Thank you! That little tip about the trim was just what I needed!... and it also seems it's probably best to do the trims first and THEN cut in the colour on the wall. We live and learn.

As a pro painter we always do trim before walls. So much easier to cut wall into trim versas trim into wall.

It depends on colors. If the wall paint is light and the trim is very dark, I do the walls first and vice versa, otherwise you can have problems with coverage. Scoring the seam between the wall and the trim with a putty knife also helps to keep the paint from flowing from one surface to the other.

I printed out your PDF document and I read it each time we do a room to make sure I do not miss steps. Thank you so much. Our home is becoming more and more beautiful each day thanks to your videos and shared knowledge.

I find it easier to paint the trim first, particularity if the trim is a different color than your paint color. I find it easier to cut the wall paint to the trim then the other way around. Not knocking you though, your brush work is great. Painting the trim to the center was a great tip!

Roller pans don't hold enough paint and need constant refilling, they are easy to step on and spill, and it's much harder to get the roller to "roll" on the pan as opposed to using a ramp/grid in a 5-gallon bucket--the grid really grabs the roller and helps distribute the paint evenly on the roller cover. Plus 5-gallon buckets have handles to grab and move them around the room as you go. I do keep a few pans around to use on small jobs like painting a door or trying on colors.

Carefully scoring a shallow groove between trim and wall with a flexible putty knife will create a groove that will act like a dam between the trim paint and the wall, as long as the paint isn't loaded up to much in the seam. If there is too much paint build up between the trim and the wall, clean up those seams BRFORE you do the walls. You can use the same technique between the ceiling and walls, but use a duller knife to prevent tearing through the sheetrock tape.

@@MathCuriousity don't forget to press firmly. I can't stress that enough. For a nice crisp line, leave no air bubbles. Take your time if you're new as you roll the tape out watching the line. Stay as straight as you can. Use a putty knife and firmly glide it across the tape afterwards.

Great series John - well done and very helpful. I have an older house with plaster walls; the door trim is a 3/4" half round covering part of the door frame and the plaster joint. It is a simple detail - but difficult to paint. I have tried free handing and I have tried taping. I haven't been satisfied with the result yet. I am currently repainting a room. I have the first coat of paint on the walls and the ceiling is finished with 2 coats. I am planning to do the trim now (two coats - freehand) followed by the final wall coat freehand that I will attempt to finish up to this half round trim at the doors. Am I on the right track here or do you have any recommendations?

Again great stuff and advice, however going to the extent of removing the door complete as I deffo would agree to do, including the hinges,I would also recommend removing all hardware inc door handles and even the door latches as easier to paint if removed than masking around them, darn sight easier refitting them after painting than reinstating the door complete with hinges (been there got T shirt) it's easy getting the fecker off but complete nighmare putting the bugger back on!! Ha!

Everyone has their own method.I am a professional painter and ALWAYS paint the trim first other than the baseboard.I do the baseboard last to cover any splatter and it's easier to cut a straight line that way.If installing new baseboard I like to put at least one coat paint on it before it goes onto wall.Again,not saying this guy is wrong.

WELL ... to be honest - It is 10 times easier and faster for a home owner - to always paint the trim FIRST ! you can allow the paint to cover a 1/2 inch to to an inch or more of the wall . Then when you paint the wall it far easier to cut a clean line to the trim with the wall color . and YES I painted a lot of rooms with working at a high school for 4 years , 10 years painting college dorm rooms and my brothers and sisters and friends homes and condos

If you were painting an entire room. Wouldn't it be easier to paint all the trim first then tape it off if necessary to roll? Then edge the ceiling and roll it, then edge the walls and roll them? Or am I missing something?

For the interior door, do you have preference in painting it leaning against the or flat on top of two sawhorses?
@jordanxfile
@jordanxfile 5 жыл бұрын
Flat on top of sawhorses, is definitely easier in terms of application. Especially, if you have a rails and stiles kind of door, because those kinds of doors can have paint pooling on the inner edges and corners where the panel meets the rails and stiles. For a flat door, since you can use a roller all over, it wouldn't matter that much. One more thing, everyone may not have enough room in the area they're painting, since keeping the door leaning against a wall saves floor space, it might be preferred. If you have enough room to lay it on sawhorses though, that would be the way to go. Plus, laying it flat makes it easier to paint all four sides of the door while you're doing the front or back. PS: I'm not a painter, but I have painted all the woodwork and all ceilings and walls in my apartment more than once.
