I think he's saying that being alone with his lover is such an addictive feeling that it's the god heroin prays to. And to give a visualization of that, he talks about being with his lover as if he's talking about the effects of a drug. Coz I know he's said that often he gets one idea and bases the rest of the song on it. just wanted to say this because I saw a comment saying you can't feel and understand this song unless you've been through drug abuse :/
@user-yb4ys8ry7h3 ай бұрын
actually I was trying to phrase what I got from this song and all I could muster were feelings like "hunger" "barbaric" "lust" but in a very poetic way. It's a really raw song and I would agree with you that it talks about a love that is not even love, it's need, it's damaged and only present when hidden when they are alone. I don't know if it's accurate but these are my thoughts

Love how there are so many interpretations of this song. I come here to look at what people think about what is this song about. When I listen to it I think about someone who had close themselves for a long time and finally opening up to another person. The skin that crawls from you means they have a hard time accepting touch, or deeper thing: love and affection. Maybe this is about defeating self-loathe and the feeling like you don't deserve love and finally allowing yourself to accept touch and accept love. But I read many interpretations and honestly, they are all very interesting.

@someguy69035 жыл бұрын
Music and poetry are almost the same thing. Only difference is the that music puts actually instrumentals behind the words. I’m both a poet and a song writer. I write them both in the same way. As said before only difference is that when I write a song I think of a beat or something on guitar to go with it. I suck at guitar though but back in topic. I understand it’s a compliment because poetry is looked at to be more delicate and significant when music is something we hear in our day to day lives. When we hear music we only hear it at first but if we find the right song that truly draws our attention and we listen and not just hear then that’s when it goes from music to art. Which is why we can understand that saying it to not to be just music but poetry is and/or can be a compliment. Only when we break it down and look at the differences in between poetry and music is when we realize that the majority of music where they put emotion behind every word is truly poetic art with instruments behind it.

This song could be about either literal heroin and the deadly grip addiction has, and I think this is most likely the case as he was once an addict. It could also be about a woman who is not good for you/him and the desire to have and keep her anyway. Possibly a manipulative woman, one who makes you feel that you're nothing without her and you hold on as tightly as possible because you want to be someone.
@billiey366 жыл бұрын
Are you implying he was addicted to drugs? Where did you hear that? The song is about being addicted to a woman who is addicted to drugs, that's why they both show the same symptoms. What do you think "it's the god that heroin prays to" means? He is hoping his love for her will be stronger than her love of drugs.
@valerirutland24685 жыл бұрын
billiey giles I agree with you about the interpretation of this song, but he has other songs with heavy drug content (see Sedated, Angel of Small Death and the Codeine Scene), so I'm thinking he's either had a little experience with it himself or is very close to someone who has.

Okay but no one thinks this is about how sex has become a drug in our culture? How he finds himself as a sexual object made to be purely sexual but with her, he feels special. "The anthems of rape culture loud.." He hates the rape culture we live in, it's more powerful than heroin. Sex is the god heroin prays to. It feels good to be alone with her.

Yes, it's about the seductive power of Heroin... Comparing it to a beautiful woman, and unless you've tied off and walked (or more likely nodded) in those shoes... You'll simply never know - and be thankful for that. As another song says "Because breaking up is hard to do"!!!
@joycewible88168 жыл бұрын
I feel that you have it backwards. It's about the seductive power of a woman, saying that the feeling of being with her is so intense, even heroine pales in comparison. I don't believe he meant it to be about heroine at all (except for that one metaphor), but people find all types of meanings in songs, and I guess that's one of the beautiful things about music.

+Joyce Wible I wish I could agree with you, I really do - for the power of love and family, the routines of a healthy full and loving life where we control our fate is truly one of the few things that can rescue those caught in the throes of addiction (which is defined as compulsively doing something, anything, regardless of the negative consequences for continuing to do it - feeling virtually powerless to voluntarily stop). But simply looking at the lyrics here: All I've ever done is hide, from our times when your near me"..."when you...kiss my eyes, I feel like a person for a MOMENT of my life"and later when he speaks of how cruel it is to feel the weight of her in arms with skin that crawls away from her... Etc... Clearly her love is the only thing that still makes him feel human,but it's almost a cruel glimpse of something so far away and lost to him in the depths of his addiction and despair. As I said, I'm familiar with the experience. Love rescues; don't shut an addict out.

For me, It's about loving pain killers that make you feel normal... Most users don't like people in general, people suck... So we prefer to be alone, with our pills... Once it hits, you rest, you feel like a person-- normal. The hell it puts you & your family thru when you don't have it, to have someone (family) kiss the skin that crawls from you is referring to the withdrawal symptoms... To feel your weight in arms I'd never use refers to not having to shoot up but feeling the high (weight) it brings, it's the God that heroin prays to bc its the new and improved heroin(maybe it's stronger? Fentanyl?). Feels good to be alone with you. When you're clean you still want to ask for more, even though the worst part of detox is over, just because you still aren't normal and able to feel hole in your own body, without a trace of the drugs in your system (and from the narrators pov) he really hates being sober... thinking that he should just give in and run away with his pills (baby) and maybe even try heroin (momma) bc of the damaged love (the high) it brings. Thinking about relapsing brings him to think about the withdrawals again and the everlasting feeling to get more, do it again, anything to try to ease the w/d symptoms and keep feeling the euphoria...
