When my mom lived with me, she was a hoarder. As she transitioned to a nursing home, I had to go through all her things. I thought about what my daughter would have to go through if anything happened to me. It motivated me to get rid of stuff that was meaningless. Definitely start one room at a time.

My parents aren't hoarders in the sense they don't have trash or that sort of thing in their home. However, my mom has a shopping addiction and the house is packed with way more than any two people could need or use. They are now too old to deal with it all so it will fall to me someday. I'm not going to do that to my children!

I just finished watching a video where someone was clearly getting hungry and thirsty and stressed and I was thinking “get something to eat!” Doing ANYTHING when hungry/thirsty/needing the bathroom is unpleasant. So glad you commented on comfort :)

Can you talk about the shame we feel while decluttering? I almost always feel that, plus I hide the process from my husband, mainly because it’s all my excess stuff... I end up feeling guilty, overwhelmed, overeating sweets and biting my nails!!! Would love to see a psychological perspective on this exhausting endless process!! Thanks!! Love your channel:):)

I am trying to declutter, purge and pack to move out of my home and downsize to an apartment! I’ve been in my house for 34 years! I have done a lot of this work over the past 2 years- 2 yard sales, a flea market, donations +++, selling on Marketplace , giving away and trash! I still have stuff! Can’t wait to do this again!

I had a paper monster. I collected some of it in a small box. I had a little gift bag inside the box and a letter opener. Open mail; anything with my name goes in the bag to go to the shred pile; anything else goes back in the box to get thrown out. It took about a week or two to kill the paper monster completely, doing it one little box at a time while watching TV after work. But it’s done. It’s all ready to be shredded. I am so freaking thrilled. I had useless pay stubs from five employers and twelve years ago. Yeesh.

I moved out of my dad's house about 6 years ago but I was going to be living in 1 room so left a lot of stuff. My dad is very laid back but now wants that room back so he can have an art studio in retirement. I'm working fulk time and living some distance away, but every time I get over there I clear one area. So far 4 carrier bags of books and 4 bin bags if clothes donated. Next is the dressing table/craft cupboard...

I definitely agree with emptying out the room first! It gives you that instant rush. Then you can fill it with only the things you need and that spark joy. Well this worked for me bc we have a basement so I just moved stuff into boxes down there. Now I’m going to get rid of basically everything down there bc I haven’t looked for it or needed it.

Just wanted to share that it's so important to put advice like this out there. I had such a messy room as a kid and my parents telling me to clean it was sp ineffective. I just DIDN'T KNOW HOW. Then my grandmother showed me. Basically we threw away a lot of stuff. My mind was blown, throwing away stuff had never occurred to me! It was such a wonderful experience and started a long journey of learning to keep clean. And i can only recommend you try it! It might still take a long time to really learn new habits, but it's worth it.

Several years ago, a tree fell on our house. Since we had to clear everything out, to give the contractors room to work, and we definitely didn't want to put it all back, we decluttered several car loads full. I am grateful that the tree fell on out house. We turned our bedroom into a library, and moved into one of the smaller bedrooms.

Thank you - i am so over how people make out that you should be able to do a whole house or even room with in a day. Those that need to declutter more then other will never be able to do it that way. I cluttered because i would feel bad if i gave things away that was given to me. I was always made to feel - bad if i sad no to people offering thing and worse if i gave it away. My family would alway do this then they would say how messy my house was and put me down for that. I could not win. So i gave up. NOW - I do not talk to family - i now feel I can get read of the thing they dumped onto me.

We are making use of this time of not being able to go anywhere to declutter. We currently have several boxes packed by the back door for Goodwill and a couple of boxes to give to two friends for their children. Yes, despite the fact my "children" are 33 and 36, we still have children's items to get rid of. My parents are elderly and in poor health, living in a 3600 sq. ft. house FULL of stuff. They should have decluttered and downsized 10 years ago and now it's too late. I'm dreading having to deal with it all and have determined not to do that to my own children. We are in our late 50s and are making plans to downsize to a smaller, more easily maintained home in a few years. I don't aspire to minimalism but I do want the things we keep to be well organized and easy to enjoy and take care of. I have a Facebook group for productivity, organization, self-development, etc. I'm going to share this series there. I know many of the members will benefit from it.

This type of fear kept me from decluttering for years until I started “quarantining” sentimental items (I think that’s the term The Minimal Mom uses). Pack them in a box, label them “Donate” and put a date on the box for 6 weeks, 6 months or a year from now (or whatever amount of time you are comfortable with). Store the box somewhere out of sight and if you have any regrets you can remove that item from the box. Then on the written date, take the whole box straight to a donation center. I can honestly say I’ve only ever retrieved one item, and I never regretted letting go of anything that was donated.
