and her confidence shattered, and turned back into a nan. The nan form was a bit of a gift because she used it to hid her true self due to her lack of confidence. Most people do this nowadays though, they hid behind their "made up" mental sickness or something so they can be more free, without being afraid to be judged for what they are.

i always saw it worded as her outer appearance would match how she viewed herself, partly making it extra hard as only they can break how she views herself, and everytime shes young again is when shes mentally occupied and doesnt see herself as a old crone.

@@NatalionCygirl A lovely book, very British, but you seriously have to appreciate the book and the movie as separate entities :D I originally had a hard time liking the movie after having childhood nostalgia over the book, but now I can appreciate both :D Just prepare for Howl kinda being a complete brat, and you'll be fine! xD

it was VERY dramatic😂 it was just his hair color yet he acted like he turned into something horrendous, though sophie is much more understandable with how she perceives herself because it’s the opposite.

@@JulesPorta I guess it depends on how you view yourself. To you it might seem very dramatic because it was just his hair color, but maybe for him it was a huge change and it meant he turned ugly all of a sudden.

I completely agree. I also think Howl doesn't have a very high opinion of himself (outside of his appearance, and even that is something that he works hard to maintain). He's also very quick to do things that will hurt him without much thought, most of the magic he uses does hurt him physically. And maybe I've seen the film too many times, but he also doesn't seem to eat very much, in that breakfast scene he just gives all his food to Calcifer casually. I do feel bad for him

It's both a funny line because of how dramatic it is but also so sad because that's how he truly feels. Like, his identity is so wrapped up in superficial things at this point that he has a crisis when there is a change he couldn't control.

It’s much more well-developed and complex in the book. I guess they just wanted to include the character anyway but I feel like they could have either developed it better or removed the “missing Prince plot” completely.

In the Audiobook narrated by Jenny Sterlin, she does a welsh accent for Howl. It's pretty awesome.

Likely will not happen. The last Studio Ghibli film was in 2014. Tales from Earthsea was Miyazakis last "proper" piece of work that didn't do very well compared to the rest of them. I can't remember what he said exactly but in an interview, Miyazaki said he felt he lost his passion for writing and tried forcing Tales from Earthsea and it didn't pan out very well. I believe he said he simply ran out of ideas. After the failure of that film, Miyazika left Studio Ghibli and stopped his work, that was in 2011. Films have come out since seeing as Studio Ghibli still exists but they're more or less at their whit's end without the man as the director. The fact 2014 was their latest film doesn't look good and the fact Miyazakis work was over 10 years ago adds to that. Who knows, someone who's got a brilliant mind may buy the studio and create some bangers, but nobody knows what's up with it at the moment. It's rumoured or believed that Disney now own the studio which is sad because they'll never produce anything any good; but I don't think it's confirmed. I don't think another SG film is impossible, but it's unlikely and even if one (or more) does come out...the golden age for Studio Ghibli is over for the most part. Unless of course like I said, someone with a mind like Miyazaki's picks it up; very unlikely though. There are 22 Studio Ghibli films I believe. If you haven't seen them all then I recommend checking them out. Kiki's Delivery Service and The Cat Returns are my two faves after this and Spirited Away.

@@maximusstorm1215 That's a lot of wrong information. The last Ghibli movie was in 2020, not 2014. The last feature film Miyazaki directed was The Wind Rises in 2013. He is currently working on How Do You Live. Also, he wasn't involved in Tales from Earthsea, it was his son, Goro Miyazaki, who directed and co-wrote that movie. Disney doesn't own Ghibli. Not sure where you are getting your "facts" from.

@@SaSemax Chill dude, maybe I got some stuff wrong. If you look, there is a lot of info talking about what I mentioned. A lot was just memory and I simply went to IMDB to look at all the Ghibli films, the ones you mentioned are not there. Miyazaki did leave the studio and Disney owning it was more a rumour, like I said. Miyazaki did retire but he has possibly got back into the business. I remember him not being happy about Tales from Earthsea. He did say in an interview at one point he felt he was running out of ideas, or words to the effect of. I didn't realise Goro did TFES, Japanese people use their second names so seeing "Miyaziki" come up just has you assume. Either way, Studio Ghibli's Golden age is over, it's fell off since Miyaziki got less involved, especially seeing as the 2020 film has a score of 4.8. I literally didn't know it existed. Also, when I said "their latest film" i meant "his latest film" as in Miyazaki....I was fully aware films had been released since 2014 as i remember watching Mary and the Witch's flower. I feel what I said is true but Miyazaki has simply got back into the business within recency and that is where the confusion is coming from because there was one point when he retired, claimed he was done and nobody really knew what was happening with the studio. That was around 2015 when I followed the Ghibli scene a lot. Since then I stopped following Ghibli films as they started to get worse and worse.

Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne-Jones. Michael is what he's called in the novel. I highly recommend it. And if you like audiobooks, check out the one narrated by Jenny Sterlin.
