We have ours set up in our living room. We have tried a few different configurations and the most effective one was when we had access to the crate while in the pen. After watching this video I am going to put it back together that way again! We also have a crate in our bedroom and one in living room, but I think we will stick to just the living room and cover with sheet for sleeping at night. Everything time she moves or decides to chew her bone it wakes us up.

If we are supposed to be keeping the crate closer to us at night in the first few days when the puppy comes home, and that the crate should be inside the play pen, does that mean we should also set up the pen in our bedroom as well? Or is it a terrible idea to set up the crate and play pen in the living room and just move the crate to our bedroom at night? thanks!

My puppy will be coming to me "litter box trained" from the breeder. As my puppy is going to be going through service dog training with the eventual goal of being able to travel with me (I have a disability that effects my mobility and I also have asthma) it is important that she learns that there will be times that she is asked to "go potty" indoors (like on a cruise ship, during blizzards when its -30 degrees out and I can't be out in that weather). Some trainers do not seem to realize that there are times when you may need to leave your dog for a longer than desirable time and they shouldn't feel physically uncomfortable because they are trying to "hold it" or feel ashamed that they had an accident. My beagle is 15 years old. For the past 3 years I have left puppy pads down for him to use if he needs it during the night. Maybe once a week he will need to use it. It's a simple clean up and he doesn't have to feel like he did anything wrong.

We use the crate for night time, and the play pen during the day. It seems like she enjoys being in the play pen much more and goes in there willingly. She will go into the crate at night time, but she is not very happy about it. The crate and play pen are in separate rooms. I am sure it is because we conditioned her to enjoy play pen much more. Would you recommend letting her sleep in the play pen and just getting rid of the crate ?

@alissahague4779 pretty good. He's 6 months now. Litterbox trained. Doesn't really bark or cry in the crate. Mainly does so when he sees me come home and tells me he wants to play. I've taught him sit, lay, and come but not much else since I've been busy. I can't imagine not having him but it was a little hard at first. He was territorial and didn't like me. Fetch helped him share and come to me more. And he learned that he could rely on me when he is scared

I came up with a unique way to keep my puppy from chewing up her puppy pads. I use one of those clear very low plastic containers, the pads fit it perfectally and she just jumps over the little lip and she doesn’t pull around her pads. She’s a ShihTzu and about six to seven lbs. The first three days were difficult but after that she never pulled the pads out or chew on them and they don’t slide around! It’s really worked perfect for me. In her area , which is 10 x10, her bed is there, her food and water and a play pads Where she can play. I had to have everything in one space because I’m disabled and needed her to have everything she needs if I have to leave her in there for more than a few hours during the day. Night time is a breeze. She gets up and pees and goes back to bed. I have a curtían blocking off this space so if she needs less stimulation that is possible. It’s like a dream puppy space and for ME it works fantastic.

Hello great advice and videos - Michelle, My labrador puppy is 4 months old, I live in an apartment compound with lots of grass and a park near by. Her create is on the balcony which acts as her pen.She is quite happy to play and sleep there while I am at work. However, (there is always a but...) when she is in there while I am doing choirs or watching tv she continually barks. I have tried the praising and giving her treats when she is quiet and then releasing her only when she is quiet. She does not seem anxious just likes to bark and tell me she wants to be with me.

We're glad you're choosing to get a puppy pen! Using a puppy pen is a great way to help your puppy stay safe while you are busy with household chores and you can't keep your eyes on them 100% of the time. Puppies need to learn to start spending time away from you while keeping themselves busy (in a safe way). A puppy pen is not for sleeping and napping. We keep our puppies in a crate for all naps and at bedtime. The space is more cozy and this helps them sleep instead of staying in play mode. This video can tell you about one possible set up for a pen. You may choose to keep the crate in/near it or it's fine to keep it separate too. For more information about managing space in the home and yard to minimize accidents, check out this great video. Managing Space to Decrease Accidents: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r993e8KV0Z6xp6c.html

@@HowToTrainADreamDogplease help…. Can i keep my 2lb Maltese in her playpen set up with her crate and food/water and peeped during the day and at night just close the door to her crate? Or is it ok to have a separate crate in my room next to me to keep her from getting anxiety? There are so many different schools of thought i dont know which one will work better! It’s actually giving me anxiety and making me second guess my decision to go through with gettin her:(. I know keeping her in a crate that is closed at night is teaching her to hold her bladder. I have some questions that may be dumb to ask, but hey, I know nothing: 1. Can my puppy sleep on my bed with me at night? 2. If the puppy cannot, then can I put a dog blanket in the kennel for him? 3. Can my puppy have a toy where he sleeps? I have a soft toy, but did not know if that was wise to do. 4. If I cannot afford a pen, can I use a small room or should I improvise somehow?

Wow--you are a great/smooth speaker and teacher! School kids would be lucky if you were their instructor. I'm getting a Bichon Frise puppy, so he will be small. I thought about an eight-sided pen with the crate inside it in our kitchen because it has a tile floor (other rooms have carpet or hardwood). You show either a smallish rectangle pen or a six-sided model. Do you think an octagon is way too big for that size of a puppy? Also, the kitchen is a more active and busy room in our house (no young kids, though). A nearby Sunroom is more isolated and has carpet. What's best--a tiled kitchen with more commotion OR a carpeted Sunroom but quieter?

We have an older dog and are hoping to get another pup by may. I plan to have the crate in my room for bedtime and the playpen downstairs in the lounge for the day time so each dog has their own space and when I leave they are separated. I am going to get foam puzzle mats to protect the floorboards. For the bed, we have an indoor dog kennel bed that my dog doesn't use. I hope the pup has a favourite stuffed animal ike our dog Oscar does and that was the one he hasn't ruined. I also plan to give many teething toys to the pup whilst in the crate. Also what about grass toilet pads? I have heard they are better than puppy pads as the texture will get them used to going outside more than puppy pads.

He has always been so hard to cope with....screaming in crate despite the recommended training, crying to go out to loo several times a night despite water recommended restrictions, barking at five o clock every morning and so so attention seeking! Your videos are wonderful thank you! Many people have mentioned having the pup in the bedroom and progressively moving them out towards the area you would like them to sleep in down the track. Do you have a video covering this? Our room doesn't allow for the crate + play pen set up + it's on carpet and there isn't much room in there because of bed + other furniture. I was thinking of having the crate in the bedroom at night and then moving it to the living space during the day + adding the play pen (just for day time). Does shifting the crate from bedroom at night, to the living room confuse the puppy? Would also love to know your thoughts about, your thoughts about starting him off in a crate within the area where he will be sleeping down the track (in the living room). I plan on setting an alarm the first couple of weeks for every two - three hours to proactively take him out to the toilet.

You're on the right track! Sometimes you have to set the crate up closer to you at first until the puppy has settled into his new home. Then you can move it to a different spot that works better for your home. Each puppy is different so you really have to see what his tolerance is and try to keep it a positive experience as he settles in. This video can give you some great ideas on how others have set up their crate and pen: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nJ9_lLt63cq8eoU.html

Great question! We recommend using linoleum to protect your floors, and it's perfect for an easy clean up, too! You can put a dog bed in the pen for your pup to lay comfortably on, but be sure to supervise so you can prevent your dog from ingesting the stuffing when they enter into the teething phase and become more curious.

Potty training is my #1 priority for when I get my pup in a few weeks, but there's some things I'm confused about. 1) My puppy will only be 8 weeks old. So is it pointless to try to start potty training if they can't hold it for long in a crate? 2) My puppy hasn't had all his vaccines or been introduced to flea treatments yet, so isn't it a bad idea to start teaching him to go outside? 3) So doesn't that mean I'm kinda forced to just let him use his pee pads and wait for him to get a little older to start really training? Every video I've watched on crate training seems to be with older pups (5+ months)

I’ve noticed the same thing. I got my first puppy last week and I’ve opted to using a puppy pad in her play pen and a grass patch on the patio. I let her on the patio every 1-2 hours and she uses it. I’m planning on doing outdoor potty training in a few months. Congratulations on your new puppy! 💗

My puppy does this although not as bad anymore. What I worked on was leaving his line of slight for 3 seconds then treat, 5 seconds then treat. So on and so forth. I also worked on not reacting to his crying. It’s HARD. If it’s whining ignore it if it’s crying I put him (gently and calmly) in his crate and start over. He is better in the playpen when he is tired I mean exhausted so trying playing fetch with your puppy until you can take him out. Hope this helps!

Why would a bed encourage accidents? I understand the destruction aspect just not sure how it would cause accidents.
@HowToTrainADreamDog

Dogs often seek out soft, squishy surfaces for potty breaks. The bed will also absorb the pee so he doesn't have to lie in it. So the bed can make peeing in the crate less unpleasant.

I've had four puppies over the years over the past 30 years and we always covered their crate at night. This not only helped with distractions but it also created a better 'den' sense for the pups. They loved it so much that, when they no longer needed to sleep in their crate, they still preferred to be under covers wherever they were sleeping. I have a 14 year old dog and am getting a new puppy next month and I will cover his crate at night, too.

I live in an apartment. quitge a roomy one in Singapore and have had dogs all my life. My father started me of doing conformation with Boxers and later drifted to Shutzund or IPO in my teen. I started of with APBT, Bull Mastiff and my last dog train in Shutzund was a Rottweiler. As you can see I do have experienced with dogs.I currently have a British Bulldog for almost 2 weeks now she left the UK when she was 3 months 2 weeks, but I find training her pretty difficult. I keep my training sessions very short, about 10 minutes at most but she would eithe just lay down or fall asleep. I was teaching her toretrueve today and she fell asleep a few minutes into training. Never has this happened to me before. My dogs are normally potty trained in less than a week and I was using primitive things. just newspaper. I don't cover the whole room with it. just one pice big enough for one dog. I was going to try with this British Bulldog and had to buy deodoriser, scent market, pen, pee trays... literally the works, but she still make mistakes 80% of the time. I even change the colour of the pee pad to white as recomended by the breeder, but it did not work. Sje is only ok with the crate training. she will shine for a few minute and fall asleep. she will only start barking and whining if he did it in her crate... I stop giving water after 7PM and also cut back her meals to an earlier time slot, and now, I just let her loose in my room. she is quite good in the sence that she doesn't chew on things and if I feel that she might chew on something, I will dab it with the 'Last Dab', the hottest sauce around. so the furniture and wired are safe. I just cannot get her to potty train like I did with all my other dogs, people say Bulldogs are pretty slow. is that really true? I will be gettig a Cane Corso this April and I can tell from statistics that I will have a much easier time with conformation and obedience trial. I won't be teaching him or her Shutzund and want to concentrate on conformation and obedience. Do you have any advice one how to potty train this Bulldog? I have tried everythin from my 30 plus years of dog training. Maybe you have some unorthadox way that would help me? :)

If your puppy is young and still teething, it's best not to have beds which could become chewing hazards or potty spots. If she's still getting used to her crate, we recommend it for all nights and naps right now. When she gets older you can start to relax on her sleeping spot.

I think using baby cages with a door makes for a nice big place for them to have in your home with a bed crate inside. I use a plastic tub with a hole cut in the side and a puppy paper inside. The paper can’t come out, but in three days my puppy was trained. I rather have a container that holds their puppy paper and doesn’t come out, and they just go in the hole and go potty. I don’t worry about cleaning up messes because there are none. I’m disabled and not able to take my puppy out all the time. This idea allowed me to have a pet. I give her. Large area to run Around in and my puppies bed is in there and she climbs in there and sleep a long long time everyday. She only get playful when we’re outside. She knows in doors in quiet calm time. It works perfectly for me. Everyone who has seen my videos of her love how I have her area set up and how easy she is to care for. I keep her area kind of dark and calm. She spends at least 10 plus hours a day in there with no crying
