I love that Hozier is literally the sweetest, most gentle man you can find on this earth, but whenever he sings this song he is so full of passion and ANGER he legit becomes scary

@KaleidoscopeMagic5 жыл бұрын
I agree with what "piscesfem" says too (I just found her comment). She's got it nearly all figured out, except about the lyric's "sick" reference. That part is not about original sin, it's about something else very sad that happened in the guy's childhood that he's trying to forget about - that is why the lyrics say "only then I am clean".. the lady helps him to forget the ugliness. And you're welcome. :)

Hozier does two things when he performs this song live that I love so much: 1. On "shrine of your light" he sings it as straight 8th notes live whereas in the official recording "shrine of your" is a dotted eighth/swing rhythm. Straight 8ths to me makes it seem more powerful 2. Every time he says "offer me that deathless death" he does this kind of "ack" sound on "offer" and it just makes my brain go WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Flawless performance with HEART and SOUL. He did not "rush" the lyrics, in fact perhaps decreased tempo ever so slightly in order to emphasize the lyrics. I hardly ever say this: This live performance is better than the recording. Awesome and Thank You. :)

lyrics: My lover's got humor She's the giggle at a funeral Knows everybody's disapproval I should've worshiped her sooner If the Heavens ever did speak She's the last true mouthpiece Every Sunday's getting more bleak A fresh poison each week "We were born sick", you heard them say it My church offers no absolutes She tells me, "Worship in the bedroom" The only Heaven I'll be sent to Is when I'm alone with you I was born sick, but I love it Command me to be well A-, Amen, Amen, Amen Take me to church I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife Offer me that deathless death Good God, let me give you my life Take me to church I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife Offer me that deathless death Good God, let me give you my life If I'm a pagan of the good times My lover's the sunlight To keep the Goddess on my side She demands a sacrifice Drain the whole sea Get something shiny Something meaty for the main course That's a fine looking high horse What you got in the stable? We've a lot of starving faithful That looks tasty That looks plenty This is hungry work Take me to church I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies I'll tell you my sins so you can sharpen your knife Offer me my deathless death Good God, let me give you my life Take me to church I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies I'll tell you my sins so you can sharpen your knife Offer me my deathless death Good God, let me give you my life No masters or kings when the ritual begins There is no sweeter innocence than our gentle sin In the madness and soil of that sad earthly scene Only then I am human Only then I am clean Oh, oh, Amen, Amen, Amen Take me to church I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife Offer me that deathless death Good God, let me give you my life Take me to church I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife Offer me that deathless death Good God, let me give you my life

I don't understand with you people. If his music style is not based on your taste of music, why watch? Curious? Besides, i admire Hozier very much. His songs, his style of music and his voice fits perfectly on him. It doesn't mean that i am a fan of Hozier. I myself, don't even liked his covers like on Do I Wanna Know and Problem, but hey, it's his style and it's a COVER. Covers don't mean it has to be the same thing. Get your senses, human. If it's not what you'd like, leave it.
