Anyone else think Hozier shines the most in simple, lo-fi recordings? I much prefer these live recordings to their studio counterparts.

***** Agreed! I think the keyboard, backup vocals and the overall musical arrangements take away from what is best about Hozier. THIS is where he is best. I'd love to experience him performing live in a setting like this.

My interpretation of this song is that while the woman was feeling a moment of weakness, she goes to dig up the past that she has already buried. This past will hurt her if she digs it up. But while digging she finds him at his lowest point. He was dark and cold and dead in the dirt but and she was on her way to that point but they found each other and chose to not tell why they were in that dark place at the same time.

I will not ask you where you came from I will not ask and neither should you Honey just put your sweet lips on my lips We should just kiss like real people do I knew that look dear Eyes always seeking Was there in someone That dug long ago So I will not ask you Why you were creeping In some sad way I already know So I will not ask you where you came from I would not ask and neither would you Honey just put your sweet lips on my lips We should just kiss like real people do I could not ask you where you came from I could not ask and neither could you Honey just put your sweet lips on my lips We could just kiss like real people do

I love that while this song is about a very fantastical situation, having your lover dig you up from the earth, it resonates so well with the experience of battling insecurity when you find love. The character in this song is questioning why this person was digging in the first place, but ultimately gives up on asking because they are just happy to be loved. It is much like wondering why the person who loves you would have even been interested in someone like you and what the actual intentions were. I really love this song.

This Song has become my good cry or play it 500 times in a row song. I’m a retired if you can be, adult film worker. I did it for over 20 years and we are all a little broken. When describing to civilians about the work I have often described how we try and kiss like real people do. It’s like we are not real people to ourselves and the viewers. And for me at least its kind of an unspoken thing not to ask how or why the other person ( the female) performer is doing the work also. So the hook just really gets me every time... I will not ask you, neither should you😇🙏🥲

How incredibly refreshing. An extraordinarily rare thing in music videos: no quick cuts, and a stationary camera - none of that slow swooping/exaggerated-overdoing-the-hand-held-feel-on-purpose bullshit. Person filming this actually respects the viewer enough to not treat us as if we have the attention span than a 3 year old.

this song is quite simple in retrospect but for some reason, i hold it so close to my heart. it's been my FAVORITE song for probably 3 years now, topping #1 on spotify the last two years. it's the first song on my queue when i get ready to go to bed and it's honestly such a calming song. it makes me feel like i'm being held close, warmth with someone. it both reminds me of a fall day at a cabin, sitting by a fire at 7 am with a lover and exchanging secrets we've never felt comtorable telling others but it also reminds me of a hot summer night, staying up until 3 am and sitting on the porch with your person as you lock eyes. nothing has to be said, the song speaks it all. this song will be nostalgic for me in years to come and i think i'll always listen to it and look back, thinking about how personal it was to me.

Hozier is the best wingman ever. I taught myself how to play this song a few months ago and I just played it to the girl I think of when i usually play the song alone. we kissed. i just had my first kiss and it was heavenly. thank u Hozier. thank u for making wonderful music.

my interpretation its about a guy who falls in love with someone who is damaged from a sexual assault and shes now cautious and uncomfortable with intimacy and how hes slowly realizing what happened to her and doesn't want to ask her about it or rush into doing anything that's why it changes from "i will not" to "i would not " to i "i could not"

Is this what Heaven is? Sitting on a grassy hillside watching the sun set, while Hozier serenades you with his guitar? Because that's what it should be.

This is my favorite song. It has been for years. I like all kinda of music, Jazz, moe town, rock n roll, classic Elvis, The Lumineers, and even Ed Sheeran. I was raised with a grand piano in my home and a very musical family. However Hozier transcends the world of modern music. It’s like his music, his songs, bring me back down to earth and ground me. This song in particular. This is the most beautiful and raw song I’ve ever heard. It’s so natural and every time I hear it I feel like I’m falling in love. I feel like I should run outside and grab the earth and the dirt and just embrace it. This song is truly the most beautiful I’ve ever heard. Thank you Hozier.

i know you commented this 3 years ago but i just want you to know, it's also my absolute favorite song and has been for years (probably since 2017, when i first heard it) and it's just so peaceful. hozier's voice is so beautiful and calming, the way the words of the song come out and the way it's pronounced. you can FEEL the song. i've watched this video so many times, i can't even count and every single time i hear the strings of that guitar in the beginning, a indescribable feeling comes over my body. serotonin? peace? i'm not sure. this song means so much to me-- it's got me through so much and has been there in my darkest times.

Love either blossoms into blissful reciprocity or nostalgia. This song is perfect to me. It is eerily reminiscent of a night I shared with someone. We kissed in the dirt, and for a moment we found what we were looking for.

"why were you diggin what did you bury before those hands pulled me from the earth.." My take on the lyrics: they found each other in a dark part of life and brought each other out of it not that she literally dug him up after burying another

Although that would be interesting if she loved him so much that she made a deal, a soul for a soul, and brought him back, and he's saying that their past doesn't matter, just enjoy the present and the future.

This is so comforting... Im 18, an age when future plans are so intimidating and scary. But while watching this video and listening to Hozier's soft voice, things like success and peer pressure no longer haunt me that much. 'cause happiness is just as simple as a day out camping and waiting for sunset. What is success if there is no such moments in life?

Hozier progresses from "I will not ask and neither SHOULD you" to "I will not ask and neither WOULD you" to "I will not ask and neither COULD you" I interpret this progression as a growth in closeness and vulnerability that the couple share. "Should" is a clear direction which I read as - do not ask me "Would" indicates belief which I read as - I trust that you won't ask me about my past and make me revisit it "Could" shows vulnerability and realisation which I read as - situations that brought you here to this dark and cold and lonely place scare me. I love you and even though I want to know what happened, I am too scared to ask because I won't be able to fix that hurt. I understand that same goes for you, this is why you could not ask about my past. Both of them feel like they are not "real people" as they have had so much taken out of them because of the tough situations they went through. They feel empty and cold. But being with the other person, makes them want to be like "real people" and have a chance at happiness like "real people" do.
