Lyrics:
Picture a man,
Seen like a spec out from the shore,
Swimming out beyond the breakers like he’s done his life before,
He feels the coming of a squall will drag him out a greater length
But knows his strength and tries to gather it,
And he swims on
Turning back to shore again,
Above the outer atmosphere of a world he’s never seen,
And looking down to his new home he feels the rising of a wave,
And knows at once he will not weather it
Like that man
I looked down into the depths when I met you
I couldn’t measure it.
Anytime I've struggled on
Against the course
out on my own;
Everytime I'd burn
Through the world I'd see
That the world, it burns through me.
But when I, I'd let go,
My struggling form,
My willing soul
Everytime would flow
Through the world I'd see
That the world, it flows through me.
Picture a grave,
Picture six feet freshly dug,
The sharp temporary walls at the long-term cliff edge of the world,
Light and air find some new deepness there and usher down the sky where one stands by,
And tries make sense of it.
But try measure loss,
Measure the silence of a house,
The unheard footsteps at the doorway,
The unemployment of the mouth,
The waking up having forgotten,
And remembering again the full extent of what forever is.
With each grave,
I think of loss and I can only think of you
And I couldn’t measure it.
Anytime I've struggled on
Against the course
out on my own;
Everytime I'd burn
Through the world I'd see
That the world, it burns through me.
But when I, I'd let go,
My struggling form,
My willing soul
Everytime would flow
Through the world I'd see
That the world, it flows through me.

How does Hozier write things like "But try measure loss, measure the silence of a house, the unheard footsteps at the doorway, the unemployment of the mouth, the waking up having forgotten and remembering again the full extent of what forever is" and just expect me to go on like nothing happened afterwards

Man, I really love what the song is speaking of. From what I understand, the song is about your power to change the world is based on your ability to surrender to what you can't control, because the more you try, the more you "burn" the world around you. It's about resistance and trying to "measure" things most people think they understand (love in the first verse and grief in the second), but once truly faced with it, one can either go mad trying to make sense of it, or let it be, let it "flow" and let it change you. But as you let these feelings change you, you understand that you are part of the world you want to change and through your own evolution, you have changed the world. It is not you versus the world, but who you are and who you become 𝘪𝘴 the world you bring forth. Underneath the pretty words, there's so much humanity under them. Hozier gets it. He really does.

Youre picking up r&b because this song is directly inspired by Black Gospel Spirituals. And lots of famous r&b artists used this same cadence in their songs like Ray Charles, Chaka Khan, Aretha Franklin and the Staples Singers (including Mavis lol), so it actually goes super deep. If you've ever seen the movie Ray, Ray Charles was actually heavily criticized for doing the same thing. Sentiments have changed since then, of course 😅

@@CelestialAgony829 going off of this, the instruments used are the exact same instruments you will hear in black gospel music. (Organ, tambourine, drums, electric bass and electric guitar) Blues, of which r&b derives its name, and black gospel are often referred to as two sides of the same coin, and often share a fair amount of overlap. I'd say thematically this song is more blues. Both of these styles are derived from black spirituals. It's very cool to think about the pieces of stylistic choice that have stayed in popular music over the years to the point where we can still point them out! Especially considering the history that doctor canon points out about criticism, (being called the devil's music) and oppression that has been trying to get rid of it for centuries.

I cry listening to this because I can relate to it in so many ways! Grief is so strong, the gravity pulling you down and the helplessness. But then Yes you have to let go, push yourself up and forward and when you do, you ain't sinking anymore. You learn to flow and float! It ain't easy but Time and Tide stop for none. The way I look at it is Death is peaceful, but being dead when you're still alive, that is the real tragedy!

"The waking up having forgotten and remembering again the full extent of what forever is." For their 25th anniversary, my aunt got her and her husband matching key chains with their wedding date and "25 years down, forever to go" engraved into a token. Just a few weeks before their 27th, she suddenly passed away in her sleep. What was originally a sweet gift is now keeping my uncle alive. He's lost all sense of safety, control, and purpose, but at least he knows that she fully believed that they'd be in eternity forever, and it helps him find comfort in that idea too. It's been about a month and a half. Every day's a little easier. This song and Francesca both make me think of them, I'm not sure if I should share these with him yet or wait a little while but I will eventually

I listened to Hozier’s song, “Blood Upon the Snow” - the style is compatible with this song, and it’s themes meld with “Eat Your Young.” It is like reading a book of poetry, attending an art exhibition, this growing body of work of his that forms a vastly layered picture of existence. It is an artist’s exploration & expression of how he apprehends the world. I’ve always thought that Hozier is brilliant, likely a genius, and he proves this over and over.

He really captures the pain and beauty of the times. And you can feel that as he sings. Every time I listen to his work, it feels like that feeling I get when I'm really in the groove writing fiction. That swell of emotion as you align everything inside of you with what's outside of you, and bring it forth on the page in an emotional rollercoaster that both tells your pain and makes a statement you wish others understood. He brings you along with him the way good writing does. I want to call what he does lyric poetry but that doesn't really describe it. It's just...magical storytelling in sung form. Almost like an incantation or weaving a spell. He brings flow state out of other people, which is quite the trick. Way to go man, you're a gift and so is this album. And to everyone reading this--keep fighting the good fight, ya'll.

This is pure Hozier. I hear it one time and my heart wraps around the poetry and the melody carves out a deeper place. This is involuntary…grateful!

This. I can't explain how much this. Saying I love this would not encoumpass how much I feel for this song. It just has so much emotion and power, and it might just be up there next to Nina Cried Power. I can't explain how amazing this song is. I love you, Hozier. Probably my favorite song of this album.

I was practically dancing along to this song while doing work and wasn't paying attention to the lyrics, at about 2:25 i finally tuned into the lyrics and my heart dropped. my smile faded and was replaced with tears. Ouch. Only Hozier's songs can make you go through this.
