I'd just like to point out that "lycanthropy" automatically entails transformation into a wolf, although it has been "bastardised" into transformation into any animal. If you want a general term for were-creature that would be a therianthrope.

The myths that D&D's lycanthropes were based on only specified wolves, because that's probably the apex predator in the area of the myths. Doesn't mean that TSR or Wizards of the Coast bastardized anything by expanding it to other creatures. Sure, it is looking less and less like the original myths, but guess what? with each book, TV series, and movie, the myth has been evolving on its own.

Yeah, but in the books lycanthropes are the term for all were-animals. We're talking about DnD, not mythology

The criticism was about linguistics, not mythology. Fair point that the DnD rulebooks group them all as lycanthropes, but given that "lycan" means "wolf" it is a little strange to ascribe that term to, say, a weretiger; that's the point they were trying to make.

If you're going to spit hairs on Latin and Greek roots of words in the English Language, you're going to have a bad time. There are many examples of words that no longer fit their Latin or Greek roots, either because the language had changed, or they found the original meaning to be too small.

I had a setting where Lycanthropes were used as beast of war like a war dog. So finding a werewolf hiding in a town, trying to avoid being taken away wasn't completely uncommon. It was possible to remove the curse, but doing so was very mentally, and physically taxing, to the point people would rather die then actually go through with the process. Those that did though were often lesser then they once were. So instead they tended to just hide away and try to stay out of trouble. Though on nights of a "silver moon" (basically a full moon that marked the start of a new season), they'd be overwhelmed by their beastly nature, and would go on a rampage for the night. Mostly though the size of the moon just causes them to have a desire to rip and tear. A full moon is akin to suffering from withdrawal, but enough willpower can get you through the night without mulling someone.

I was thinking something similar for the Beasts of War part, though for removing it, I've thought of a few things, A Druid is able to "supress" Lycanthropy in a individual for up to a week with a ritual that lasts as for 1-7 hours, and a group of them can remove it with a ritual, however the Lycanthrope undergoes extreme pain that would kill someone without the curse, and it results in one person and a "regular" animal of the same kind that the Lycanthrope was, (the ritual is essentially ripping the animal out of a person) so a werewolf would be cured and there would be a new wolf in the world, and if said person was a caster, they'd be able to take the animal as a familiar without any real fuss, only thing is finding a group of Druids large enough to perform the ritual is the hard part and even then they would have to be convinced to go through with the ritual, but the method has a 100% cure rate. Another way would be to visit a priest, though this is dependent on a few things for instance a "true born" (born of at least 1 parent that is a Lycanthrope) Lycanthrope can't be cured this way, and depending on how the curse was placed on any other Lycanthrope things might get complicated for instance the followers of a God of War can't remove a curse placed by a God of Hunting, but those who follow a God of Magic or Life can, etc., but something like a Hag placing the curse is fair game for anyone, it's a lot less painful then the ritual druids can perform, a lot easier to get done since even a wandering cleric can do this method with the right equipment, but doesn't result in a animal being spontaneously created, though there are perks and downsides to being a lycanthrope aside from the obvious, since one civilization views them as nobility, with many of their leaders being Lycanthropes, while another views them simply as tools to be used, and other places still have wildly varying views, though there is a additional rule that Lycanthropes follow in that no Lycanthrope can willingly harm a Druid, the few exceptions are those who are brand new and thus have effectively 0 control over themselves, those being physically and mentally forced to, and condemned Druids, who have done something absolutely unforgivable, even if others don't know they did whatever deed made them condemned in the first place, if a Lycanthrope harms a druid then something is very wrong, just even then it's up in the air as to what it is, since Druids follow essentially the same rule just reversed.

One angle I rarely see played out in terms of the Therianthropy trope is that of corruption and temptation. Yes, you're a slavering, hulking beast, but you're a *powerful* slavering, hulking beast. Unless your enemies have specialized weapons, they're not going to be able to do much to you when you start eating them, and wow is it ever satisfying as a full-bore predator just to eat. Of course, for this to really work, you do have to play up the downsides to make it clear that this -is- corruption, but it helps leverage the benefits in ways that leans into that notion. Sprinkle maybe a little bonus XP here and there when they indulge in their animal instincts, but then make control increasingly difficult as they do. I don't believe in wresting full control away form the players - that's going way too far. Your character is cursed, but they're still *your* character. Periodic and forced incidents, however, are another story. Throw will saves at them *not* to eat the little girl in the red riding hood as she passes on her way to grandma's house. Do they succeed? Great. Do they fail? A little experience comes from sating the beast as it grows stronger, but that means the next little girl going to grandmas will be an even bigger challenge to resist killing. Maybe successful showcases of restraint holds the beast at bay, and the checks get easier (to a point). Maybe it makes it more determined to indulge its instincts and so it gets harder. Maybe there's no escape, and as the player's claws get covered in more and more blood, it becomes more apparent that they need to cure this, no matter how powerful it makes them. Maybe there's a balance to be struck - difficulty grows until you give in and maul that hapless flowergirl, whereupon it fades back to even. The point is, a more interesting study is one that's progressive, and that leverages player choice. It has to be a curse, no doubt, and the consequences have to be clear, but coaxing the player into evil is a lot more effective and interesting than magically magicing them evil.

I don't know about other systems, but Pathfinder came out with a system called "corruptions" that works a lot like that. Corruptions can give you boons and they can also make your life harder. The thing is, if you don't properly resist when you're most susceptible to the corruption, you eek closer to what the corruption is trying to make you in the first place, only becoming under the GM's control if you fail 3 times, and even then, GMs can let you keep the character if you hold true to it's text. There are corruptions for everything from lycanthropy to vampirism to lichdom to becoming more machine than man.

One fun thing i oulled on my players was the imperial justice system. Each major city had a specialized maze where at ghe full moon they would throw wanted criminals in with Lycanthrope "executioners". The executiiners are well treated during normal days because people believe it helps get a clean execution (or even possibly a chance at survival!)

Something that's happened in my long running group that I think is pretty unique is, we actually worked WITH Strahd to merge a small section of Barovia into Faerun, cause for all his issues, Strahd was still human enough to want to protect his people from a larger threat. Anyway, many of the people saved this way were Lycanthropes of.... basically every kind, and they ended up joining a small, ruined village, and ended up building it back up. In the process (along with the party raiding the personal library of Strahd and sharing some relevant books), they all also learned to have full control of their transformation, so now the wererat leader Skorn, is now the leader of a mercenary group, sort of like The Companions from Skyrim, but they're were-everythings instead of just wolves.

So, I need to work on the gameplay functions of lycanthropy for my campaign, but the social aspects are decided, it is illegal to kill a lycanthrope unless they're threatening your life or have killed repeatedly in the past, becaus they are people. However there are many people who disagree with this and think that lycanthrope are monsters that have to be killed. Also, a lycanthrope is required to own either a set of silver shackles mounted to the wall, a padded or inescapable room that they can lock themselves in or a cloak of moon shielding, which is an item I created which shields a lycanthrope from the effects of a full moon, but these are really rare, so it's not a 'get out of jail free card'

I have a chimera lycanthropy in 5e where a person can permanently gain some benefit of an animal form, but in turn lose control in a specific situation. It was posed as a quest reward, but was actually a curse from the quest giver. The first person asked for eagle wings to fly, but suddenly found themselves intensely claustrophobic as their mind became more eagle like and hated being caged. Another asked for owl eyes to see in the dark, but in turn found it harder to sleep at night. The third one was a barbarian and asked for lizard scales as an AC bonus, but in turn became lethargic when cold.

This video explains volumes for me. For my very first game (5e if anyone is wondering) the DM allowed me to play as a barbarian/werewolf. I could turn once a day whenever I wanted, I had a magic ring that gave me extra transformations when I sacrificed animals, I had a choice between a wolf with all the resistances of a lycanthrope or the hulking man-beast of legends. In addition I had a separate leveling pathways that added feats and resistances that could work in tandem with my original hulking Goliath form. Not knowing any better I was thrilled until I realised all the encounters became about circumventing my immunity to non silvered or non enchanted weapons along with my increased hit points. Having realized his mistake halfway through the campaign he began requiring me to make sanity checks to prevent bursting out of my skin at inopportune times. And my werewolf feats and perks were removed to prevent the party from having only one dual classing adventurer. Which was fair enough considering none of us were higher than level 5. I'm a new DM myself and I love themes surrounding players vs. the wild or an individual coming to terms with the primordial side that sleeps within. I personally intend to use lycanthropes not just as monsters to be slain or some cheap horror gimmick; instead using them as a means to create a new playstyle or at the very least a narrative understanding of the wild and what it means to be one with the beast.

here's an option i would go for with control: give the player the choice of what the trigger is: combat? taking damage? getting low on health? certain cents or tastes? when the trigger is hit give the an appropriate save (probably con or wis in 5e), which they can choose to fail. perhaps the more times they change or have changed recently the harder or the easier the save becomes. now you as dm can play with that trigger. the cent of blood makes you transform? what happens when you get close to a butcher? you change when you get severe wounds? this is psychic creates that doesn't leave a mark on you and you need to hurt yourself to get your shape to change.

With Lycanthropy I personally have different strains of it because I treat it like a disease, an arcane disease mind you but a disease nonetheless. Though I keep them as classical Lycanthropes, Werewolves. Each people view the disease differently, most view it as an evil because most strains result in the individual losing themselves, both during the transformation and while in their humanoid state, some strains are hereditary, some only affect certain races ect. Anyway, that's my take on Lycanthropy.

Undaar Thorbran i treat it like a curse. If the pc's get it u start with the cursed without knowing because they did not know doing an certain action will cause you to become a wear wolf. The pc on night watch will have a fight with the cursed pc nor knowing it was a friend. Then later at night time when the cursed turned on the pc would go into a,city kill people and return to bace then a mage or a ranger would us a spell to find the beast or tracking it's foot prints. Then reveal one of the pc's are cursed. Then have them figure it out who it is with the forgotten typed clues.

I like the brazilian take on werewolfs. you become a werewolf by being the seventh son of a seventh son, and you transform at the full moon, by sleepwalking to a crossroads, where you become a werewolf mix of whatever animals happened to pass through there recently. You then become basically imortal, being vulnerable only to silver, and you will rampage until either death, or dawn. pretty cool right?

I tend to have at least two types of Lycanthropy when I'm running a game. The first is more traditional and feral. I consider this to be both the weaker strain, but also the less controllable. These turn with the cycle of the moon, and go properly feral when it happens. Nothing short of a cure or an execution will stop the transformation, and the best you can really hope for is containment. You awake from such transformations with either no memories at all, or horrific flashes with often sickening implications. They either find a way to deal with the process, or deal with the (sometimes dire) consequences of their negligence. The second version is both more powerful and more volatile, but it also provides the opportunity for mastery. With sufficient effort, preparation, and luck, even a relatively inexperienced Lycanthrope of this breed might resist the lunar change- though the difficulty of doing so increases with every change resisted. More importantly (both as a hazard and potential tool), transformations are not solely tied to the moon. Events that cause extreme anger in the character or stress on the body (including certain circumstances in combat) could trigger the transformation. Some may be able to transform at will, but have little control over their resulting form, while others might retain a thin shred of their own mind during such transformations. The most accomplished of these Lycanthropes might be able to shift forms at will and retain their full minds regardless of shape, but they could still be susceptible to the rages that overtake their kin. Which version gets utilized can depend on a variety of factors, including the power level of the character outside of their Lycanthropy, the manner in which it was contracted, and, if a pc, the preference of the player (to some degree). Across the board, however, I tend to rule that Lycanthropes in their more beastly form cannot: - Speak (Speak with Animals not withstanding) - Cast spells - Perform notably dexterous actions (IE: pick a lock or craft/repair something) As for equipment handling, I can be flexible. There's decent arguments for both, and one could even argue that it should change to reflect ones control over the Lycanthropy. If we're cool with Polymorph, I don't see a reason to raise a huge fuss over it here.

I actually love the idea of a Druidic organisation running a kind of "union" for lycanthropes. It's a marriage made in ... somewhere, anyway. The Druids get "muscle" in the form of lethal beast-people. The lycanthropes receive Druidic magic to counteract the downsides of their curse. As with any union, there are always "scabs." in this case, a bunch of lycanthropes who want to just cut loose without any controls and who don't _care_ about the downsides. Which is, of course, where Master/Mistress [whoever] points out that their star pupil is hanging around with a pack of rag-tag adventurers (ie. the party) and maybe _they_ can get these renegades to pull their bloody heads in.

Maybe something like the Borg collective?
@jackielinde7568
@jackielinde7568 6 жыл бұрын
RPG incorporated: If you're talking about a more SciFi/Horror setting, Lycanthropy is treated like a virus, maybe even an offshoot of rabies. The Borg don't use a virus in a biological sense. It's nanomachines that have a very specific programming that slowly changes the "infected" body to one that is compatible with the borg tech. Cybermen from older Dr Who shows forgo the nanomachines and everything is just added on or replaced.
@jackielinde7568
@jackielinde7568 6 жыл бұрын
Mike Winans: It depends on what stories you're talking about and the settings. Long before our understanding of virology, catching a virus could be seen as falling under some devil's curse that was slowly killing you. That's why most fantasy story settings, and even quite a few SciFi and Horror settings call Lycanthropy a curse. But, there are a fair amount of SciFi and Horror that do equate Lycanthropy to a disease like Rabies, except that you turn into an insane wolf instead of getting all foamy, biting those near you, and dying.
@mikewinans5091
@mikewinans5091 6 жыл бұрын
Jack Linde from a mechanical standpoint in 5E at least, spells like lesser restoration can be used to cure disease, but not to lift curses. Remove curse lifts curses, but doesn’t cure disease. Curses are generally considered to be magic, therefore the question of whether a lycanthrope could transform within an antimagic field comes up, where if it is a disease it is generally considered to be biological and that may affect that ruling. From a narrative standpoint I agree, it depends on the level of knowledge and research available in the campaign setting as to whether diseases in general are considered to be distinct from curses or not.
@jackielinde7568
@jackielinde7568 6 жыл бұрын
Mike Winans: Now you're going from a purely high level look at how lycanthropy is viewed to how it functions mechanically within a single gaming system. D&D has always asserted that Lycanthropy is a curse and not a disease. Since you're specifically asking about 5e, I had to go to the 5e Monster Manual (because, of course 5e PHB and 5e DMG wouldn't list it... sigh...) On Page 206 of the Monster Manual, under the entry for Lycantropes is a heading called "Curse of Lycanthropy". It states: "A Remove Curse spell can rid an affected lycanthrope of the curse, but a natural born lycanthrope can be freed of the curse only with a wish." It didn't say how antimagic zones would affect lycanthropy, but my guess would be it all depends on if the person was bitten or born with it. If we're talking a bite, I would treat it like an enchantment: the anti magic-zone does not remove the curse, but the curse doesn't manifest while the cursed individual is within the zone. But, it sounds like the material treats a natural born lycanthrope as if the curse is an innate creature ability. Since anti-magic zones don't apply to creature abilities, unless they're specifically stated as a spell, the afflicted individual would still be subject to the curse's effects while in the anti-magic zone. Then again, there's a whole debate on DnDBeyond.com about this. Still, if you're the DM, it's your game and your rules. You could rules that some god created the curse by changing the fabric of reality, so it's not affected by anti-magic zones. Or, you could rule it a magic based affliction and no one gets to shape shift or use their powers within anti-magic zones. Up to you.

In my games I made a System where Players can be turned into a "Cured Race" in 4 ways and start off as a "Low Rank" version of the Race they choose and later "Rank Up" once they get to a higher level. (much like taking a champion sub class). Example: For Vampires they would start off as a "Fledgling" and later become a "Vampiric Blood-Mage" if they choose to go for a Magic Build. ( which will later lead them into becoming a "Arch-Vampiric Grand Sorcerer" at max level.) Edit: Thou we allowed "Flavor" when it came to the Higher classes so Players can Tailer their Title better to their Character/Play Style. And give the Options to Cure the Affliction after level 12. (with a fail chance.) Lv13 (60% fail chance), Lv15 (45% fail chance), Lv17 (30% fail chance), Lv19 (15% fail chance), Lv20 (0% fail chance)

I like to think that players who become infected with lycanthropy only gain full control over their beast side after doing an inner journey to commune with or tame the beast side, otherwise they will turn once a month or under certain circumstances and wouldn't be under their own control cause the beast took over. When they are in their beast form, and not in control, it's like a nightmare. They are unable to control themselves and only feeling primal instincts. When they come to they can only remember faint flashes and emotions of what happened while in beast form. For curing lycanthropy: If it is before their first month they can take a potion made of monks wood, which is normally poisonous but when taken by someone infected with lycanthropy it burns away the disease/curse in a painful way that feels like you're dying since a part of you is. But if it's been a month or longer it's a lot more difficult to impossible to remove. Now for those born with the infliction can transform at will with no having to commune with their beast cause they were born that way, tho their emotional state can play a roll like when they get angry they'll start to turn into their beast form. Physiology: Lycanthropes maintain their base humanoid shape but gain extra features associated to their beast.

I only had lycanthropes in the White Wolf setting and in D&D 3.5 /Pathfinder so far and about the change ad clothes, both systems are very specific, so I kept to that. White Wolf has the typical clothes don't change, if you want to carry stuff while in hybrid form, they have to be specifically designed to be carried in that form and you better took them with you, while D&D treats the lycanthropy change as the druids wild shape ability which is again tied to polymorph, which states that the characters gear and clothing becomes magically incorporated into the new form, although the character cannot use them if they require to be worn or specifically activated. So armor, weapons or a decanter of endless water can't be used, while an amulet of natural armor or a ring of deflection still retain the magic abilities they grant. But it really hasn't been much of an issue, I've only ever had a PC who played a wererat rogue in a semi-evil campaign and he was quite feral, so he only ever switched between hybrid and full rat form anyway... although he was allegedly human once and since the rest of the party was made up of a rakshasa sorcerer, a Graveknight and a red half-dragon... the party didn't really care about him acting strange or nomming a few people here and there since he was very useful to them. They all got eventually picked up and enslaved by a mind-flayer anyway and that's where that campaign ended :D

It's often a taboo when a player gets hit by the curse of Lycanthropy, however one of my players, originally a Druid, later multiclassing as a level 2 cleric of Knowledge and the goddess Selune has contracted lycanthropy and is embracing it with their character. The Druid character had some time away from the party, with the player temporarily playing someone who later would become a major villain. During this time away, while back in their homeland got mauled accidentally by a were-bear. I allowed my druid to become one as well, seeking sanctuary with Selune at full moons, but otherwise being able to turn into a bear (which they already often did with wildshape) now enhancing that, including some of the other perks. At first I thought I was cutting myself in my own fingers for allowing a cursed player especially with all the immunities they get, however it's been bringing great roleplay opportunities.

I had a player that really wanted to play a werewolf, so what I did was I gave her wolf form a seperate character sheet. It has higher strength dex and constitution. I sort of used barbarian as a class basis. She can change into the wolf once a day, but otherwise whenever she wants, and on nights with a full moon she has to change regardless of who's around. The drawback is that every 1d12 hours... she has to feed on either a sentient or medium sized and larger creature or she gets a level of exhaustion.

One of my players just got bitten by a werewolf during our last adventure. Their character doesnt yet know he's been infected, but it'll be fun to see that play out. Anyway in my campaign were creatures are feral monsters in their transformed state, and only through intense effort can they overcome that. At first they will have their personalities slowly begin to change and they slowly become more and more evil, and if they can't find a method (either an artifact or a ritual in the campaign) they will continue to fall further into their bestial side. I also put in a somewhat stratified society. There's a clan of were creatures in my campaign that have either managed to control their transformation, or, if they chose to do so, permanently transform into their were form while maintaining their personalities and control. Both of those things are open to the player if they meet this clan and manage to prove themselves worthy to join it.

Nice video, I play a Werewolf in Path Finder, ben playing it like for 3 years now, lots of fun, though my approach was a bit different from what you described, he is a "natural" lykathrope witch means he was born lykanthrope ( an yes that is the rule book ), hes aware when he transform and can do it at any time, the way we balanced the things for the other players is that Im always one lvl below them, has work so far nicely, my group and I had lots of fun whit this character.

for 40k lovers here, maybe a space wolf like asthaetic is good? (minus the power armour of course) those who take the gene seed (or the curse) effectively have to take multiple constitution and will saves to fight the beast within. if they win they remain sane, but if they lose they become a mindless beast. make each ordeal unique to the player - so they cant just calculate their chances of survival?

I once had the players meet a religious cult that was very kind and loved by all. So loved that the townsfolk would give them their children to go to a "school" to became priests of the cult. The players ended up helping them, and in return were invited to join the cult. During the cerimony they found out the cult were actually werewolves, and the children were eaten. The party was invited to join them, blessed rather than cursed (natual lycan), or fight them, killing the "helpfull" cult and getting a chance to be cursed in the process. It was inspired a LOT by Powerwolf.

I once read long ago when researching Lycanthrope myths that the curse can be cured as long as the victim has not tasted human blood. In D&D, I would personally rule that Lycanthropy can be removed as long as the subject has not eaten a member of their own race. This would give new lycanthropes some hope of resolving the curse, but wouldn't reduce it to something as trivial as just throwing a Remove Curse spell on them.

With drawbacks, one sci-fi book series I've been reading has a weretiger protagonist. While he has full control of his shifting, he can't maintain it for more than about a half-hour or so before the tiger instincts start taking over and driving him insane. And when he reverts to his human form, he's *phenomenally* fatigued and has to get a good eight or more hours of sleep - there's times when he keeps going even when he's that tired, but it's pretty clear that all that's keeping him going there is pure willpower and that, without that, he'd have just passed out the moment he returned to human form. Beyond that is the social impact of being a known lycanthrope - if the campaign tends to focus around a single city or settlement (like, say, the Kingmaker Adventure Path in Pathfinder) then the moment word gets out that the character is a lycanthrope then that society is going to start treating them as such. Doubly-so if your setting has multiple moons whose phases don't always line up.

White Wolf had a wonderful set of supernatural RPGs back in the 90s and early 00s. I particularly like Werewolf. The werewolves had different clans that fallowed their own beliefs in how they fit in society. The publisher later on expanded the shape shiftier idea by writing books about 'the others" Werecats (Tygers, lions, panthers, ect), Coyote, Ravens, spiders, snakes, and alligators/crocodiles. Oh right, and bears. The bears were the best because they were pretty chill, and awesome warriors. Each one of these species of were creature had it's own cultural significance, and style to the writing of their source books.

What we do for werewolves is they can change on purpose, BUT, must make an increasingly harder will save to maintain control every minute they are changed. And they must make a HARD will save to turn back, if they fail, the beast takes over in that case as well. It's used in desperation now, not as a calm tactic.

In the Ravenloft setting for 3rd edition D&D at least, there’s a ruling that were-creatures need to consume a certain amount of raw meat daily or else they take nonlethal damage from starvation. Also I would personally house rule were-creatures only being animals that can eat meat so you can’t have broken bullshit like were-elephants or things like that.

I was level 8, so no problem. Except in that game the rule was if you took any damage you needed to roll a Wisdom save to maintain control of lycanthropy. I failed that save and immediately transformed into a wolf. I could no longer use any of my psionic abilities that combat.

you physically change without magic (at least normally, it's a transformation, not a polymorph) with i think i would rule would have a serious physical strain. transforming would require a con save to make it all the way though on command. wisdom saves to suppress it when you see the moon (in general), are not very well fed or smell something very tasty to the were creature. intelligence saves to be able to distinguish friends from foes. it would give you a strength buff, but controlling that new strength would be hard to control.

You could require players that want to keep their gear and clothes with them to buy special clothes and gear that are more expesive and wear out easier, but are baggy enough that they fit ok in their were-form and have clips and such for tucking in the extra lengths so they can wear it in their human-form. On top of this you could have npcs that know this style of clothing so wearing these convenient clothes could give away your secret to beings that do or don't like were-beings.

I got this idea for an adventure can anyone tell me if it sounds good? The party finds a scared noble in the local tavern, his clothes kinda messy but still way more fancy looking then the usual patrons. When he eventually leaves and the if the party follows they find him getting cornered in an alley by other nobles and killed, if the party intervenes they find out all of these nobles are wererats and the guy from the tavern was made a warerate by accident and the others were trying to get rid of loose ends. The whole cities guards get sent in on weird arbitrary missions and they are letting the wererat population grow uncontested. The ending would be when the party finds out the queen is a wererat too and the king is just a shapeshifter that follows her instructions and she is waiting for her son to come back from some trip and then she will unleash hell on the city turning everyone either to a wererat or a corpse.

I personally like the idea where the pc or npc has to fufill a couple requirements to transform back, and has to transform once a month. My requirements are simply that the lycan is blindingly hungry and had to eat a creature of suitable size. The only exemptions from this are creatures that have the lycan’s smell such as close friends and family, but aside from that they go for the nearest thing and eat it on the spot. This can leave the character completely out of the fight, but I also use the idea that they can become accustomed to their new affliction. Basically they can choose to invest time and possibly feats into learning to control their transformations to do it at will, albeit still requiring eatig something, and retain more of themselves after the transformation. Their equipment is of course forfeit but that’s just how I like it.

My view is that the benefits of lycanthropy are how the curse works. As the victim gives into their new desires and powers that is when they become less human (or elf, or dwarf, or..). This should involve some alignment changes and, potentially, turn the PC into a monster. The loss of a PC as a player character and their transformation into a monster controlled by the GM should be what the players seek to avoid. Whether this is through removing the curse or learning to control it, is up to the player/GM. Otherwise lycanthropy isn’t a curse but a “boon” (which is fine if this is the intention).

I am very hyped for the Illithid video. Surrealist, cosmic horrors of a species that subsist upon the house of thought itself, morphed into maturity through the conversion of another mortal being. They enslave, consume, & scheme. And that is them at BASE. Let alone any number of interesting progressions of power, such as an illithid lich, or an ulitharid psion, perhaps an illithid slayer that craves the brains of dragons? Whatever path you imagine them in, they are always terrifying foes to behold. Once your PCs begin thinking they're hot shit, that they defeated the lichlord and freed their countryman, knock their egos down a few *dozen* pegs by having illithids turn their attention to them, and watch as despair overtakes everything the PCs strove to protect.

But that's just it: Lycanthropic beings are most often a Human (or humanoid) who has been somehow cursed, infected, or otherwise infused with a beastly half. They are human, and yet they are some savage monster as well, and the person inside knows what other humans would do if they discovered there was a monster in their midst, and so a lycanthrope would either hide the fact that it was a were-creature, or attempt to gain distance from civilization, for fear of being hunted and put to death. And if it does stay near people, most attacks will be fatal, as not to introduce competition or to alert the society to the presence of were wolves by increasing the chances for a sighting. Of all the creatures I could think of being associated with lycanthropy, the were-rat is the only one I see commonly spreading into any kind of colonies, and that speaks more to the nature of rats. Of course, if you get into White Wolf or Vampire: The Masquerade, there are indeed societies of werewolves and various other creatures, and they tend towards tribes and clans, once again still not in packs or gangs. It can even be hereditary in certain lore. Oh. And I don't think the term 'animal side' is appropriate. Humans are animals. Where a bear has sharp teeth and claws, we have opposable thumbs and big brains. But we are still animals, part of the animal kingdom, and it is more fit to say that the violence of the beast is a manifestation of the primal animal which man has tried endlessly and futilely to suppress, and it is this attempt to distinguish between the man and the animal which causes such an explosive dichotomy. If the human animal and inner animal are in balance and at peace, the lycanthrope will be no different in regardless of the skin it wears.

For my game one of my players contracted lycanthropy and instead of taking away control of his character I let him keep control of it and he didn't want to get rid of his lycanthropy because he wanted to see what was like to role-play as a werewolf. so the downside I gave him was every time he saw a fresh humanoid corpse you would have to make it will save. If he failed that will save, he lost control and would transform to do his hybrid form and begin to eat on said corpse no matter where was. I felt like that was a good downside for letting him keep control of his character.

This episode reminded me of a funny story from back when i was still s LARPer. We made short work of our attackers, there were only 26 of them against our 13. Bad idea to go bothering barbarians though they did manage to use assassins to successfully kill my quest giving NPC. I quickly avenged her death but as i approached her seemingly dead body and saw her wounds heal themselves before my eyes as she gained her feet. The NPC revealed to us that she was in fact a werewolf and we were stunned. As she came to finally produce the god Bashu's magic mead recipe she'd promissed i then cut her off saying ''Though i accept your reward for having completed the quest you've given us, keep the recipe for as a true upholder of the god of glory i must choose a greater recompense for the boon given by the mead will last but a single day and kill whomsoever tastes of it again. So you will bite all of my band and make us into werewolves, as you are, that we may be unstoppable in glorious battle forevermore!" The whole group let out a roaring cheer. I continued "Do this or i will cut you down again and again until you do so!" The group, laughing proudly, surrounded the poor girl who'se face was drained of all color. After a moment of utter confoundment a spark ignited in her eyes and she said "If ever i was capable of bestowing such a gift i gladly would but granting the werewolf's mark is only possible by those naturaliy born so, as my late husband who made me. The greatest gift i've left to give is this recipe. This is all you'll get!" The dead assassins and demon worshipers were laughing their heads off and we all started applauding the NPC's comeback as she stormed out of our camp with a huge smile on her face.
