Hozier wrote this song to shine a light in how something can seem religious and “good” but is ultimately flawed and bad. He uses religion as a way to worship love and having a love. He is actually pretty against the religion that uses this way of thinking.

For sure. And how love being is a sin makes no sense when hate is a sin. He is not anti gay or anything like that. The video is more showing the irony of the “sin” (obviously not) of love versus the sin of hate, seemingly more acceptable. Deep video. So horrific

This was absolutely in regards to the homophobic violence ongoing in Russia. Hozier spoke about making the video in regards to this in particular during multiple interviews. Props.

Range? I think an octave and a fifth. Every time I see this video is like the first time. It brings back so many memories. So many murders. So many arsons. I myself received death threats on my home phone and in my home mailbox. It opens old wounds and takes me a little while to recover every time I watch it, so I don't watch it very often even though it is brilliant. Something sudden and usually shocking happens to punctuate "CHURCH" each time the refrain starts: and at "No masters or kings" at the beginning of the bridge, the dragging starts. It gets me every time. Thank you for sharing your reaction.

i'd suggest having the lyrics handy next time you listen to hozier. there's an awful lot going on in there that's easy to miss. he's especially fond of biblical/religious references (usually to highlight something profane and/or hypocritical) and classical literature references. for a song showcasing his range, i'd suggest "shrike." there's some beautiful high notes in there.

May I request Nina Cried Power by Hozier ft. Mavis Staples? There are so so many good songs by him that are fun to dissect the meaning but since Nina Cried Power is a civil rights song I think it's very relevant right now.

This song was huge, he and Annie Lenox of eurythmics sang it at the Grammys in 2018. And yes y'all are correct, it is set in Russia and calling out the anti-LGBT people there. Hozier is extremely pro-LGBT.

I mean the song was big but Hozier himself never got super famous. When I mention him people usually have no idea until I say "the guy who sang Take Me to Church" and then usually they'll go "oh yeahhh." But like most people who only have one big hit, their one big hit is by far not their best song. He has a lot of soul/gospel influence in his music, but the messages are always very pro-LGBT, pro-BLM, etc. He has way better stuff than this though.

It's terrible in Russia. No human rights for sexual/gender minorities. Listen to the NYC pop-up subway version too.
