Hozier - Swan Upon Leda - listen now: hozier.lnk.to/swanuponledaID
Egyptian journalist and author Mona Eltahawy once referred to the global systems that control and endanger women as the world's "oldest form of occupation."
Ever since hearing her speak in Dublin, I wanted to explore that thought in a piece.
I wrote Swan Upon Leda in Ireland a year ago and recorded it recently with producer Jenn Decilveo. We were tracking it in studio when the news came through of Roe v. Wade being overturned. I felt there was an opportunity to offer some show of solidarity.
We're reminded again by the protests in Iran that progressivism is a global movement. the recent pushbacks against civil liberties and human rights respect no boundaries or borders, and like all acts of control, violence and indeed all forms of occupation, their legacies can be immeasurable in both the personal and political spheres.
Of all the songs coming from my 3rd album "Unreal Unearth", I wanted to offer this song at this time. I’ll be making a donation to Mayday, AidAccess, Plan C and Amnesty International, organizations working toward ensuring women and pregnant people can gain safe access to reproductive healthcare and civil rights. Click the links below to read about their work and contribute to their funds should you be in a position to do so.

Lyrics:
A husband waits outside
A crying child pushes a child into the night
She was told he would come this time
Without leaving so much as a feather behind
To enact at last the perfect plan
One more sweet boy to be butchered by men
But gateway to the world
Was still outside the reach of him
Would never belong to angels
Had never belonged to men
The swan upon Leda
Empire upon Jerusalem
A grandmother smuggling meds
Past where the god child-soldier Setanta stood dead
Our graceful turner of heads
Weaves through the checkpoints like a needle and thread
Someone’s frightened boy waves her on
She offers a mother’s smile and soon she’s gone
The gateway to the world,
The gun in a trembling hand,
Where nature unmakes the boundary
The pillar of myth still stands,
The swan upon Leda
Occupier upon ancient land
But gateway to the world
Was still outside the reach of him
Would never belong to angels
Had never belonged to men

It's a song about the greek god Zeus raping Leda in the form of a swan resulting in her getting pregnant with the greek hero Clytemnestra. It's actually a very tragic song and it's quite hard for me to listen to.

I gave birth this summer to a baby boy under a somewhat heartbreaking environment. I couldnt listen past the first verse because it reminded me of my trauma. I listened to the whole thing just now and I don't understand the entire lyrics. But this song is like a warm blanket of air on me, its the first to heal my wound with a soft touch, and in a moment I glimpsed into the future and saw what seems like the beginning of many healings.

Describing this song as a warm blanket is so accurate, I cant help but feel comforted when I listen to it too :) And the meaning of the whole song is just- beautiful, beautifully tragic almost? if you look up "Meaning behind Swan Upon Leda" you can find articles that pick apart the lyrics and expose what exactly they mean. I read them like 3 times because its so interesting and meaningful, it touched my heart on such a deep level I cant even convey.

🤔 The concept of freedom is _so_ abstract for the human mind. What _is_ freedom, freedom of mind, freedom of body, freedom of spirit, freedom of choice, etc.? Each individual understands freedom differently because we are unique. 😌

As much as I believe I understand this now, I know how I am. With all of Hozier’s music, it will be years until I can fully grasp the weight of this song. He is so powerful in that way, how we can truly think we know, only for our minds to be blown away once again in the years to come. I’ve loved him since I was young, and I’ll love him till I’m old. It isn’t so often we are given such talented, loving, and inspiring people. Hozier, if you ever see this, know your fans truly love you and the mark you have made on this world won’t fade away so easily.

Idk how else to describe it, this song sounds like being held by someone out in an open field in the spring, peacefully watching the rising sun turn the morning dew into fog; but yet also sounds like someone holding a mother back as a sorrowful scream rips through her lungs as her child is torn away from her arms. It's like the peace of finally believing and *knowing* for a fact that everything will be okay, but the tearful release of all the pain you've been holding in all this time.

My mind has been in a sort of a haze recently, only occasionally having bursts of reality but this song (even though the subject matter of the song doesn't really connote too much in my personal life), brings a little needed clarity and a little more sense into my mind. So applicable to any situation and is just so moving and quietly empowering (plus...the lesbians have been finally rehydrated!!)

Sending so much love and light to you from across the globe. Can't stop crying to this gorgeous song... Hozier connects the human Spirit to this lifetime in a way that is honest, humane and acknowledges all that represents this human life experience, breathlessly beautiful and sad at the same time ❤‍🔥looking forward to his new album.

The emotion and imagery all of these pieces can capture is astounding but the message always rings true.

Catching my breath to write this. It’s. PERFECT. 😌 Now This- This is a Hozier video. With all the marvel & artistry & storytelling and wonder so fitting for one of the most beautiful songs (yes no it’s true) ever made. One thing, who is the artist? There is no credit in the posted notes. Andrew its a joy to see you find collaborators that fit your vision. Keep on man, be so so proud & happy all. Thx for sharing your joy. ✨🌚🏹
